editors brown and white :—: — us try it are we ready for the honor sys tem ? undoubtedly not we never will be until it has been put in practice dishonor breeds dis honor without doubt we have cheaters among us and so long as a man cheat he will fear to be honest and will never realize that he is the one who is the worst cheated probably the system would not entirely stop the evil among our selves but the classes succeeding 97 ushered in under the new re gime would have or retain a de gree of honor unknown to those now in college by all means let ! 94 cornell has been presented with a mcewen 100 horse power steam engine for use in driving electrical machinery where exact speeds are essential the engine is guaranteed not to vary one revolution per minute under any load the football management desires that all football men not otherwise engaged in athletics shall play la crosse — cornell sun merchant of venice lecture another large and enthusiastic audience greeted dr coppee on tuesday on the occasion of the third of his shakespearean lectures the doctor began by saying that he regarded the " merchant of venice " as the most perfect of shakespeare's plays he then told of its origin and said that it con sists of two stories in one the story of the bond and the story of the caskets he next went on to de scribe the play more in detail antonio and bassanio were bosom friends of whom the former was a merchant prince in venice and had sunk all his capital in his ships all of which were sailing in different seas so when he was applied to for a loan by bassanio he was ob liged to give his note of bond for three thousand ducats to shylock the jew to be paid in three months at this point the lecturer recited the colloquy between antonio and shyiock with fine effect to the astonishment of all the jew refuses any interest but proposes instead in a merry sport that antonio should sign a bond to the effect that if the money he not forthcom ing he may cut a pound of his flesh wherever he desires as the forfeit bassanio needed this money to fit himself out as an aspirant for the hand of the fair and wise portia with whom he was already in love a sentiment which she returned but her father in his will had left three caskets of gold silver and lead and the person who should select the right one would find in scribed within it the right to his daughter's hand there were many suitors but only three remained to try conclusions — the prince of moskuadrun chose the golden casket and failed ; the prince of arragon the silver one and failed also ; bas sanio splendidly costumed with the money he had borrowed drew that ot lead which when opened dis played the portrait of the lady and gave him her hand the three months passed and antonio's ships had not returned and so he is sub jected to the penalty prescribed by the bond the case is brought be fore the court and there seems no remedy the effort of a fine young doctor of laws who was portia in disguise to make the jew merciful fails entirely the pound of flesh is about to be cut when the dis guised portia declares that though the jew may cut his pound of flesh he must not shed a drop of blood nor take more nor less than a single pound thus shylock is thwarted in his murderous purpose the doctor read the dialogue concerning the rings to the amuse ment of the audience and recited those beautiful lines about the sophomore class meeting the sophomores held a special meeting at 12.30 yesterday in christmas hall to take action in regard to cheating in the calculus and mechanics quizzes kesolu tions were presented but were not entirely satisfactory and it was de cided to appoint a committee which should prepare a plan of action to be presented at the next meeting beach was elected a director of university lawn tennis club starts out this season under more favorable prospects than it has for years past the membership of the club is about thirty and several freshmen have signified their intention of joining the club found it necessary last fall to lay out new courts as the old ones were filled up by the dirt carted from the foundations of the new physical laboratory a site was chosen on the hill above the athletic grounds and the courts were constructed there last fall but very roughly this spring they are be ing fitted out in better shape and will be open for the members of the club in about a week there will probably be no tournament this spring but next spring this custom will be instituted it being found more advisable to hold the tourna ment at this time of the year the financial condition of the club would be favorable if all dues were paid there is still money owing for the work done last fall which should be paid very soon of late years interest in tennis has been flagging at lehigh but from the present outlook an enthusiastic season may be expected this year concert easton the glee and banjo clubs at the final concert of a very suc cessful season was given on tues day evening in easton at the able opera house the clubs left here on the 6.25 p m train on the lehigh valley and arrived in easton about 7 o'clock as very few of the men had had any supper most of the time between this and 8.15 when the concert began was spent in searching out restaurants and bakeries by the time the doors were open however every body was on hand to be greeted by an audience far more pleasing in its appreciation of the music than in its numbers the program was essentially the same as was rendered here some weeks ago and every number was warmly received hallock's specialty and pettinos's solo were as usual the favorites and both were encored repeatedly in the banjo club la czarina and the fin de siecle medly received the honors while the scotchman and lehigh potpourri contended for first place in the glee club one of the most pleasant features of the evening was the presentation to the members of the club of a large bouqnet of roses from our lafayette friends tied with two long streamers of maroon and white after the concert was over the men put in the time about an hour before the train left for home in whatever ways best suited their individual tastes but everybody got together in time and arrived at south bethlehem a few minutes before midnight and though the season was practically closed with the concert in philadelphia this postscript finally ended the musical organizations work for 93-94 notices the collection books for the athletic association have been re ceived and distributed to the col lectors as ordered by the new con stitution these contain the re ceipt blanks to each one of which is attached coupons of admittance to one baseball and one lacrosse game lest some misunderstanding should occur we would say that the money paid recently was an extra assessment for the payment of the standing debt and that the association dues of three dollars for the second term should now be paid upon payment the new re ceipts will be given out pees athletic association cabinet meeting of the l.u c.a saturday april 28 at 9 a m at 505 west fourth street south bethlehem communication junior class meeting the brown and white a meeting of
