the lacrosse season opens here saturday afternoon when lehigh plays the crescent athletic club of brooklyn on account of the shortness of the season and the few home games a large attendance will be necessary at all the games in order to make the season a finan cial success the lacrosse men have labored under the disadvan tage of having no trainer but the words and work of captain ord way as well as of the other old players have shown good results in the play oi the new men and a good game may be expected by all who will turn out to the saturday's game the schedule of games ar ranged thus far is as follows saturday may sth — crescent athletic club at south bethlehem saturday may 12th — cornell at south bethlehem saturday may 19th — johns hopkins at baltimore wednesday may 23rd — cres cent athletic club at brooklyn saturday may 26th — stevens institute at south bethlehem sophomore class meeting the meeting was called to order at the usual time and place by president given a report was given by h baldwin on the work of the committee appointed to make arrangements for the adoption of a practical honor system after some discussion the ame committee with the addition of three more men was continued in office until further investigation could be made wallace reported that arrangements for the class supper to be held fri day evening may 11th had been completed g.womrath chairman of the calculus committee reported that they had definitely decided to abandon the cremation and to sub stitute therefor the promenade con cert which plan he explained to the class in full then the princi pal business of the day the nomi nation of the epitome board was proceeded with the following men were nominated ; pool barth olomew beeler ayers h 8 ayers w s palmer wilson d w da boll wallace taylor e e traf tori dicker man lord thurston j williams,howard,womrath given rodney laramy and bliem the meeting then adjourned sine die there were sixty-seven entries for the spring games of the yale athletic association which were held last wednesday the mask and wig club of the university of pennsylvania intends to give another performance of " king arthur june 6th for the benefit of the athletic association notices lieutenant jaques will deliver a second lecture saturday evening may sth in the physical labora tory at 8 o'clock on the subject " manufacture of heavy ordnance and armor presenting the fabri cation of wire-wound guns com paring the value of this system with the hooped type and showing the ballistic effects of high power • ordnance on the different types of heavy armor the chemical labor atory lamp will be used ; it has re cently been sent to new york and remodeled so that the views of the metal will appear like the natural material all students and friends of the university are invited preliminary contests to decide lehigh's representatives at the state sports will be held on the athletic grounds saturday morn ing at 10 o'clock trials will be made in all the events and every man who is in training is expected to come out and compete committee there will be a meeting of the mustard and cheese at " charlie's r on friday night may 4th at 10 o'clock to elect officers for the com ing year the election of the president of the glee club for next year will be by written ballot the members will write their choice on a slip of paper seal it in an envelope and hand it to w m hall before fri day any member of the club is eligible for the presidency west point will hold athletic games this spring for the first time let prince of denmark had just lost his father and his mother had married his father's brother ham let suspected foul play which sus picion was strengthened by a meet ing he had with his father's ghost who told him that lie had been poisoned by his brother hamlet lived for nothing then but revenge and he perfected his scheme by feigning madness he was in love with ophelia which was also re turned by her and he determined to give her up and the next time he saw her treated her with great rudeness and drove her away he slays pollonius who had been sent to spy on a conversation between himself and his mother and who was the father of laertes his friend and ophelia his love he at last hits upon the strategem of engaging a band of strolling players who were then in the county to perform a play before the royal court in which there is a crime perpetrated similar to that which was done against his father by this means he intends to find out whether the story the ghost told him is true the play has the desired effect and now being convinced of his uncle's guilt he determines to destroy him hamlet's feigned madness become real insanity and the interest of the plot is terribly enhanced by the madness of ophelia who is heart broken on account of the murder of her father and the cruelty of her lover news is finally brought that ophelia has been drowned and then comes the very powerful burial . scene in which laertes and hamlet struggle in the grave of the dead girl then the wicked king deter mines to get hamlet out of the way by a duel between himself and laertes he poisions the end of the sword of laertes but during the fight the weapons are changed and they both have been wounded by the poisonous sword then hamlet although feeling death ap proaching turns upon the guilty pair and makes them drink their own poison so the play ends with a very holocaust of victims the doctor recited with fine effect many passages in illustration of the various parts of the play he es pecially commended to the students the advice of pollonius to laertes as the most striking illustration of duty and honor to be found in any of shakespeare's plays he also said that the famous soliloquy was in every way significant of shakes peare's greatest power in closing he said he considered as an excel lent augury of our civilization the appreciation of so enlightened and cultured an audience and that if in any way his own efforts had met with their approval he presented them with his most grateful thanks michigan has fifty of its grad uates among the faculty hamlet the last of dr coppee's shakes peare lectures was listened to last tuesday by the customary large and enthusiastic audience the lecture itself was of the greatest interest and was delivered in the doctor's usual eloquent style he said in starting that although numerous attempts had been made to prove the story authentic there was very little history in the play the legend also could not be de pended on and the house exhibited at elsinore where hamlet lived and the heap of stones called his grave are creatures of the merest fancy he carefully analyzed the play and showed its marvellous plot which runs as follows : ham the around the fielding of both teams was very ragged princeton's being but little better than lehigh's the feature of lehigh's game was the batting of thompson he making three hits one of which was a three-bagger mcclung caught a good game making several difficult stops of wild pitches fisher played his first game on the team as short stop and although he made several errors and was a little slow at times his game prom ised a good player in the future the princeton team batted well to a man and williams ex-lehigh 96 made a three-bagger their coaching was very poor and their base running was
