after he had fairly begun mr de long's modulation of his voice was the best of the speakers so far heard but his fingers were spread far apart when he gestured and he carried his hand in front of his face part of the time he swung his body as though it were on a pivot evidently however he must have pleased the judges when mr merrill was announced he was greeted by a good lehigh yell though he spoke rather low at first and used but few gestures the eloquent silence of the audience testified to the impression that he was making none of the other orators received that rare applause lafayette followed lehigh's ex ample and welcomed mr chambers with a rousing cheer his ges tures were somewhat exaggerated and too long continued but he was easily heard and held close attention the judges were the hon wm ashman the philadelphia judge hon ed harvey ex-judge of le high county and the rev w w baxter of phillipsburg mr ash man in a humorous speech rendered the decision of the judges in favor of chambers first and delong second philadelphia lehigh club the lehigh club of philadel phia held an informal monthly meeting last thursday ■among the subjects discussed were " the next president also athletics at lehigh and the fund being raised by the alumnae to help them along those present were f p howe 78 john ruddle 83 t m eynon jr 81 alban eav enson 91 c u butler 88 l r zollinger 88 h r fisher 90 geo nauman 90 s e berger 89 m h fehnel 87 e a schnabel 91 and several others sophomore class meet ing at a special meeting of the sophomore class held yesterday at noon womrath chairman of the calculus committee presented the scheme adopted by the commit tee to celebrate the saturday even ing preceding commencement week the celebration to be known as the sophomore promenade and calcu lus cremation the music to be by a good band to consist of two parts with a sufficient intermission for the cremation the whole campus will be illuminated and a lofty funeral pyre built on the old tennis courts during the inter mission the class will march in funeral procession to the pyre upon which will be placed the effigies of olney and courtenay and with appropriate songs and mirth con sign them to the flames after the cremation the programme will be resumed on the campus till a sea sonable hour seats and benches will be distributed on the campus and everything done to make the social part a complete success this plan provides for a crema tion but does away with the old objectionable features its success will to a large extent depend upon the action of the class and the col lege men in general after some discussion the scheme was unani mous a casino is to be erected at princeton which will provide ac commodations for the annual dances glee club concerts and dramatic en tertainments besides having two covered tennis courts the football squad at harvard played two twenty minute halves on thursday the university team winning 18 to 0 the new rules were closely adhered to three new structures will shortly be erected on the univ of perm hospital grounds two hundred and nineteen stu dents will graduate from cornell with the class of 94 oratorical contest " the champion of universal liberty w j morrison swarth more the second annual contest of the pennsylvania inter collegiate ora torical union was held in the academy of music in allentown last evening the music was fur nished by the lehigh banjo club the lehigh delegation was other wise rather small but made itself heard as usual although supposed to have a block of fifty seats re served they were obliged to take what seats they could find when they arrived the program was as follows prayer rev j a bauman ph d muhlenberg " edgar allan poe ira t erd man muhlenberg '* message of the nineteenth century edmund blanchard hav erford " the red cross p a long franklin and marshall pickett's charge william is merrill lehigh " silent influences will grant chambers lafayette j c emley swarthmore presi dent of the union introduced the speakers to the audience garibaldi was the central figure of the oration given by w j mor rison he put much force in his delivery and enunciation but in so doing he deprived himself of the advantage of a final climax he was cheered as he took his seat as were all of the orators of the even ing mr erdman's voice was rather melancholy perhaps in sympathy baseball lehigh 9 university of pennsylvania 17 the usual small crowd of spec tators saw the university of penn sylvania defeat lehigh on the ath letic grounds yesterday by the score of 17 to 9 lehigh played a somewhat im proved fielding game but the old faults of slowness and lack of team work are still noticeable for lehigh the timely batting of cressman and bowie was a feature as was thompson's catch of goeck el's swift line hit in the eighth thomas and reese batted heavily for pennsylvania and blakely made a great catch of a foul in the ninth the game began promptly at 3.30 p m with lehigh at bat and they started off with a rush scoring five runs before the side was re tired bray got his base on balls and petrikin hit to contrell and beat the ball to first thompson's hit was fumbled by avil and with the bases full gadd was given his base on balls forcing in bray with the first run cress man then stepped to the plate and hit a long three-base hit to left clearing the bases and causing some old time lehigh yelling blair caught beggs fly and cressman scored when the ball was thrown in over coogan's head bowie and senior were retired on infield hits in her half pennsylvania came within one of tying the score mak ing four runs on an error a single a base on balls a two base hit and another single lehigh was quickly retired in the second but pennsylvania se cured a lead of three four runs resulting from three singles a base on balls and three errors neither side was able to score in the third but each side tallied one in the fourth ; lehigh on singles by bowie and senior and a passed ball and pennsylvania on goeckel's hit his steal of third and keese's single lehigh added another in the fifth on singles by thompson and petri kin and an error by goeckel pennsylvania scored five runs in her half owing to errors by the lehigh infield combined with a base on balls two singles and two sacrifices lehigh scored two runs in the sixth on beggs single and bowie's home run over the right field fence pennsylvania in her half tallied twice on blair being hit by a pitched ball an error two sacri fices and a single lehigh could not score again but
