places on the wrestling squad that will represent lehigh against the springfield y m c a here on saturday january 31 the try outs have progressed to a point now that all classes with the exception of the 158 pounders are now defi nitely settled the summary of the tryouts that appeared in the brown and white january 23 did not show winners 1 in the 125-pound 135-pound 145-pound and 158 pound classes as all men had not had their chance on the mat at that time but since then some final re sults have been obtained under the direction of coach billy sheri dan n naame upheld expectations in the 125-pound class by throwing griswold in 6 minutes and 10 seconds 1 with a body scissors naame has been using this hold to advantage lately and it is hoped he can bring it into play in the meet johnny bertolet veteran and favorite for the 135-pound class won his class by disposing of locke in 9 minutes andi 30 seconds with a bar chancery the outcome of this j bout wa.-r expected as jßertolet held the advantage of much longer ex perience over locke coxe 145-pound class was the third favorite to come through when he defeated mumford on de cision in 9 minutes turner pulled the surprise of the week by disposing of j bergdoll and he now has to meet f bergdoll in the final as he has eliminated the stronger of the bergdoll brothers turner enters this 158 pound bout the favorite good in the kugler's gold room in philadelphia about ninety members were present in cluding dr emery prof stewart mr okeson and eight members of the combined musical clubs the program consisted of the dinner followed by the speakers and sev eral musical numbers r farn ham 99 acted as toastmaster the first matter taken up follow ing the dinner was the election of officers for the coming year and a report by the secretary moriz bernstein 96 dr emery then spoke a few words concerning the conditions here at lehigh prof stewart spoke next having for his subject ' ' the engineer the spoiler of the world stewart and dis cussed the labor situation of today and told how labor should be and will be at some time properly re cognized the next two speakers of the evening were a h rudd yale 86 and george h downes h k brady and f m porter kappa sigmas reach finals the next game on lehigh s bas ketball schedule is slated for satur day when the brown and white tossers meet the strong army team at west point in one of the im portant contests of the season the last two gamesi with buck nell and the new york aggies re spectively indicate that the team has struck a winning stride al though the opposition in the last game was somewhat weak the score rolled up was impressive and the team work displayed was very good donovan is back in form again as a field goal shot his eleven goals being a feature of the game and he will start at one of the forward positions the other forward position lies between maurer and rote with the chances favoring the selection of rote whose illness prevented him from being started in the game on last saturday hess has been con tinuing his good work at the center position his floor work being excel lent while the records show him to be second in point of scored only three field goals an unusually low total the army basketball team this year presents a strong line-up as usual they have won the greater number of their games so far this season having defeated several strong teams the strength of the west point aggregation appears to lie to a con siderable extent in the guard po sitions and as this part of the le high team is also strong a low scoring game should result while no basis for comparison exists on games played by the two teams this year the game is expected to be closely contested the game will take place in the ! afternoon but was as follows : the freshman handbook or bible as it is called is a fine innova tion in my day we had no such things it gives all the necessary information to the green freshman and also some good advice and i mottos one of the latter is my subject ' once a lehigh man always a g^nitlfiiaa-nj after reading this i over one immediately asks oneself is lehigh different in this respect from other colleges is this motto true or is it simply an ideal i i have come to the latter conclusion ; it is an ideal that the college is striving to attain ' ' this university was founded as the fulfillment of an ideal and a vision it meant for poor boys the chance to get a higher education does 1 it besides this make men honorable andi upright in other words gentlemen not in the old sense of the words as loafers but gentlemen as understood at the present day each successful institution has one or more outstanding features about it the university of vir ginia for example has been noted for its honor system no man after thoroughly understanding the system and getting the spirit of the university would think of cheating before his fellows it is a college tradition ' • there has been a noticeable im provement in the spirit of lehigh in the last ten years better fresh mar classes have been coming each year the honor system is working better today than ever before the arcadia has a higher standard all this i have noticed myself there fore it looks as though the college was coming nearer and nearer to its goal of ' once a lehigh man always a gentleman r o t c movies notice the new york aggies turned out to be the weakest aggregation seen here in basket ball this year and with very little effort the brown and white five swamped the visitors in taylor gym last saturday by a score of 51 to 9 a fair sized crowd was on hand to see the game which was devoid of thrills except for the spectacular goal shooting of tim donovan who caged eleven field goals before coach murphy ran in his second team the aggie team was greatly weakened by the loss of two of their varsity owing to sickness but if they had been able to present an entire first string line-up it is doubtful if they would have avoid blurring in sighting when you have begun to shoot you should take the same kind of sight each time and that is one of the main points in rifle practice the ad vantage of the peep sight over the sent to panama where he was for three years engaged in canal construc tion upon the declaration of war in 1917 he went to fort meyer va and shortly thereafter was , sent overseas as a captain in com mand of a company of engineers of the 80th division while in france he was com missioned a major and about six months later a lieutenant-colonel being one of the youngest men in the army bearing that rank kappa sigma reached the finals last tuesday night by defeating pi lambda phi who recently drew a win from theta xi the kappa sigma team was in very good form and although no man starred the whole team rolled at a very good average winning the first two games handily the third game went to pi lambda phi by five points kay carrying off the honors with 178 the highest score in the matches brown was a close second with 176 kappa sigma will now wait for the winner of the upper half of the tournament which has just gotten under way alpha tau omega was a winner over delta phi last friday night in their first matches of the season alpha tau omega got off to a bad start and delta phi carried off the first game by 60 pins they came back strong in the second and third games however winning by fair margins in both contests monroe was apha tau omega's high roll er with 173 and 172 in the last two clashes connell stood out for delta phi with 170 as his high score continued on third page on saturday afternoon our tank artists succeeded in putting on record their second victory by swamping swarthmore it was an exceedingly interesting meet and was witnessed by an enthusiastic crowd of lehigh men the final score read lehigh 37 swarth more 13 the visitors won only one out of a possible six events nevertheless they made a credit able showing particularly in the dashes the first event of the meet was the 200-yard 1 relay the brown and white team broke the record established last week and won in 1 minute 50 seconds the team con sisted of jacobs wood badham and van nort following this came the fancy xcrvtng coxx'toot x'-ij-isb yiaco was again awarded to stewart whose clean-cut dives caused many oohs and ahs to com from the gallery stew has won the diving event in every meet so far this season baker of swarthmore won second place and lewine third ' the next event on the program was the 50-yard race and it was won by van nort in 27 3-5 seconds badham came in a close second and atkinson of swarthmore finished third this was followed by the 220-yard swim jacobs and grundy were the lehigh entries they finished first and second respec tively with rauh swarthmore third
