s day hop " to be m - h added a ttraction meet wanderers saturday lack of sufficient reserve material results in serious handicap in daily scrimmages price five cents varsity working hard for gettysburg game backfield candidates make good showing notice students must report to graduate manager's office in drown hall any time after four o'clock tuesday for ath letic tickets entitling them to the football games college meeting last friday arcada holds first meeting several announcements of general interest to student body were made plans for founder's day de veloped and various com mittees appointed old customs to be revived at the first meeting of the ar cadia on the 25th of september president bayles spoke of the lack of interest shown by the stu dent body in college activities and urgently requested that the arcadia do its best to stir up more college spirit this fact was also mentioned in connection with the founder's day hop the custom in for mer years has been to hold a dance on the evening preceding founder's day called the foun der's day hop and was rivalled in importance only by the sopho more cotillion the alumni are anxious to have the custom re vived and the president suggest ed that the dance might be made informal due to the lack of time the matter was referred to the dance committee in regard to founder's day itself the president an nounced that the arcadia men would serve as referees and also that the seating in the stands would be freshmen and juniors together and sophomores and seniors on the other side of the field this arrangement is sure to promote more class spirit the main features of the com petitions the games the relay the tying up contest and the pants-tearing contest were all briefly discussed koegler of the students aid bureau asked for support for the new plan of saving money for the students and helping the athletes at the same time the plan is to sell tickets for 2.50 which will gve the bearer a sub stantial discount at ten local stores each handling a different line of goods in this way as koegler pointed out both stu dents and athletes would bene fit the tickets are now on sale and every student is strongly urged to co-operate and buy one koegler also made a plea for general admission to football practice for a while at least continued on page 4 column 1 the first college meeting of the year was held at the flagpole on friday morning at 11 o'clock the primary object was to arouse enthusiasm in the foun der's day sports plans are be ing made this year for the re vival of several old founder's day customs which should tend to add to the spirit of the occa sion a l bayles president of the arcadia acted as chairman and briefly explained the purpose of the meeting the first an nouncements regardng foun der's day were made by george koegler of the committee on student activities the two competing classes will parade as a body to the athletic field where the contests will take place the freshmen will assemble near the flagpole at a quarter past one and the sophomores will meet at the physics building at the same time the track events will start oft the afternoon's festivities and will take place on upper field at one thirty following the re lay race will come the football game which promises to be a thrilling event the sopho mores have been awarded a slight edge on the frosh football men as their team will be built around seven men from the var sity squad between the halves the two classes will combat in the tying-up contest the next argument will take the form of a baseball game a fitting climax will be reached when a strictly masculine crowd will observe the pants tearing contest one old custom that is to be revived requires that the sopho mores and the seniors shall watch the proceedings from the north side of the field while the juniors and the freshmen shall remain on the south side the next matter to be brought before the meeting was the ques tion of a founder's day hop as an effort to bring back this for mer annual event it has been continued on page 4 column 7 of the line walker and cannon are being worked evans is also playing the extreme line posi tion and may give the other two a hot battle for that position merrill yeager cheel and ly tell seem at present to be the main contenders for the tackle berths though they are being pushed by schultz and henry the latter a big fellow who tips the scale in the neighborhood of 190 and has been on the scrubs for the past two years cheel though on the squad last year has developed so much that he is a serious contender for that berth and will give merrill and yeager a battle for the position though he was formerly a back field man in the scrimmages the past week jim yeager was shifted from tackle which he has been playing since the sea son started to the guard position and proved to be equally efficient in either assignment bob lewis and bih ; lfs#p man seem to be the outstanding candidates for the guard assign ment and with the latter now equipped with a specialty design ed head brace to protect his jaw which was severely injured in the alfred game last year the right side of the line has been considerably strengthened two other men who are contenders for this position are yeager and harmon all of these four her cules tip the beam well over the two hundred mark and in spite of their weight are active and de pendable all except harmon have had experience in the var sity games of last year and tho he got into but a few games his showing there and in the prac tices showed that he had possi bilities the center position va cated by the graduation of milt roth is being filled temporarily by don dietrich brown who was seen in that position several times last season wilson and thum are the other prominent contestants for the pivot job cheel who has been alternated between the backfield and tackle position has been tried out here the backfield has more mater ial to choose from than the line when the final selection comes to be made the coach is go j ng to have a tough job on his hands honey lewin is on hand for the quarterback job though he will have to contend with char lie prior there has been some talk of the latter leaving the game but his appearances in practice friday would seem to deny this fact honey's toe is accurate as ever and he wui probably be held in reserve by the coach to be used when three points are badly needed burke the agile wingman was given a tryout at this position and will probably be seen there at least a few times before the close of the season the half-back assignment will be a tough proposition with fred stephens chuck hess continued on page 4 column z intensive secret practices have been in force during the past week as coach baldwin has been concentrating h } s efforts towards the development of of fensive plays in preparation for the opening game with the get tysburg eleven here next satur day three weeks of training ended saturday and coach bald win took his men down to eas ton to watch the lafayette-muh lenberg game which gave them a chance to surmise what their fu ture rivals . might have in store better than ever offensive scrimmage against the scrubs has been in vogue for the past week and though it is a bit too early to make selections for the team which will go on the field for the opening fray the squad has as yet not been cut and every man is being given a chance to show what he can do ; shifting the men about to find the position or positions at which they will be most effective is giving the coach a chance to size up his material next week as the freshmen gridders who are being coached by art cusick and bosey reiter round into shape they whi be brought down to the lower field to try out plays against the varsity though no particular difficulty is expect ed to be encountered in the game against the battlefield team nev ertheless coach baldwin will take no chances and in all prob ability next week will be devoted to stiff workouts and scrim mages in both offensive and de fensive tactics orders have been issued that absolutely no one other than players and those closely associated with them will be permitted to view the daily practices this rule will in force throughout the season save for a few times when the college as a body will be permit ted to see the gridhien in action the building up of a strong line with plenty of good reserve material and the development of a triple threat man to replace the gap left by jack storer seems to be the two main problems with which the coach has to con tend as yet the squad has de veloped no individual player and the passing and punting which jack was relied upon to do will have to be split up among the backfield men a big hole has been left by the departure of springsteen roth and mc goldrick which must be stopped up through the lack of any in dividual star jim baldwin must depend upon and build up a consistent and closely co-or dinated machine thoroughly ground in the fundamentals of team work versatility on the line and in the backfield will be sought after by the coach as a precaution against some unfor seen emergency which might arise later in the season on the line burke is the most prominent candidate for the end position and on the opposite side lehigh's soccer team opened its season saturday afternoon when it won a snappy practice game from the clover ath letic club by a score of four to one although the score stood four to one at the finish with lehigh on top the clover a c played a gallant game throughout the visitors proved their mettle by holding lehigh to a one-to-one score in the first half batz playing inside left for lehigh shot the first goal of the game it was the only one by the brown and white during the first half the opponents evened the score soon after wards when cropper playing centre forward netted a pretty goal the remainder of the first half was spent in scrappy ex changes both teams having fre quent opportunities to score but they lacked the needed punch to put the ball into the net the second half was less even ly divided the defensive play of the bethlehem team crumbled before the organized offensive of the brown and white and was effective only for short periods during the half nevins inside right for lehigh added two goals and fernandez centre for ward came through with the last score of the game the whistle ended hostilities with the brown and white the only scorer of the closing half batz fernandez and nevins were the oustanding players of the game their consistently good work accounts for the le high score in large measure the team as a whole showed the result of capable coaching and a mastery of the game which fits it to me?c all on-com ers everything is now in read iness for the opening game of the season which is scheduled to be played next saturday against the wanderers a local team with a top-notch studies and also in all the other collegiate activities of the year this year the dance will be in formal if it meets with suc cess the founder's day hop will once more be looked forward to as a college function in former years the hop ranked second in splendor and pomp to the sopho more cotillion it is really an experiment and its success de pends on the co-operation given it by the students the dance will be given this evening at drown hall ar rangements have been made to have the famous lehigh criter ions furnish the music the mentioning of this orchestra should prove sufficient induce ment for every student to go to the dance freshmen are allow ed out to-night an academic procession starting at ten thirty o'clock from the new alumni memorial building and ending at the chapel will mark the beginning of founder's day activities to morrow chapel will be in vo gue for the entire student body degrees will be conferred and prominent men are slated to speak foremost among them be ing president charles russ richards the annual athletic events be tween the sophomores and freshmen will be held in the aft ernoon starting with the one mile relay between the two classes the class of 27 was de feated last year in this event and as the team will be com posed of practically the same runners this year they are de termined to atone for their pre vious defeat by a victory of no small margin on the other hand the yearlings boast of a quartet which is composed of former high and prep school stars and a race featured by tenseness and fight from start to finish should be the result after the race is run the scene of battle shifts to the low er field where it remains for the rest of the day the football game is the next event on the schedule the battle for class suprema cy on the gridiron will probab ly furnish many thrilling and ex citing moments class rivalry and its second cousin fighting spirit is oozing over as nei ther team has been in competi tive action yet their real abilty remains to be seen although cross-country notice the annual inter-mural cross-country run will be held october 10th there is a good sized squad of men reporting daily to coach kanaly but there is still an opportunity for those who have riot report ed as yet also spring track men who are not out for a fall sport should sign up for the work outs will be of great value in conditioning for spring track the sophs have seven varsity men on their squad it is no in dication that the struggle will be a farce despite the fact that this will be the initial appearance of the frosh squad as a team the frosh already claim a moral victory and are assured of a crushing one as well their claim that they have been prac ticing and playing as a team for several weeks while their oppo nents have not had the oppor tunity to do this is true this will no doubt play a deciding part in the outcome of this in terclass struggle the coaches of the respective squads ware averse when asked to give out the probable lineups and will not do so until immediately before the game both teams are in the best of physical condition at this writing many high school football stars will wear the freshman uniform between the halves of the football game the rope tying contest w j ll take place both classes will put out a team of fif ty huskies on the field armed with two short pieces of rope apiece the men have already been chosen but their names will be withheld until the moment of the fracas the class having the least number of its members tied up at the call of time wins after the football game comes the class struggle for the highest honors on the diamond again little and almost nothing is known about the abilities of either team were this game to come in june there probably would be more skill shown in all departments of america's national sport in the fall at tention is turned to football and all teams excluding the major leaguers have packed away their baseball paraphenalia to await the coming of another year as a result collegiate skill in that sport is at ebb tide the freshmen squad has been coached by pete dv bois varsity baseball luminary they will undoubtedly display plenty of fielding prowess and enough strength to come through with a good game should their pitchers fail the lineup of either team will not be known until the um pire calls play ball at the conclusion of the ball game all the ladies present in the stadium will be asked to leave the premises for the battle of battles will then take place this scrap which j s known in lehigh parlance as the pants tearng contest may prove the deciding issue of the day regardless of the fact that should either class have the day cinched already there will be just as much fight and fun manifested as if the con test team the frosh already claim a moral victory and are assured of a crushing one as well their claim that they have been prac ticing and playing as a team for several weeks while their oppo nents have not had the oppor tunity to do this is true this will no doubt play a deciding part in the outcome of this in terclass struggle the coaches of the respective squads ware averse when asked to give out the probable lineups and will not do so until immediately before the game both teams are in the best of physical condition at this writing many high school football stars will wear the freshman uniform between the halves of the football game the rope tying contest w j ll take place both classes will put out a team of fif ty huskies on the field armed with two short pieces of rope apiece the men have already been chosen but their names will be withheld until the moment of the fracas the class having the least number of its members tied up at the call of time wins after the football game comes the class struggle for the highest honors on the diamond again little and almost nothing is known about the abilities of either team were this game to come in june there probably would be more skill shown in all departments of america's national sport in the fall at tention is turned to football and all teams excluding the major leaguers have packed away their baseball paraphenalia to await the coming of another year as a result collegiate skill in that sport is at ebb tide the freshmen squad has been coached by pete dv bois varsity baseball luminary they will undoubtedly display plenty of fielding prowess and enough strength to come through with a good game should their pitchers fail the lineup of either team will not be known until the um pire calls play ball at the conclusion of contest may prove the deciding issue of the day regardless of the fact that should either class have the day cinched already there will be just as much fight and fun manifested as if the con test
