has his way lt gen lewis b hershey said friday that because of the deterio rating world situation at least one million trained men are needed in a u.s ready reserve force he said one million draftees are waiting for their examinations but our losses between the time we count sort and send these men to the services and the time they are accepted are very great our kids are living in an age that's soft hershey added be cause we have neglected youth while chasing the almighty dol lar he said almost half of the draftees do not make military ser vice bacuse of physical and mental reasons graduation exercize neville to be honored there weren't too many run aways said harvey l york 67 chairman of arcadia's election committee as he announced the results of last week's class elec tions the 1,094 ballots cast slightly more than half the number eli gible were a decrease of 262 from last year's 1,356 a breakdown of voting by classes is as follows 169 juniors 391 sophomores and 534 freshmen voted this year the class of 1966 elected step hen f goldmann president wil liam j rizzo jr vice-president teaching awards top flagpole day william t mcallister secretary and michael garlick treasurer elected as officers of the class of 1967 were d brooks zug presi dent stephen m wilcox vice president jerry sturman secre tary and d'arcy w roper 111 treasurer the class of 1968 elected robert w slavin president aubrey w gladstone vice president william t powers secretary and w john irwin 11 treasurer the hare system of voting was used in the class elections under the hare system the number of four prominent americans will receive honorary degrees at the university's 97th commencement exercises on june 14 university president w deming lewis will confer honorary de grees on john d harper john j mccloy dr alfred c redfield and dr harvey a neville dr neville will deliver the commencement address during the ceremonies in grace hall bishop fred p gorson president of the methodist world council will deliver the baccalaureate sermon at services on juae 13 also in grace hall harper a prominent industrialist and engineer will receive the doctor of engineering degree the doctor of laws degree will be con ferred upon mccloy a leading statesman lawyer and banker redfield who has earned recognition for his studies of hemoglobin and for his work on the chemistry of the sea and dr neville educator and scientist who has served lehigh for 38 years will both receive the honorary doctor of science degree dr neville was named president emeritus of lehigh on october 11 1964 stepping down from the presidency after four years of service he is recognized as an authority in the field of catalysis and colloid see 4 leaders page 4 ballots cast in the election is divided by the number of seats or positions in the election the drop quota is then determined by adding one to this figure this is the number of votes re quired for a candidate to be elect ed if on the first counting of re sults no candidate has reached this quota the candidate polling the least number of votes is drop ped the second choices indicated on the dropped candidate's ballots are applied to the remaining candi dates the process is then re peated until one candidate polls enough votes to meet the quota the vice-presidential position is determined by retabulating the votes for president excluding the president-elect harvey york said that relative preference was used most in the freshman class where the treasur er was undecided up to the ninth preference wells keddie former instructor in economics returned to lehigh yesterday to accept the student award for outstanding teaching in the college of business administration during the annual flagpole day ceremonies the awards presented to keddie prof arthur gardner of the college of arts and science and prof sutton monro of the college of engineering highlighted the many presented keddie left the uni versity at the beginning of the semester and is presently teaching at perm state both the university band and glee club participated in the pro gram of which prof john steckbeck was master of ceremonies after chaplain fuessle's invocation william b leckonby spoke briefly on the highlights of the fall winter and spring athletic seasons fay c bartlelt assistant professor emeritus of physical education then discussed the history and significance of flagpole day ceremony dr w deming lewis university president figured in at least two awards being honored as the yearbook dedicatee and representing the university in accepting the senior class gift a 135,000 mutual fund john d harper jr in his capacity as president of the senior class presented the gift to dr lewis later harper presented the traditional senior cane to steven goldmann re-elected 1 president of the class of 66 two of the highest award's for students went to v rodger digilio the arcadia service award and the bosey reiter leadership cup both went to the rhodes scholar-elect peter t meszoly 65 received the university service award for his service to the university and student body assistant dean of student life william l quay and phillip leicht 65 were presented with the alpha phi omega service awards eric yonker 65 was awarded the eastern collegiate athletic con ference trophy and the ernesta drinker cup and medal for his efforts in lacrosse and dr sutton monro morning call photo death came to a senior early sunday morning when the car in which he was a passenger collided with a tree a lehigh student was killed and another injured in an early morning auto accident near bath on sunday john u cupolo jr a member of sigma chi fraternity was pro nounced dead on arrival at st luke's hospital by dr fred thompson dr theodore burger a lehigh county deputy coroner ordered an autopsy to be performed on monday to determine the cause ct death injured in the accident was richard t brucher 67 also of sigma chi the 20-year-old stu dent was treated at st luke's hospital for cuts of the right knee and possible chest injuries brucher the driver of the car is free on 1,500 bail on a charge of involuntary manslaughter he will face a hearing before moore township justice of the peace paul w schisler at 2 p.m satur day according to moore township police chief harvey miller the accident occurred at 5:30 a.m sunday on route 512 about a mile and a half north of bath he said the car veered to the right and struck a tree the initial impact came at the right front of the car and tore the right side of the car open miller said the 21-year-old cupolo who was asleep at the time remained in the wreckage miller said he was told the two youths were returning to bethle hem after visiting near west point n y it was indicated the two had switched driving chores in stroudsburg the bath fire co ambulance took both students to the hospital cupolo is the second lehigh stu dent to be killed this semester in auto accidents frank g dean 66 died march
