so many candidates and this will be one of baldwin's handicaps this year burke has practically cinched his last year position at end ; on the other side of the line dixie walker and cannon are having intensive training campaign in taylor stadium these days and coach baldwin is now molding his proteges in to an efficient and powerful ma chine despite the loss of five letter men coach baldwin has a bevy of promising material and is devoting most of the time at the present in mastering the rudiments of the game the work of a typical day con sists of calithenics punting passing a light scrimmage and work on the various apparatus that give the effect of actual op position of a flesh and blood team yet eliminating most of the danger from injuries the mechanical devices include tack ling dummies to sales the business manager is very desirous of having the entire nine issues so far the fresh man class has stood the burden of supplying the burr treasury a thing which has been very common in the past few years this year the board and com petitors are out to get subscrip tions from every student since the magazine can only be sup ported by the whole-hearted sup port of upper-classmen as well as frosh as a further induce ment to swell the subscription list an offer has been made that if fifteen subscriptions are ob tained in a bunch in one living group the price per person will subscription original contributions are be ing looked for this year and any man who feels capable of supplying drawings or literary material should not hesitate to submit their attempts the board is very well situated with regard to both are and literary articles but any good contribu tions will be welcome brown and white competition keen many new candidates have reported to work for the bi-weekly room for more men the football team of the class of 28 got its first real ac tion tuesday afternoon by scrimmaging with the varsity after a short preliminary drill the yearlings invadedthe low er field to put into practice the teachings of coach cusick al though the older men had the better of things the frosh gave a very good account of them selves the scrimmage brought to light a bad defect on the part of the younger men which must be immediately remedied it showed that they have a decid ed lack of tackling ability this may be explained by the fact that they have had little or no practice with the tackling dum my the varsity men have been using it each afternoon but the frosh will soon have their chance practically every one the scrimmage but no good tack lers were found bosey is still out assisting art cusick and together they are putting their charges through drills in the fundamen tals of the game they are also teaching'ithem some good plays which should prove to be excel lent ground-gainers cusick has made great strides with his team considering the handicaps under which he is la boring half of his squad are obliged to attend hygiene lec tures on mondays and thurs days while the other half must do likewise on tuesdays and fridays also every wednes day his whole squad has to be present at drill under this ar rangement it is impossible for him to get all his men together until after five o'clock notwith standing these difficulties he has gone ahead and is now devel oping a remarkably good team hill and dale men pound turf the welcome of the president on opening day on last monday there was a meeting of the lehigh univer sity lacrosse team in the trophy room with about thirty of last years squad present charles laddie was present and it was announced that he would act in the capacity of a coach during the fall practice of lacrosse the fall practice will start at once and will continue till the snow prevents the squad from pursu ing their scrimmages captain groner is practically anxious a turn at the stick this fall so that they will be that much fur ther advanced when the season opens next spring freshmen are particularly re quested to come out for the fall practice as there are plans being made so that a freshman lacrosse team will go into action next spring to make this possible a sufficient number of men must come out and show the coach that they are willing to work and learn the game as lacrosse is a new game to most all fresh men all those who come out have an equal chance of making the squad as yet there has not been any freshmen schedule ar ranged the manager is wait ing to see just how many of the new men come out and how far advanced they get in the game this fall fall practice in la crosse is very beneficial and ne cessary to a polished player and is the only time when a begin ner can learn the game under the guidance of a coach come out freshmen and put a frosh lacrosse team into the field next spring coach sophomores in the founder's day five-event meet this watchword was enthusias ically hailed by the first-year men when they met wednesday in packer hall to complete their plans for the occasion a final class meeting will be held friday noon in the chapel following the daily devotional period all arrangements will be outlined in full during this meeting captains for the va rious teams will be named and they will issue instructions to their teammates every fresh man is expected to attend this meeting the candidates for the base ball and track teams had their first work-out thursday after noon pete deßois yarsity baseball star coaches the frosh squad which includes a num ber of men who give promise of fine work coach m e kanaly took the track men under his guidance in this group is a number of high school and prep school runners who should give the sophomores a race for the event fifty huskies will be selected friday for the pants tearing contest and another fifty will be enlisted for the rope tieing event gardner simes is chair man of the committee directing this part of the arrangements he will name the men to parti cipate the promise of class numer als is serving as an inducement to many of the freshmen but the desire to beat the sopho mores is a far more compelling incentive mr avery tempor ary class president said that victory on founder's day would mean squaring accounts with the sophomores while mr smith vice-president and direc tor of the track and baseball squads told the class that suc cess means wearing honest-to goodness caps on sunday this brought a prolonged cheer from the freshmen mr a l bayles president of the arcadia has been aiding in the organization and manage ment of the new class he has expressed keen satisfaction with the spirit which is being shown by the frehsmen in their prepa ration for the founder's day program it promises to be good he said coach mccracken is drilling his lafayette football men for one of the hardest seasons they have ever had their prospects are rather questionable for this pear although captain barry is supported by six veterans bud ford chicknoski millman geb hardt and kirkleski they ex pect to beat some of the best eas tern teams this year the first game on september 27 will be against muhlenberg the small up river college this team usually opens its season on the lafayette gridiron the first real test of strength will be against pitt the following satur day at pittsburgh after that comes another small college game with hobart on october 11 bucknell follows this a week later playing the maroon team at lewisburgh then comes the first of their four big teams w .& j this_is__qlayial on october 25 and promises to be one of the best games on the subsequent saturday comes the perm game this too will tax coach mccracken's hard work ing warriors to their utmost la fayette's clash with rutgers wilr fall on november 8 and prom ises to be a battle royal from be ginning to end last season the two teams fought to a 6-6 tie and both elevens are beginning this year with new mentors at the football helm on novem ber 15 the easton aggregation matches punts with alfred uni versity a small school near hor nell new york this is no more or less than a practice game pre liminary to the lehigh-lafayette classic the following saturday lafayette closes with lehigh and the importance of this struggle goes without saying whether or not the game is to be played at bethlehem or eas ton is still a matter of conjec ture if lafayette completes the changes in seating arrange ments at march field brown and white staff was answered with great enthusiasm by the freshmen the meeting was held in the editorial rooms of the brown and white in drown hall on friday septem ber 19 the rules regarding the competition were explained by a member of the staff the competition is to last for several weeks during which time each competitor will be as signed several topics to write up due at a certain day and at a certain time each article will receive the editor's grade mark ed according to its merit in technique and subject matter at the end of the competition the nine competitors having the greatest number of points will be elected on the staff no favors will be shown to any candidate each competitor will be known by number ano not by his name this will give everybody an equal chance in the competition the best articles handed in by the competitors will be printed in the following issues of the brown and white those who have not yet signed up for the college paper miss a chance of seeing the reports of this inter esting contest lehigh is looking forward to big things this year from its cross-country team with some real conscientious work there is no reason why lehigh should not only have a good team but a record breaking one also to date there are thirty men in training under the direction of coach m e kanaly this squad includes eight seniors six juniors nine sophomores and seven freshmen the coach is pleased with their early show ing as yet no teams have been picked thus giving all candidates a chance to get into their best form all in all lehigh will have a team of which she can be proud notice all competitors for the editorial board of the brown and white will meet in the brown and white room drown hall tuesday september 30 1 924 5 o'clock p m important meeting the first meeting of the le high mining and metallurgical society will be held the second week in october the main pur pose of the meeting will be to get the society organized and get under way for a big start this year it is hoped that either thomas payne or f f sharp less will be secured to address the meeting thomas payne is a graduate mining engineer arid geologist he has made an ex tensive study in mexico and is a very interesting talker f f sharpless is the secretary of the american institute of mining engineers he also has done work in mexico both men have done extensive work in the field of mining and are very interest ing talkers after the meeting cider and doughnuts will be 3erved at least once in four years under the stimulus of vigorous propoganda most of us in the united states take our politics ser iously it is doubtful however whether many of us are fully alive to the real and vital problems of government or that we have any settled logical convictions regarding them our opin ions of such problems where we have any at all are in most cases based upon traditional or hereditary conceptions of them or are the result of mis-information or prejudice it has been my observation that the right of the individual to participate in government or equality of opportunities to gov ern—that is liberty is one that man values most when he does not posses it and least when it has been
