promising material and is devoting most of the time at the present in mastering the rudiments of the game the work of a typical day con sists of calithenics punting passing a light scrimmage and work on the various apparatus that give the effect of actual op position of a flesh and blood team yet eliminating most of the danger from injuries the mechanical devices include tack ling dummies the harness and a large juggernaut effect on small wheels and very heavy that the linesmen shove in order to develop leg strength and line charging ability of cours thereareotherdevices of minor as frosh as a further induce ment to swell the subscription list an offer has been made that if fifteen subscriptions are ob tained in a bunch in one living group the price per person will subscription original contributions are be ing looked for this year and any man who feels capable of supplying drawings or literary material should not hesitate to submit their attempts the board is very well situated with regard to both are and literary articles but any good contribu tions will be welcome brown and white competition keen many new candidates have reported to work for the bi-weekly room for more men the football team of the class of 28 got its first real ac tion tuesday afternoon by scrimmaging with the varsity after a short preliminary drill the yearlings invadedthe low er field to put into practice the teachings of coach cusick al though the older men had the better of things the frosh gave a very good account of them selves the scrimmage brought to light a bad defect on the part of the younger men which must be immediately remedied it showed that they have a decid ed lack of tackling ability this may be explained by the fact that they have had little or no practice with the tackling dum my the varsity men have been using it each afternoon but the frosh will soon have their chance practically every one the scrimmage but no good tack lers were found bosey is still out assisting art cusick and together they are putting their charges through drills in the fundamen tals of the game they are also teaching'ithem some good plays which should prove to be on opening day on last monday there was a meeting of the lehigh univer sity lacrosse team in the trophy room with about thirty of last years squad present charles laddie was present and it was announced that he would act in the capacity of a coach during the fall practice of lacrosse the fall practice will start at once and will continue till the snow prevents the squad from pursu ing their scrimmages captain groner is practically anxious a turn at the stick this fall so that they will be that much fur ther advanced when the season opens next spring freshmen are particularly re quested is being shown by the frehsmen in their prepa ration for the founder's day program it promises to be good he said coach mccracken is drilling his lafayette football men for one of the hardest seasons they have ever had their prospects are rather questionable for this pear although captain barry is supported by six veterans bud ford chicknoski millman geb hardt and kirkleski they ex pect to beat some of the best eas tern teams this year the first game on september 27 will be against muhlenberg the small up river college this team usually opens its season on the lafayette gridiron the first real test of strength will be against pitt the following satur day at pittsburgh after that comes another small college game with hobart on october 11 bucknell follows this a week later playing the maroon team at lewisburgh then comes the first of their four big teams w .& j this_is__qlayial on october 25 and promises to be one of the best games on the subsequent saturday comes the perm game the competition were explained by a member of the staff the competition is to last for several weeks during which time each competitor will be as signed several topics to write up due at a certain day and at a certain time each article will receive the editor's grade mark ed according to its merit in technique and subject matter at the end of the competition the nine competitors having the greatest number of points will be elected on the staff no favors will be shown to any candidate each competitor will be known by number ano not by his name this will give everybody an equal chance in the competition the best articles handed in by the competitors will be printed in the following issues of the brown and white those who have not yet signed up for the college paper miss a chance of seeing the reports of this inter esting contest lehigh is looking forward to big things this year from its cross-country team with some real conscientious work there is no reason why lehigh should not only meeting of the le high mining and metallurgical society will be held the second week in october the main pur pose of the meeting will be to get the society organized and get under way for a big start this year it is hoped that either thomas payne or f f sharp less will be secured to address the meeting thomas payne is a graduate mining engineer arid geologist he has made an ex tensive study in mexico and is a very interesting talker f f sharpless is the secretary of the american institute of mining engineers he also has done work in mexico both men have done extensive work in the field of mining and are very interest ing talkers after the meeting cider and doughnuts will be 3erved at least once in four years under the stimulus of vigorous propoganda most of us in the united states take our politics ser iously it is doubtful however whether many of us are fully alive to the real and vital problems of government or that we have any settled logical convictions regarding them our opin ions of such problems where we have any at all are in most cases based upon traditional or hereditary conceptions of them or are the result of mis-information or prejudice it has been my observation that the right of the individual to participate in government or equality of opportunities to gov ern—that is liberty is one that man values most when he does not posses it and least when it has been
