a revised version of the rhc open section proposal for upper clasa residence halls was approved tuesday by dean campbell the new policy which will be effective in m&m and taylor this year permits open sections every saturday and sunday afternoons from 1 to 6 p.m the policy will b?i'«me effective as each section voles whether or not it wants this arrangement rhc president peter t meszoly 65 said the while stetler wanted action without military aggression stetler last year tried to send medical aid to the viet cong digilio stetler air views viet involvement debated by 808 bachmann rejection of a motion to con demn the recent cross burning on campus and postponement of a referendum on the installation of a honor system here were the chief action taken at wednesday's arcadia meeting a motion which would have condemned the april 10 cross burning ep.sode as an action un befitting a lehigh student and calling for creation cf a committee to investigate the incident was defeated 4-7 with one abstention a substitute motion including only the investigation clause of the original proposal was passed unanimously the approved mo tion creates a committee to be headed by martin d cohen 68 which will work with deans quay and parr to investigate the inci dent to determine whether it was a prank or whether malice was intended in introducing the original mo tion cohen condemned the cross burning as an inane symbol of something we all oppose arcadia president maury b poscover commented that the pic ture of the cross which appeared in the brown and white was strikingly similar to a picture that recently appeared in the new etzel to head ifc see solons page 7 york times only in that instance it was the alabama ku klux klan that was involved the arcadians who voted against the original motion felt that there was not sufficient evi dence that the cross burning was anything more than a fraternity prank they feared attaching greater importance than was war ranted if a special motion con demning the action were to be passed the arcadians decided to post pone holding a referendum on in stalling an honor system here until the arcadia elections in december the council seemed to feel that more time and research should be spent in determining what type of honor code should be voted upon the intervening time will also be used to have speakers and to circulate information to educate both students and faculty in what an honor system means and how it is enforced a motion was made by james e becker 66 stating that arcadia supports a referendum on an honor system and will work to better educate students on the technicalities on such a system the motion was passed without david p etzel jr 66 of beta theta pi was elected president of ifc at the meeting held last monday night other new officers are peter p burns jr 66 of chi phi vice president frank e weise 111 66 of phi delta theta secretary and ronald e de veau 66 of chi psi treasurer in other business the proposed new rushing schedule was tabled for further discussion because of the student life committee's initial report that the new schedule defeated the purpose of a deferred rush the proposed schedule contained four days of contacting in early december so that fraternities could narrow down their contacting lists before the two-week rushing period at the beginning of the spring semester other changes under discussion included no contacting on the day of a dinner date and natural asso ciation between freshmen and fraternity men on the lower cam i:us at any time dean approves open sections elated stetler and this is because a national move ment in the country has been hampered by sects initiated into the society under french colonialism he then spoke on ho chi minn as the catalyst of vietnamese nationalism ho chi minh united many of the separated factions and established viet nam as an ally he said referring to the country's political alliance in world war 11 stetler then stated that there is no real invasion from the north the fact that guerrilla warfare requires popular support to be a success shows that the viet minh movement before 1954 and the viet cong movement now indicates that all vietnamese are on the side of ho chi minh's movement toward unification he said all the viet cong are not communist he con tinued many have as their main goal the political unification of the vietnamese digilio pictured ho chi minh as detrimental to the unification of viet nam minh's continuation of the struggle in 1954 and his invasion of laos in 1955 both broke provisions of the 1954 upon russ stetler a junior from haverford college and founder of the may 2nd committee spoke fr action in viet nam that would not involve military aggression digilio stated that he was looking at viet nam from a point of view of what is best for the united states consequently he began his discussion chronologically with 1954 when the united states first became actively involved in viet nam stetler building his argument on an historical base traced vietnamese history from french colonialism to the 20th century having been granted permission to combine his 12 minute opening remark time and 5 minute rebut tal period into one long presentation he gave a detailed analysis of the historical reasons why viet nam is like it is today the concept of a vietnamese nation is new many people know so many things that just aren't so the rev dr leonard j kramer ex plained in the 32nd conference on religion tuesday and wednesday kramer associate executive di rector of the department of inter national affairs of the national council of churches said he has observed this throughout his travels and in all his experiences in his talk tuesday night dr kramer stressed unity as the underlying concept of christianity he pointed out that because of the rapid advancements in communi cations media men are linked much closer to each other than in the past progress in science and techno logy is the nature of the world today he said dr kramer explained that the purpose of the international af kramer concludes religion conference fairs commission of the national council of churches is one of edu cation and clarification of peoples thirnking about international is sues he attributed much of the mis conception and confusion concern ing international affairs to the complexity of the subject he mentioned two myths which con.fuse the issues of international affairs most peeple falsely believe that international affairs is so complex that only experts sh/mm be in volved in it according to dr kramer this is dangerous because in a democratic society where the policies are up to the people things cannot be left to the ex perts alone the second myth said dr kramer is evident when some one
