in the bethlehem steel research center in a skeletal stage the dorms overlook taylor stadium vote on referendum solons weigh honor code a 17-year-old bethlehem youth and four companions were involved in two town-gown incidents friday evening on the campus eric schoenholz 68 was stopped by the youths as they drove past lamberton hall the student was skateboarding in the vicinity and one of the youths grabbed his jacket and demanded the skateboard schoenholz surrendered the board and fled about an hour later william prytherch 68 was confronted by the youths and struck in the arm by an unidentified object as he walked past the university center shorty thereafter campus police apprehended the driver of the vehicle used by the group and turned him over to bethlehem police the other four eluded the university gendarmes the youth already on probation was booked by the bethlehem juvenile division on charges of petit larceny trespassing drunken driv ing assault assault and battery and disturbing the peace formal charges could not be pressed against the youth because of his juvenile status schoenholz was skateboarding with two friends dave beckwith 68 and russell lynn 68 they saw the youths stop at lamberton hall but assumed they were students entering the music department the incident started when three of the youths got out of the car and moved toward schoenholz after schoenholz surrendered the board the three students then called the campus police from the university center when the police arrived the students told their story and the police then began search ing the campus for the car an hour later prytherch walking back to his dorm was passing the front of the university center when the same car approached him the car crept alongside him and prytherch saw the front window on the passenger's side slowly roll down prytherch said he stepped into the gutter and then felt a sharp blow on his arm which bruised a bone campus police were in the vicinity searching for the car prytherch see attackers page 5 trash fire extinguished see solons page 7 responsibility at a university can only be achieved in an atmosphere where honesty and integrity are the sole means of regulating aca by 808 bachmann students will have a chance to express their desire for a univer sity honor system if a motion to have such a question placed on the spring elections ballot is pass ed by arcadia the motion to be introduced to morrow night by james e becker 66 will need the approval of two thirds of arcadia in order to be placed on the ballot next month becker is chairman of arcadia's students rights committee if the proposal is placed on the ballot and approved by a substan tial majority of the student body arcadia will send a recommenda tion to the faculty suggesting they consider adopting such an honor code the proposal originated in the arcadia student rights commit tee headed by becker according to the committee re port full academic maturity and officials examine attacks beatings the bethlehem police to investigate the report about this time the campus police received a call from the bethlehem police headquarters re questing them to investigate a complaint about garbage odors on delaware avenue according to roy steyer campus policeman when they found that the number given to them on delaware avenue did not exist steyers said they returned to campus upon their return the campus police encounter ed a bethlehem fire department squad truck a converted 1%-ton pickup driving onto the campus martinuzzi said he dispatched the vehicle after he had received a second call which led him to believe that a fire must really have existed the time of the second call was listed officially as 3:33 p.m fred kanter 66 said he called the fire depart ment about 3:30 to report the fire after he and a friend richard steams 66 could not find enough garden hose to reach the 4^'x6'xs trash container see burning page 7 by glenn r moore the contents of a large metal trash container behind taylor hall burned sunday afternoon while the bethlehem fire department failed to respond to the initial call and while the campus police were searching for garbage odors on delaware avenue the fire was the third campus conflagration snice march 16 peter j paternoster 66 told the brown and white that while taking a shower in taylor he smelled something burning at about 2 p.m after dressing and again noticing the odor paternoster said he decided to investigate seeing the container smoking he called the bethlehem fire department about 2:45 p.m he said shortly thereafter paternoster told other stu dents that the fire dispatcher seemed to think he was pulling a prank frank matinuzzi the fire dispatcher later said that he considered the alarm a prank and called see university page 7 ed preston parr dean of student life said that the situation this year is not serious and claimed that the increased patrols and other steps taken by the bethle hem police were instrumental in decreasing the assault rate graduate program to prepare profs by andy garr the aeed for students to press charges if they are involved in any attacks in town was the main topic of discussion at a meeting held thursday the purpose of the meeting which was attended by officials or the city of bethlehem and the university was to examine at tacks on students and to determine means of dealir.g with these at tacks before they get out of hand a similar meeting was held last year when the incidents between students and town residents in creased in frequency according to irvin good beth lehem's director of public safety the quick reporting of all details of an attack is needed by the police to insure enforcement of the laws he cited cases where suspects have been apprehended on'.y a few blocks from the scene of an inci dent he claimed the early report ef the incident was instrumental in making the arrests charles w brennan dean of students echoed good's senti ments and said that the files on the assaults for the past year which he read to open the meet ing would have been more com plete if all cases had been report by lynn havach a graduate degree program designed to prepare teachers and administrators for jobs in future community colleges will begin hers this summer the new program is the first of its kind in the state working closely with the american association of junior colleges and the pennsylvania department of public instruction a committee of faculty members from the university's three colleges and graduate school developed the program dr w ross yates dean of the college of arts and science was the chairman of the committee when it worked on the program a year ago we surveyed sentiment among various members of the faculty and held many discussion sessions where we went through several drafts of the problem which we discussed with various people said yates we also published information on the
