tennis team wins conference honors bob adams pitches his team to victory in third and decisive game between two institutions on taylor field croll to lead lehigh trackmen steelton boy star previous the brown and whit tennis team garnered more honors for lehigh when it was crowned champion of the mid dle atlantic states collegiate athletic conference with a total of 33 points this tournament was held at haverfora college near philadelphia and the le high racquet wielders won in a decisive manner scoring more than twice the number of points scored by new york university the runner up in the competion fritz mercur was crowned sin gles champion of the conference when he easily defeated law all a teammate for the title the tournament was the first annual conference affair and met with huge success four teen of the twenty-nine colleges comprising the conference were high's first run in the opening frame hick yeisley the rural southpaw who turned back lie high in the only game won by lafayette was again the coach coughlin choice but the brown and white stickers pounded his offering with vengeance and there was joy in the lehigh camp when in the seventh in ning yeisley was waved to the showers and spetz a maroon yearling was sent in to finish the game in hurling adams had it over yeisley as completely as a tent and only once before the ninth inning did the visitors advance a base runner as sir as second adams allowed five liits four of which were singles and so wide ly scattered that no two were counted on any one frame scoreless to the ninth charlie crosse game played in steady downpour lafayette places second and brown and white sixth with eleven points victors win championship the annual military review of the reserve officers training corps of lehigh university on taylor field thursday after noon was witnessed by a large gathering of faculty members and others major general charles muir of baltimore was the senior officer present the honor of color com pany for the year was won by co c captain e w gorham co c received a beautiful stand of the national colors from har ry f w johnson post the military departmer-t of lehigh presented medals to the most efficient senior and junior in the unit for the academic year these were awarded cap tain george h hampton and second lieutenant richard da vis medals were awarded by the military society of the scab bard and blade for the most efficient sophomore and fresh man in the unit for the academ ic year to corporal joseph pal continucd on page 2 column 5 john h croll 25 of steel lon pa will captain the lehigh track and field squad for the sea son of 1925 his election as lead er was unanimous and made im mediately after the intercollegi ates the closing event on the brown and white schedule croll is popular among the students and his teammates and his se lection to captain the team next season is well merited he will succeed jose m carol of phila delphia of the four leading point win ners of the team in the season just closed the outlook for next season is most gratifying since but one of this quartet will be lost by graduation he is cap tain carol who during the sea son amassed a total of 56 points won most exclusively in the 100-yard and 220-yards sprints croll the captain-elect and star quarter-miler piled up 36 points for the season won in the 100 220 and 440-yard events third in the list is john gis riel of baltimore md who fell only two points shy of the number counted by croll with a total of 34 practically all of these points were counted in the discus the only event in which gisriel was entered fourth in order is c l smith 120 high and 220 low hurdler with a to tal of 32 points while the victories in dual meets were far less in number than the defeats the outlook continued on page 2 column i friends and classmates of william colemati o'brien 25 were shocked to hear of his death at his home in washing ton d c friday may 23 death came to this popular member of the student body af ter an illness of several weeks and was due to a general ner vous breakdown several of his classmates and fraternity brothers attended the funeral services which took place at the home of his parents 1115 tenth street n w monday may 26 at 2 p m beautiful floral tributes were paid the deceased by his classmates in the elec trical engineering course at lehigh and by his fraternity william coleman o'brien was ijorn in washington on may 5 1903 and after obtaining his preliminary training in the pub lic schools of his native city he prepared for lehigh at cen tral high school washington graduating from there in 1921 that fall he entered lehigh un iversity in pursuit of training in electrical engineering here his kindly smile and amiable disposition won the friendship of everyone with whom he came in contact forced to leave col lege last february he obtained a position with the philadelphia electric company remaining there until ill health caused him to sever connections with the company he had intended to re sume his studies at the univer sity next fall mr o'brien was continued on page 2 column 6 lehigh won the annual base ball series from lafayette on may 24 when the brown and white batsmen pounded out a 10 to 1 victory over the maroon on taylor field it was the sec ond win for the brown and white in the three games play ed lehigh taking the first lafayette the second and then the brown and white coming through in the final for the most decisive victory of the series bob adams the congenial and unassuming leader of the lehigh nine was responsible in contributing the greatest lot to the spoils of the brown and white victory adams worked on the hill a stratgeic selection of coach baldwin and adams never worked harder or pitch ed a more brilliant game the lehigh captain had the oppos ing batsmen at his mercy and backed up with brilliant sup port lafayette not once threat ened to take the laurels for four innings the lafay ette batsmen were turned back without a hit and the effective ness of the lehigh hurler seem ed to completely shatter the mo rale of the maroon invader at least so it seemed for it has been years since lafayette gave such ragged display in a ball game against lehigh the much heralded berry who ordinarily is conceded to rank with the greatest backstops in collegiate ranks looked like a rank bush er when no less than three un excusable misplays were per petrated by him next to him as an offender was kirkleski who contributed materially to le final baseball game with bucknell tomorrow represented in the competition and a larger number would un doubtedly had representation but for the incelment weather conditions which prevailed on the day of the premliminaries n winning the singles champ ionship of the conference mer cur outclassed the big field winning all of his matches in straight sets and in only one set were any of his rivals to garner more than two games in com petion in the final with lawall which was three out of five mercur won the match in straight sets all the trophies offered for the tournament were brought back to bethlehem invidlual cups were awarded to mercur singles championship a cup to lawall for runner-up and last but not least a handsome silver cup several feet high on which will be inscribed the name of the university as the first confer ence championship and which will adorn the trophy room for a year the cup becomes the permanent possession of the college winning the title three years al hoskins vice president of the philadelphia district lawn tennis association refereed the final match and made the cup presentation while the victory of mercur was the outstanding feature of the tournament the playing of paul lawall was equally as brilliant especially his straight set victory over seymour of swarthmore num ebr 1 singles seymour two weeks ago defeated carl fisch er who was looked upon as one of the strongest contenders for dickinson 2 and delaware 2 although lehigh finished in sixth place this was the best showing made by the brown and white trackmen in several years the eleven points garner ed by the brown and white re sulted from two second places by carol and a first place by gisriel the lehigh captain fin ished a close second to the speedy clarke of hopkins in both sprints gisriel the fresh man from mercersburg easily won the discus throw when he tossed the disc 123 feet 2 inches which was a considerable distance ahead of his nearest competitor this was the best mark made by this athlete this season captain-elect croll was unable to compete because of a boil on his leg and it is almost h certainty that this diminui tive flier would have placed in the quarter mile had the infec tion not interfered with his run ning siegmund and spring steen were nosed out of fourth place in the half and quarter mile respectively the only record breaking per formance of the meet was turn ed by robinson of muhlenberg when he ran the quarter in 50 and two-fifths seconds it is likely that several records might have been lowered but for the fact that the meet was run off during a thunder storm and many alumni on june 7 when the brown and white nine will close their season with the strong bucknell team both colleges have had a good sea son and the bucknell men will come to bethlehem to avenge a 5-4 defeat which they suffered last year bucknell has perm state and dickinson to her victory list dickinson was defeated by a 6-3 score lehigh triumphed over dickinson on april 23 but only by a 3-0 score last week lafayette humbled the orange and blue sluggers by a 7 to 1 score but the latter came back on saturday and blanked susquehanna by a 5 to 0 score although the later is not very strong this season al though bucknell defeated state the blue and white turned the tables and conquered the lewis burg collegians in another game the lehigh players are all primed to equalize the excel lent varsity much interest is centered in the lacrosse game which is to be played against the alumni this afternoon the game will be called at 4 p m and will be one of the big events of the week-end athletic program the alumni lineup will include men who have graduated be tween the years 11 and 23 and men who were on lehigh teams which won the country " cham pionship against this aggrega tion of star players the varsity will have to play exceptionally well if they are going to win among those certain of being in the lineup are wilson 21 ; kutzleb 22 and demoyer 23 1 don schultz 22 and his broth er will probably play the posi tions of in home and out home it is hard to get the complete lineup however as many of the alumni who have signified their willingness to play are uncer tain as to their ability to be here for the week-end for the varsity the lineup will be the same as that of the hopkin's game and will include captain abel green mckenzie springsteen mcßride groner mitchell pakenham smith lis ter or robinson they are ex pected to prove to the alumni that lehigh lacrosse is still up i to the old standard on saturday may 24th the lehigh stickmen went down to defeat under the strong offen sive teamwork of the johns hop kins team the baltimore lads took the offensive at the open ing of the game and under the leadership of robinson the flashy second attack man the hopkins team overwhelmed the brown and white defense and scored the first goal owing to the heavy rains the field was in a very poor condition and both teams were unable to play a sci entific game due to the numer ous falls the lehigh stickmen tried several times to check the onward rush of the hopkins team but only once the brown and white was able to break through the strong defense wtih a pretty bit of passing and dodging smith lehigh's first attack was able to get into a po sition to score the score then stood at 3 to 1 in favor of hop kins until just before the close of the first half when robinson received a pass from turnbull and literally dropped the ball in the cage the half ended here with the score standing 4 to 1 for hopkins at the opening of the second half the lehigh stickmen show ed new life and time after time the brown and white clan made desperate attempts to penetrate the johns hopkins defense but every time the hopkins team seemed to shake themselves and stave off the lehigh attack the hopkins team has the highest percentage in the south ern division and consequently will receive the championship for 1924 the lehigh clan how ever gave the hopkins lads a close varsity much interest is centered in the lacrosse game which is to be played against the alumni this afternoon the game will be called at 4 p m and will be one of the big events of the week-end athletic program the alumni lineup will include men who have graduated be tween the years 11 and 23 and men who were on lehigh teams which won the country " cham pionship against this aggrega tion of star players the varsity will have to play exceptionally well if they are going to win among those certain of being in the lineup are wilson 21 ; kutzleb 22 and demoyer 23 1 don schultz 22 and his broth er will probably play the posi tions of in home and out home it is hard to get the complete lineup however as many of the alumni who have signified their willingness to play are uncer tain as to their ability to be here for the week-end for the varsity the lineup will be the same as that of the hopkin's game and will include captain abel green mckenzie springsteen mcßride groner mitchell pakenham smith lis ter or robinson they are ex pected to prove to the alumni that lehigh lacrosse is still up i to the old standard on saturday may 24th the lehigh stickmen went down to defeat under the strong offen sive teamwork of the johns hop kins team the baltimore lads took the offensive at the open ing of the game and under the leadership of robinson the flashy second attack man the hopkins team overwhelmed the brown and white defense and scored the first goal owing to the heavy rains the field was in a very poor condition and both teams were unable to play a sci entific game due to the numer ous falls the lehigh stickmen tried several times to check the onward rush of the hopkins team but only once the brown and white was able to break through the strong defense wtih a pretty bit of passing and dodging smith lehigh's first attack was able to get into a po sition to score the score then stood at 3 to 1 in favor of hop kins until just before the close of the first half when robinson received a pass from turnbull and literally dropped the ball in the cage the half ended here with the score standing 4 to 1 for hopkins at the opening of the second half the lehigh stickmen show ed new life and time after time the brown and white clan made desperate attempts to penetrate the johns hopkins defense but every time the hopkins team seemed to shake themselves and stave off the lehigh attack the hopkins team has the highest percentage in the south ern division and consequently will receive the championship for 1924 the lehigh clan how ever gave the hopkins lads a close
