866-0331 vol 76 — no 31 brown and white matt gillespie band set for annual military ball upperclass residence halls men will no longer have to petition for weekend open sections if a resolu tion passed tuesday at the resi dence halls council meeting gains administration approval proposed by robert s young 66 rhc member and vice pres ident of arcadia the motion would permit residence halls men to have female guests in their rooms any saturday or sunday between 1 and 6 p.m according to the proposal sec tion members and officers would be responsible for maintaining university rules of discipline and lists for signing women guests in and out would not be required the door of a room in which a b&w photo by norman beamer five engineering students from ecuador accompanied by their council to allot 300 to his club so that the lehigh and cedar crest civil rights organizations can co-sponsor talks by a leader of the august 1963 march on washington woman is visiting would be left open young and peter t meszoly 05 will submit the motion and an argument in favor of the proposed policy to dean clarence b camp bell director of residence halls rhc will sponsor a reception for sir dennis brogan noted british political scientist and first speaker in the lehigh blaustein lecture series on march 23 on march 24 the council plans to hold a dinner in brogan's honor at the tuesday meeting council members approved request that the council allocate 100 for the transportation and meals of phi beta kappa visiting scholar ran dall jarrell who will come to le high in april rhc plans to hold a reception for jarrell in the faculty lounge on april 27 a motion that the council as sign laundry linen and vending machine concessions on the basis of recommendations from the office of financial aid was unani chem-met construction is almost on schedule lafayette cedar crest and mora vian noted for its wide variety of dance music the nine-piece band will feature gillespie at the piano considered a feature attraction the band has shared billing in re cent years with such orchestras as those of stan kenton woody her man tex benecke russ morgan and sammy kaye gillespie is the owner of two studios in bethlehem where he teaches piano and organ the queen of the ball will be chosen from entries submitted to the brown and white pictures of candidates should be submitted no later than 5 p.m wednesday all pictures should be two by three inches and should show head and shoulders only the name of the girl and her escort should be printed on the back four semi-finalists will be chos en and their pictures wil appear in the march 5 issue of the b&w the queen will be selected by popular vote at the ball tickets for the ball are on sale in the military and air science offices in grace hall and at the student activities desk in the university center the ball is open to all lehigh students and their dates tickets cost 4 per couple dress will be formal cadets must wear their uniforms with white shirts and black bow tie the music of matt gillespie will be featured at the military ball at 9 p.m saturday march 6 in the ballroom of the hotel bethlehem the highlight of the ball will be the selection of a queen the annual military ball is spon sored by lehigh's army and air foorce roto units and is being planned this year by the air force cadets gillespie's band is widely known throughout the lehigh valley and has been described as playing the lion's share of the area social events gillespie has appeared at many of the area colleges including temple muhlenberg gettysburg despite construction delays resulting from bad weather the new chemical and metallurgical engineering building will be completed on schedule george moore job foreman for irwin & leighton inc of phila delphia said we are a little behind schedule right now but when the weather breaks we'll catch up the building will be done on time in september the new building whether finished on time or not will be a boon to the chemical and metallurgical engineering departments both are cramped in their respective buildings and are in need of additional laboratory space and equipment the chemical engineering area of the building which will comprise about 40 per cent of the total laboratory space will have several innovations among them are a nuclear research lab a standards lab a process dynamics lab and an explosion barrier there will also be more and bet ter equipment for graduate stu dents the metallurgical engineering department will occupy the re maining 60 per cent of the build ing although it is smaller than the chemical engineering depart ment this anomaly was explained by dr leonard wenzel head of the chemical engineering department the met e's do more contract re search and need more space for equipment he said they make samples photograph them then analyze them both for this they need large apparatus and a lot of space dr george conrad professor of metallurgical engineering cited some of the benefits in store for his department we will have a lecture hall which is something new to us there will also be a physical cer amics lab a physical properties lab and a chemical metallurgical lab liquor agents to tell police of operations state liquor control board representation announced wed nesday that agents will not oper ate in warren county n j with out first notifying police officials of their presence the announcement followed the arrest of an lcb agent in phillips burg two weeks ago on charges of loitering and carrying a concealed weapon the agent's arraignment has been postponed indefinitely the statement released by the lcb and the warren county prosecutor did not indicate that the liquor agents border patrol intended to halt the flow of untax ed liquor into pennsylvania would cease operations new jersey officials have been under increasing pressure from liquor store owners to halt the lcb agent activity their busi ness has dropped sharply
