a record total of 421 freshmen and five upperclassmen accepted bids to join lehigh social frater nities last saturday the freshman figure represents an increase of 52 over last year's figure and the overall sum is the largest number of students ever pledged in a single year at lehigh there were also 17 freshmen who accepted contracts extended by the gryphon society last week these freshmen were chosen from about 200 original applicants pi kappa alpha took the largest number of pledges 19 freshmen and four upperclassmen beta theta pi and sigma chi took the largest number of freshmen pledges with a total of 22 each other fraternities with large pledge classes are sigma alpha mv with 22 pledges alpha tau arcadia board starts action the executive board of arcadia xix met sunday night to consider prelimin ary action in the matter of the eco 3 affair it was decided at the meeting to draft a letter to the faculty subject to the approval of the entire arcadia tomorrow night on the subject the board de cided to telephone dr w deming lewis university president on the matter nearly 90 taylor hall students gathered in the university center last thursday to discuss plans for entering the new residence halls next fall taylor hall president tom freund 65 talked on the capacity of the new dorms what the new dorms and m&m would cost per semes ter and related how living groups in the new dorms would be formed he also announced the formation of a committee to oversee the mass relocation of students the committee would be comprised of three men from taylor five men one from each section from mcclin tic-marshall rhc president pete meszoly 65 dean of residence halls clarence campbell assistant dean peter shurtleff and possibly the house presidents of taylor and m&m the committee will decide where living groups would be re located in the three buildings freund said that the new dorms would cost 200 per semester and m&m would cost 180 per semes ter both of these rates are higher than those paid by taylor students now the taylor president also said that out of the 44 men who would live in each new section 35 are to be upperclassmen and 9 are to be next year's sophomores he said that he hoped that these numbers could be varied so that more taylor students seeking to enter the two sections allotted for taylor hall can be accommodated because there will be more residence halls students using the dining services next year freund doubted that town students would be allowed to use the services he said that about 1195 residence hall and 150 town students fraternity and the freshmen be cause it is so short one fraternity man defended the system saying he felt that this year's rushing was more un fair than the system warrants he felt the reason for this was that a few houses extended pre bids very early and caused others to do the same the result was that most fresh men had made up their minds by wednesday and little was done on wednesday and by the reverend father thomas a garrett s.j associate profes scr of ethics at the university of scra'riton the conference spon sored by the interfaith council is to bo held on february 18 and 19 for the principal lecture of his series father garrett will speak on business as enthusiasm feb 18 at 8 p.m in the osbourne room of the university center father garrett's classroom lec ture series will include the follow ing on feb 18 he will address the economics 333 class on the individual and the union indus trial engineering 222 on decision making and philosophy 490 on value theory on feb 19 he will lecture to government 352 on the rights of the individual in labor law and to social relations 1 on ethics by brian kanes preliminary findings indicate that the students who received incompletes in eco 3 last semester will suffer because their final ex amination marks were de-emphasized in determining their final grades for that course an effort by the brown and white to determine the identity of the students and their semester and final grades in eco 3 located 35 of the 41 as of sunday night ten of these 35 students had received their final marks and one declined to reveal his grades all but one of the final grades reported by the students who gave their final marks to the brown and white on sunday indicate that they were awarded a lower grade than they would have received if the final exam had been weighed to the extent expected these students improved their grades only to be denied the im provement other students may have gone down on the final but since its importance was minimized they came out ahead the 35 students are representatives of all three colleges all four un dergraduate classes and 11 living groups including town students one freshman engineer residing in dravo said he was told by his recitation instructor that his average going into the final was b the student said he received an incomplete c a senior engineer from mcclintic-marshall stated that he had a d average on his hourlies an a or b in class work was told by the instructor dr frederic firestone that he got an a on the final and then received a d-incomplete a sophomore business major who lives on the hill was told he had a b average before the final exam he thought he got an a on the final he received a c-incomplete and a final grade of c the only student as of sunday whose reported grade indicated an increase was a junior fraternity man in arts-engineering he said that he received a d on the first hourly a b on the second a c or see course page 6 taylor men meet relocation planned a memorandum from bernard feick jr chairman of the ipc judiciary committee said the committee decided that this case was one of misrepresentation of the fraternity-freshmen relation ship and therefore placed phi gam in a privileged position with rela tion to the other fraternities in the eyes of the freshmen the memorandum added that the ifc rushing and judiciary committees have received many complaints about rushing viola tions but could not act until evi dence was produced
