a professor's curiousity result ed in the awarding of 41 incom pletes in economics 3 last semes ter dr frederick n firestone asso ciate professor of economics said his curiosity stemmed from two separate occurrences during the final exam period several days before the final in economics 3 the safes in the of fice of the college of business administration were found open when the offices were opend in the morning later the results of the final in economics 3 showed that many students had done an extraordi nary job which exceeded their per formance previously in the course firestone said these results made him feel that he couldn't rely on the exam and said that he down getting to know you ... a fraternity man chats with two prospective brothers at one of lehigh's 30 national fra ternities greeks and members of the class of 68 are looking forward to the end of rushing on saturday frosh contacting continues as fraternities narrow lists ministered orally dr w ross yates dean of the college of arts and science said that attempts have been made to break into nearly all the depart ments in the college at one time or another during the past several years he said that there was such an attempt last year at lam berton hall he said he was concerned by the successful breaking and enter ing at lamberton dean of students charles w brennan was also deeply concern ed by the stencil theft i don't know what they hoped to accom plish by this he said the number of students involved in cheating is small though he said yates agreed but stated that though only one person need be involved it reflects on all students the majority opinion of several members of the faculty questioned concerning cheating at lehigh in dicated that few studeats are in volved the faculty members indicated that they had been confronted with very little cheating in their classes at lehigh although some see cheating page 3 graded the influence of the test in the final mark further work in the course will be required of those students who received incom pletes in a letter released monday firestone outlined further work which will be required of the stu dents with incompletes firestone emphasised that no one was being accused but reiter ated that the coincidence of the two occurrences made me curi ous the disclosure that the offices of the department of romance languages in lamberton hall had been broken into and stencils of finals in german portugese and several other language courses stolen gave rise to fears of a cheating scandal at lehigh the lamberton theft was dis covered by a secretary who check ed her files after being notified by a maid that a window in the ladies room was broken the campus police and the heads of the departments involved were notified immediately new exams were hurriedly pre pared in time for the scheduled exam periods and some were ad esterhazy here monday orchestra to play fraternities residence halls and the gryphon society are all busy contacting freshmen this week fraternities having most of their rushing completed have limited their contacting lists to between 60 and 90 freshmen who were in vited to dinner during the past four days arcadia votes support for civil rights the music of bach mozart and gluck will comprise the main pro gram of the esterhazy orchestra monday evening the concert the third in a series sponsored by the lehigh com mittee on performing arts will begin at 8:15 p.m in grace hall id cards will serve in lieu of tickets the esterhazy orchestra dedicated to performing masterpieces of the 18th and early 19th centuries exists in honor of the orchestra con ducted by joseph haydn during his 30 years of service to the aris tocratic esterhazy family of hun gary the concert at lehigh is part of the group's first tour of the united states following three successful seasons in new york city conducted by david blum the orchestra will perform three com positions by bach fa tribute to dr albert schweitzer who celebrated see esterhazy page 7 a few of the fraternities will invite back to dinner tomorrow and thursday only those fresh men to be given bids these fra ternities expect thursday's dinner to be a pledge dirtaer other fraternities have already extended pre-bids but have not limited their lists to a point where al those coming to dinner wednes day and thursday will be given bids still other fraternities will make few pre-bids until the offi cial ones are extended on satur day morning following the dinners on wed nesday and thursday friday will be a day of silence and there will be no contact between freshmen and fraternity men on saturday morning the offi cial bids will be extended fresh men will go to the university center room 403 between 10 a.m and 3 p.m they will receive bid envelopes and examine them they keep the bid of the fraternity they wish to join and sign and re turn the rest while in the room first blaustein speaker named freshmen are not permitted to communicate with other freshmen that night all fraternities will have either a pledge dinner or pledge party the gryphon society extended contracts last week to a number of freshmen who will have until friday to accept or reject their contracts if 22 do not accept bids further contracts will be ex tended the gryphons will hold an open house and recruiting banquet saturday for those who have ac cepted contracts the residence halls will have no official contacting program peter meszoly 65 rhc president said that while the residence halls council is not sponsoring any specific program some of the in dividual sections will be contact ing freshmen during the next couple of weeks some sections will also hold open houses for those freshmen they are interested in other sections will have no con tacting program members of arcadia xix start ed the semester by supporting a civil rights fund-raising drive and announcing the chairman of five permanent committees chuck zall 66 moved that can isters be placed in conspicuous spots on the campus so that the civil r'ghts organization could collect donations and spread pub licity al loranger 65 said that if arcadia allowed the civil rights organization to carry out its plan then arcadia would almost have to allow other groups to collect donations zall countered that such cam paigns might stimulate student interest in the organizations steve mandell 66 said that too many campaigns would clutter the university with canisters he men tioned that arcadia already gives enough to organizations the motion was carried by a 9-3 vote zall york becker glad stone roper young kelly kapell and cohen voted yes mandell adelaar and loranger voted no early wilcox and coulston were absent a representative of arcadia must approve the final plan before the campaign is initiated see arcadia page 4 see brogan page 6 sufficient upright egalitarian farmer of the legend he is almost the opposite sir denis adds that far from being a zealous political democrat he is a bad voter devoting little time and next to no thought to affairs of state brogan's america is a country in which economic and political hope springs eternal in which however he also believes that america is a new world maked off from the old world in important and on the whole hopeful and helpful ways the distinguished british author thinks america is worthy of the most intense critical scholarly study not only by outsiders but more particularly by americans dr carey b joynt professor and head of the university's de partment of international relations discussed the reasons for bringing sir denis william brogan one of britian's most noted political scientists and an authority on america will speak at lehigh on march 22-24 on the dilemma of american policy in a changing world sir denis is the first of a series of lecturers sponsored by the new jacob blaustein lectureships in international relations lehigh plans to use the entire 25,000 grant to sponsor one annual lecture on a world topic for the next five years sir brogan's first major literary work the american political system appeared in 1933 and was followed by a series of books on history and politics which dealt mainly with the united states and france his most recent book american aspects was recently published by harper and row it's theme is has the american national person ality changed through the decades brogan explains that he sees in america the decline in demo cratic feeling the pursuit of status and the increasingly visible class lines and class barriers sir denis
