crossroads africa — herbert c kneller 66 describes his summer in uganda as a mem ber of the crossroads africa program lehigh's 1964 crossroaders presented a panel discussion of the project monday the other panelists left to right are v rodger digilio robert r scholz dean preston parr and e jackson holt two new advanced undergradu ate and graduate courses in the information sciences will be offer ed in the spring semester the courses will be entitled the information sciences i.s 202 and seminar in social psy chology s.r 302 the topic for the seminar in the spring semes ter will be social psychology of scientific communication the information sciences is to be a three credit-hour course introducing the student to the study of the properties behavior and flow of information the topics considered will in clude : the organization of inform ation language analysis environ mental aspects of information instructors and assistant profs get promotions by bill bonnell how much can an american do if he has about 150 and one sum mer in which to visit africa preston parr dean of student life and four lehigh undergraduates spent last summer on the continent of emerging nations as members of the crossroads africa program they found that a summer in africa and a minmum of pocket money can go a long way toward creating a memorable and worthwhile experience during a panel discussion of the crossroads program monday night in the university center dean parr robert r scholz 65 rodger digilio 65 herbert c kneller 66 and e jackson holt 65 related some of their experiences and told how the program works crossroads africa is a private non-profit organizatin which sends college-age americans and canadians to africa each summer the goals of the program are to promote international understanding and to help african nationals develop their countries projects assigned to the crossroads groups are suggested by the host governments kneller who worked in uganda said that getting to meet and understand africans on a daily local level was one of the highlights of his summer he said he also enjoyed the opportunity of working 1 with boys from more than 30 african counterpart clubs calling attention to the fact that participation in the program means traveling to unfamiliar lands 5,000 miles from home digilio said you will never meet a situation where something is certain some of us had to wait a few days for our souls to catch up to our bodies kneller added dean parr who served as a group leader in ghana said that he arrived well-briefed and confident was greeted warmly with open arms where he had expected tension or hostility to prevail and left somewhat confused by the unexpected conviviality and sincerity he found in the people of ghana holt who was in niger told of watching a tall youth besting all challengers in a series of wrestling matches one day holt said he learned some of the fundamental holds during his lehigh years and decided to challenge the bigger but untrained youth after winning his bout holt said he was in great demand every afternoon among the see crossroaders page 5 two new courses offered in spring chance to demonstrate thanksgiving fast set systems and communications and man-system relationships the course will be taught by robert s taylor director of the center for the information sci ences and it is scheduled to meet tuesday thursday and saturday at 10 a.m this course was pre viously offered as phil 294 the seminar in social psycho logy is also a three credit hour course this course will be taught by dr frank baker instructor in social psychology and will meet wednesday from 1-4 p.m topics under consideration will be social-psychological aspects of technical and scientific communi cation generation flow and use of specialized information the effect of creativity personality president of the organization for civil rights a thanksgiving fast for free dom is being sponsored and or ganized by arcadia with the help lehigh students will soon have a chance to demonstrate their concern over inequalities arising from southern segregation move ments said robert a yaffee 65 of the civil rights club the fast sponsored by the united states national student association has been patterned after last year's food for free dom drive which raised 10,250 on 42 campuses the money is used to provide hungry and impoverished missis sippi negro families with food last year's drive provided over 80,000 pounds of food which the teamsters union picked up and delivered free the lehigh version of the fast will be aimed at getting contribu tions from students enrolled in one of the university meal plans said bob marmon 65 head of ar cadia's coordinating committee for this project these students he said may contribute by giving up one of their meals or by giving money a desk will be set up opposite the university post office where members of the meal plan may sign their names and meal card numbers to join the fasters the money saved when the din ing service doesn't prepare meals for the people on the list will be given to arcadia for the program fraternities and other groups will be able to donate money in stead of relinquishing meals mar mon said rags to riches — the department of education opened its new administrative headquarters on tuesday the building located opposite the campus on brodhead avenue underwent extensive renovation before the educators vacated a well-worn wooden structure erected for temporary use many many years ago four faculty members were pro moted recently two were raised from assistant professor to asso ciate professor and two instruc tors received assistant professor ships advanced to associate professor from assistant professor were dr samir a khabbaz mathematics and dr edward c scanlan edu cation promoted to assistant professor from instructor were dr robert a lucas in machine design couse sequences and dr richard roberts in materials research a member of the lehigh faculty since 1960 dr khabbaz was grant ed a leave of absence during the past year to spend at yale uni versity under a post-doctoral asso ciateship from
