saturday night's freshman dink hop attracted more girls than guys — for awhile cedar crest centenary wilson and beaver supplied more than 550 dates for the frosh attending the dance but as matt gillespie's eight piece orchestra played on fresh men were busy escorting girls out the doors of grace hall into the waiting arms of the upperclass men the fraternity men outside quickly led some of the girls away to the livelier hill parties to compensate for the chivalrous ef forts of the frosh the girls in some cases paid them the price of their then worthless ticket 3.00 the lehigh rum runners took the stage as the orchestra took its break the couples that remained sat in the bleachers and on the floor awakened and then captivat ed by the folk songs guitars and occasional jokes during the performance four campus policemen and many gry phons present to quell disturb ances discovered three upper classmen in the audience the officials chased the intruders around the floor crowded with couples and finally out the door to preserve the peace lehigh to host four freshmen 866-0331 lehigh university brown and white bethlehem pa — tuesday october 6 1964 vol 76 — no 6 the four freshmen will appear saturday on the lehigh campus for the rutgers weekend the group will present a concert at 8:30 p.m saturday following the afternoon rutgers football game tickets will be available at the student activities desk a 2 per person a favorie of college audiences the group specializes in jazz folk and popular tunes the members of the group not only sing but play instruments as well bob flanigan the lead singer also plays the trombone and bass bill comstock guitar ross barbour trumpet and drums and ken albers trumpet mellophone and bass the group first formed in 1948 but did not become well-known until stan kenton recognized their potential and convinced capital recording to sign a contract with them they now have an 11 month road schedule which permits them to entertain over 200,000 persons a year they have appeared in holly wood's crescendo the hollywood bowl storyville in boston new york's birdland carnegie hall and at the newport jazz festival during the past 10 years the frosh have won every major music poll including honors from downbeat and billboard this year they won playboy's all-star poll for folk singing and jazz 2 slated to receive honorary degrees the four freshmen winners of the 1964 playboy all-star poll will sing in grace hall sat urday night as part of rutgers weekend festivities tickets are available at the student activities desk at 2 per person first organized in 1948 the freshmen have recorded more than 20 albums and currently entertain over 200,000 persons a year arcadia president meets lbj digilio visits white house gals outnumber guys for time at frosh dance see lbj page 5 namara told the group that al though there was no doubt as to american nuclear superiority it was important that all realize there can be no real winner in nuclear war digilio said the defense chief made it clear that although the federal government felt a respon sibility to aid communties hit by closing of government defense installations or awarding of con tracts the department was not operating a wpa for local corn and a host of photographers giv ing him the impression of an im pending presidential news confer ence at 5 p.m secretary of state dean rusk appeared at the po dium and welcomed the group he emphasized that the rights bill passed this year had proved an important contribution to helping u.s foreign relations secretary of defense robert mcnamara followed rusk he im pressed digilio as a very precise and business-like individual mc he serves on the advisory board of the edison electric institute and is a member of the institute of electric and electronic engi neers he is a member of the greater newark development council and in 1955 he was see 2 page 6 donald c luce president of the public service electric and gas co newark n j and robert c weller president of mitchell college new london conn will receive honorary degrees at the 86th founder's day ceremonies sunday luce a 1924 graduate of lehigh will receive the degree of doctor of engineering weller will re ceive the degree of doctor of laws luce a native of scranton was graduated from lehigh with a d3 gree in electrical engineering and joined public service the same year since 1954 he has been presi dent of public service he has also served as a member of its board of directors and the execu tive committee by bill bonnell a wink from president johnson informal remarks by four of the nation's top men and an excellent buffet dinner highlighted an eve ning at the white house for v rodger digilio arcadia president digilio was one of the 230 col lege and university leaders selected to represent their schools at the white house reception saturday the evening began for digilio as he flashed his credentials at the southwest gate to the white house and entered the home of the nation's leader digilio and the other guests were ushered into the east room its array of television equipment guitar player will perform in grace hall see guitars page 4 classical guitarist john wil liams will perform in the second of the university's committee on performing arts series 8:15 p m oct 17 in grace hall williams now on his first major north american tour has been acclaimed for his artistry in the major cities of europe including paris london madrid moscow and leningrad his american debut in new york's town hall in 1963 was described as a per formance of exceptional brilliance and persuasion born in melbourne australia williams began his studies under the direction of his father who was a well-know jazz guitarist in london prior to world war 11 williams met the international problem — find the guy who regrets the excess of gals at the dink hop saturday there weren't many for frosh are already pestering their gdyphons for another such dance
