of you i will never look at this problem the same way again parr was one of four members of a panel which discussed the topic africa — maturing or disin tegrating other panelists were martin kramer u.s state depart ment john strohmeyer editor of the bethlehem globe-times and peter nyamwaya a moravian col lege student from kenya parr spoke of his experiences in africa this summer as a leader of a crossroads africa team in ghana these teams consisted of ten american students who after a period of extensive study of africa its languages and cultures visited one of the nations ami worked with the native people on a project set by them parr said that his group spent two months constructing a school house in a village of 300 people he said that the team lived in the homes of the people there ate food prepared by them and took part in village life the founda tion cement blocks and walls were all prepared and erected by the team far r said he sometimes won dered what an african foreign policy push debris when it acci dentally fell through the ground floor to the basement here the crew watches its rescue by bill bonnell and bill hylton senator barry goldwater is not a candidate who inspires confidence . . . either in the terms of logic or in prudence according to dr carey b joynt head of the international relations department dr donald b barry assistant professor of gov ernment termed lyndon b johnson the lesser of two evils as the two professors discussed the presi dential campaign sunday night in the richards house lounge the program was the first of four planned by the gryphon society before the november elections more than 60 students half of them standing for two and a half hours listened to joynt's and barry's 3 lehigh profs picked for technical societies dr donald barry gives his views on the 1964 presidential campaign while dr carey joynt listens intently during their freshman lecture series discussions sunday evening in the richards house lounge the two professors devoted a total of thirty minutes to introductory remarks and then spent two hours answering questions parr 3 other panelists weigh african progress brief introductory statements the following dis cussion period sparked by student participation had to be cut off after it had run for two hours dr joynt pictured goldwater the republican presidential nominee as a man who docs not let embarrassing things like facts stand in his way the sheer deficiency of sen goldwater as an intellectual personality is the point that is fashion ing the structure of the campaign joynt said he added that goldwater's candidacy had resulted in the blurring of important issues in the cam paign joynt said that some of goldwater's views may once have had validity but are no longer ap plicable in intelligently coping with foreign policy problems of the nuclear age dr joynt was particularly criti cal of goldwater's statements on nuclear issues and said he felt the senator had blurred the line be tween conventional and nuclear weapons also critical of goldwater's state ment on viet nam and our foreign alliances joynt said he felt gold water did not know enough about important topics he pictured goldwater as flailing about wild ly in the campaign in his discussion of the effects of the campaign upon our foreign relations dr barry cautioned that two caveats must first be under stood first most of the talk is about goldwater this is logical because he seems to stand apart from the norm barry said that goldwater is different from other presiden tial candidates and this is why see joynt page 3 consultants for the pennsylvania department of labor and industry the board to be composed of seven faculty members from the mechanical electrical and indus trial engineering departments of several colleges and universities in the state will advise the de partment of labor and industry on technical and industrial stand ards kane in addition to his teach ing duties is director of the manufacturing processes labora tory at the university a special ist in metal processing he is a consultant to governmental agen cies and industrial concerns pro fessor kane received his b.s from the pennsylvania state university and his m.s from lehigh the american chemical society has named dr raymond b myers chairman of the division of organ ic coatings and plastics chemistry he is a research professor of chemistry dr r c wood named to head german dept dr ralph c wood professor of german has been appointed to succeed dr john s tremper as head of the department of ger man dr wood has been a member of the staff since 1958 he was ap pointed a full professor in 1961 before coming to lehigh he held posts at cornell princeton perm state and muhlenberg a specialist in phonetics and syntax of german spoken and written outside germany dr wood has done considerable re search on german dialects in europe to further his research dr wood took a leave of absence from lehigh to study in europe under a guggenheim travel grant dur ing the spring of 1962 earlier this year he was awarded a year's grant-in-atd by the american council of learned societies dr wood has served as execu tive director of the lutheran world federation and the carl schurz foundation he is presi dent of the lehigh valley society archaeological institute of amer ica the u s a — maturing or dis integrating parr felt
