taught chemistry at lehigh will become president emeritus he has been president since august 1960 monroe j rathbone chairman of the board of trustees has said of the retiring president dr neville has brought to the presi dency both purpose and leader ship dr lewis will be installed at the founder's day exercise in october he has said that he will be most familiar with the engineering as pects of the university but that he will be interested in all phases of university curricula he is confident that lehigh can become a nucleus of academic af fairs in the area i have an aspiration a dream you located at 468 adams st he said he put out some of the fires but then set one in a second floor bedroom which got out of control one room on the second floor was completely gutted and most of the second floor was damaged by smoke and water one local fireman collapsed from smoke inhalation and was treated at st luke's hospital at the time of the fire the house was unoccupied being closed for the summer one of the firemen said that had the house been open supplying the fire with fresh air the house might have burned completely picture on page 4 but because all the windows were closed said the fireman the fire smoldered causing a great deal of smoke damage on the second floor firemen reached the fire be fore it had burned through the bedroom wall theta xis house manager ken hordch 64 said that the insur ance which the fraternity owns will cover the building but not the furniture and personal belong ings damaged most of the damage has already potential in lehigh he stated shortly after his appointment the new president comes to lehigh after 23 years with the bell telephone co during that time he served as director of switching research executive di rector of research in the commun ications systems division and managing director of systems studies for bellcom inc a bell subsidiary devoted to systems en gineering for the national aero nautic and space administration he does not plan to continue his active research but says he may return to some of it later dr lewis has a background similar to that of former lehigh president dr martin d whitaker whose death in 1960 brought dr neville to his present post dr whitaker came to lehigh from the oak ridge nuclear labora tory in tennessee in contrast dr neville rose through lehigh's academic ranks from assistant professor of chemistry in 1927 to president in 1960 a physicist and mathematician dr lewis holds three degrees from harvard and two from ox ford university where he was a rhodes scholar he also holds 33 patents on such devices as micro wave antennas and filters self correcting circuits digital error detection systems and integrating mobile radio-telephone systems he has written many academic and technical articles in addition to serving as a science consultant to government agencies including the president's scientific advis renovation of the south wing second floor n the alumni mem orial building is entering its sec ond month in a project to provide new quarters for the officers of the university president vice president and treasurer the renovation made possible by the 1962-63 annual giving fund began in early august and is expected to take three months all interior partitions have been razed the fireplaces removed or covered and the installation of floor ducts for electrical and tele phone connections has been com pleted all ceiling ducts and the supply and return lines for the heating system are in place the next major phases in the project will be hanging the drop ped ceiling and construction of new interior partitions the ceil ing will be covered with non-com bustible mineral fissured tile pos sessing favorable acoustic quali ties while most interior walls will be
