said of the retiring president dr neville has brought to the presidency both purpose and leadership dr lewis has said he will be most familiar with the engineer ing aspects of the university but will be interested in all phases of university curricula he does not plan to continue his active re search work but says he may re turn to some of it later dr lewis believes that lehigh w deming lewis managing director of bellcom inc has been named president of the univer sity succeeding harvey a neville dr harvey a neville 66 whom dr lewis will succeed in october will become president emeritus after 37 years of service to lehigh as an educator he had been pres ident since august 1960 monroe j rathbone president of lehigh's board of trustees enrollment increases for summer sessions summer school enrollment in creased about 30 per cent over last summer's figure according to dr norman h sam director of the summer sessions unofficial figures indicate ap proximately 1,600 graduate and undergraduate students enrolled in more than 200 credit courses and workshops offered the summer program divided into two six week sessions will end september 4th the early totals indicate a jump of more than 50 percent in president w d lewis administration offices moved during building renovation could become a nucleus of aca demic affairs in the area i have an aspiration a dream you might say that there is that kind of po tential in lehigh he said shortly after his appointment he will assume the lehigh presidency with a background similar to that of lehigh's former president martin d whitaker who died in 1960 dr whitaker came to lehigh from the oak ridge nuclear laboratory in tennessee in contrast dr neville rose through lehigh's academic ranks from assistant professor of chem istry in 1927 to president in 1960 dr lewis is a physicist and mathematician with three degrees from harvard and two from ox ford university in 23 years at bell telephone co he served as director of switching research ex ecutive director of research in the communications systems division and managing director of systems studies in bellcom inc a bell subsidiary devoted to systems en gineering for the national aero nautic and space administration dr lewis was a charter mem ber of the polaris command com munication committee and has served as a science consultant to government agencies including president's scientific advisory committee the office of science research-development air force and navy he holds 33 patents on such de vices as microwave antennas and filters self-correcting circuits dig ital error detection systems and integrating mobile radio-telephone systems he has written many academic and technical articles a native of augusta ga dr lewis currently is a resident of washington d c his wife the former marian carter chapman is a native of portland maine graduate enrollments dr sam indicated that addition of new workshop activities played a large part in this increase additions made to the workshop program stressed instruction in subjects of high contemporary interest a workshop in space science designed primarily for area ele mentary school teachers was con ducted in cooperation with the national aeronautics and space administration the one-week program led by a team of nasa consultants was designed to pro mote a better understanding of space activities and to provide experiences clarifying various space related phemonena other new workshops of partic ular value and timeliness were of fered in educational television and in natural history and ecology dr sam reported a large en rollment in the teaching intern program the program combines graduate study with salaried ex perience for students with little or no previous work in education during the summer the students also enjoyed a sayre park picnic and an asa parker room lunch eon held for them and educators from sponsoring school districts see teaching page 4 by bill bonnell the offices of the president vice-president and treasurer have been temporarily relocated to the second floor east wing of the university center to allow reno vation of the alumni memorial building offices the relocation completed july 30th by professional movers will last two to three months the temporary university cen ter locations are dr harvey a neville president room c-209 dr deming lewis president-elect room c-203 ; dr charles a seidle vice-president for administration room c-202 elmer w glick treasurer room c-213 and donald w schmoyer assistant treasurer room c-201 cyanide elects new members cyanide the junior class honor ary society to sponsor and super vise freshmen activities has elected 14 sophomores to member ship the men of cyanide will aid the members of the class of 1968 dur ing freshman orientation week and will later supervise different phases of freshman life including the dink hop the traditional freshman dance and the wearing of dinks the brown and white beanies members are chosen on the basis of high scholarship and demonstrated qualities of leader ship hall — the university center incidentally it is interesting to remember that for 57 years the president's office and indeed all administrative offices of the uni versity were located in packer hall but in the old west wing with the help of everyone con cerned we shall make the second sojourn as short and as easy as possible the office of dr glenn j christensen provost and vice president will remain on the third floor of the alumni memor ial building until the second floor project is completed complete renovation of the offi cials permanent quarters on the second floor south wing of the alumni memorial building has been made possible through the university's 1962-63 annual giving fund plans for the project call for the removal of all interior par titions and removal or closing of fireplaces new interior partitions will be constructed to provide five execu tive offices and two office areas for supporting personnel all will be serviced by a common recep tion area opening onto the second floor corridor work is still in the razing stage the interior partitions and flooring have been removed and workmen are removing plaster from portions of the north in terior wall of the wing in commenting on the temporary location of the offices dr neville stated we sincerely regret the in convenience caused by the removal of these rooms from normal use of the university center how ever the business of the university must go on and we are fortunate to be able to find some space for our offices during these few moments we request the indulgence of every one in adjusting to the presence of a different kind of activity on the second floor east wing of packer in the summertime the scenery on the lehigh campus gets better green leaves sunny grass and lots of girls even when you sneak up on them as here they seem to brighten the surroundings come fall and they will leave again only the women grad students remaining hidden in advanced seminars and remote laboratories but summer still has a while to go praise be lehigh selects new president bethlehem pa — thursday august 27 1964 blehigh university ¦ h/l •¦ rown and white 866-0331
