junior involved in fatal accident the bands of two reknown personalities in the jazz world will high light spring houssparty weekend april 27-29 lionel hampton famous king of the vibes and the popular kai winding with his septet and the trombone sound are the scheduled bands for the friday night dance on both floors of grace hall the musical history of both hampton and winding has added an outstanding note to the american jazz scene hampton began his in terest in rhythm before entering school and his first instrumental ex perience was with the snare drums when he was 15 he got a job in les kite's teenage band and he soon was on the west coast with hite in red spike's sharps and flats since then hampton has never faded from the musical picture he's been seen in films on tele vision shows and has made count less recordings kai winding a native of den mark made his american debut shortly after he came to this coun try in 1934 he played in sonny durham's band in 1941 and joined benny goodman's organization in 1945 few jazz enthusiasts can for get the popular j & x quintet that toured the u.s during the 50*s kai and j j johnson had made the trombone sound of the group a never-to-be-forgotten one j.j and kai separated in 1956 and returned to their individual careers the present group features four trombones and three rhythm instruments which carry on the or iginal with the car of john a hice of bethlehem and the pas senger mrs ruth a rice was killed sproul whose car was going north on center st told police that he fell asleep behind the wheel rice's car was going east on washington st and was hurled vocalists off for puerco rican week the interfraternity council last night unanimously adopted a reso lution expressing its concern re garding the autonomous rushing practices of the gryphon society the proposal also resolves that the ifc press for a binding ob ligation by which the concurrent offering of membership bids by the fraternity system and by the gryphon society be insured encouraging to the utmost de gree any activity of the student activities committee arcadia xvi ? or other duly organized groups which serves to explore the pres ent status of the gryphon society the proposal was presented by roymand hodil 63 ifc represen tative to arcadia hodil who will present this pro posal to arcadia at its meeting to morrow night was also author of a resolution recently passed by the the student council requesting the student life committee to inves tigate rushing practices of the gryphons and of the residence halls council urging the student life com mittee to investigate the recruit ing practices of the society the ifc proposal also expressed belief dr krupp to speak on aspects of eco arcadia meets tomorrow arcadia will meet tomorrow at 8:15 in the davis room of the uni versity center william l quay assistant to the dean of students will discuss the nature status and role of the gryphon society at the opening of the meeting quay is presently chairman of a subcommittee of the student activities committee which is completing a report on this subject that the autonomous rushing poli cies are conducted in a manner detrimental to the university com munity the glee club and its conductor robert b cutler associate profes sor of music will leave for puerto rico tomorrow morning and will return next saturday after a week long tour of the island the 41 vocalists will perform twice for the university of puerto rico on the rio piedras campus in san juan where they have been invited to sing for the bar asso ciation of puerto rico and for the san juan lions club the ymca of puerto rico is sponsoring two concerts one in mayaguez on the west coast and one in ponce on the south coast of the island between concerts the students will meet the people of the island their program will include a variety of styles sacred music from the 16th century and from the russian liturgy will contrast with the 20th century laudes de saint antoine de puduac by francis poulenc on the first pro gram contemporary music including the dorados by jonathan elkus associate professor of music will be included in another groups of selections folk music professor krupp will discuss the nature of controversy in economic thinking distinction will be made between semantic and substantive questions in the logic of economic theory as well as problems that arise concerning the scope and limits of theory dr krupp received his b.a at brooklyn college in 1949 and hi ph.d at the university of california in 1960 his teaching experience includes university of educational and physical-plant goals were announced last june dr harvey a neville president of the uni versity outlined a few of these goals to the alumni in tune 1961 during a speech he made famous with the statement lehigh will never waver in its commit ment to academic excellence in a later interview dr neville again spelled out the university's new policy line over the next few years he said lehigh would * provide facilities and staff for research centers which transcend traditional depart ment limits . . . provide broader training and attract talented people * expand the graduate school in both scope and enrollment * establish graduate internships in which a ph.d candidate would be associated with a senior staff member in teaching and research dr neville said that we propose special centers for instruction and research in such fields as materials sciences information re trieval management sciences engineering sys tems and water resources in light of certain imminent and recent events on campus this last statement serves as an excellent check-list for pointing out the university's progress toward the first two of dr neville's three main points first a materials research center has been created it is aimed at providing an inter-de partmental approach to the materials research undertaken on campus and is scheduled to appear later this spring by combining the facilities and staffs of some of the engineering and natural science departments the univeristy will be able to tackle research projects which would dwarf any one department an important aspect of the materials center will be its encouragement of small firms — which have problems falling in the range of materials research — to become members of the center in return the materials center will conduct seminars on topics of mutual interest and will pass on to the members the results of its latest work the development of the materials research center was largely motivated by dr joseph f libsch head of the department of metal lurgy he has been working with dr robert t gallagher head of the department of en gineering mechanics and assoc prof george e kane of the department of industrial en gineering for over a year to bring to comple tion an idea which had been in existence for several years brown and white dr harvey a neville by ifc proposal gryphon rushing questioned a nice quiet afternoon at the opera — it wasn't the opera or bach but no one seemed to mind these two happy couples seemed content to listen to the guitars twang and the singers scream last saturday at the frolics the rock and
