christensen appointed provost seidle franz vice presidents trustees also grant dr smiley terminal leave at full salary dr glenn j christensen dr charles a seidle and paul j franz jr were appointed university vice presidents at a meeting this morning of the board of trustees in new york city the trustees also granted vice president e kenneth smiley a terminal leave of absence for rea sons of health dr smiley secretary of the board of trustees since 1951 will continue to receive full salary and university benefits the vice presidential appointments effective feb 1 were announced by president harvey a neville following a noon meeting of the trustees m the university club dr christensen dean of the college of arts and science and director of the combined arts-engi neering program since 1956 will serve as vice president and provost dr seidle who joined the staff in 1938 and has been director oi the office of admission since 1952 will succeed dr smiley as vice president for administration franz assistant to the president and director of the development office since 1949 will now serve as vice president for development and public relations the only new position involved in this major ad ministrative reorganization friday january 19 1962 bethlehem pa vol 73 — special edition cooley new head coach leckonby will succeed sadler two on staff to take leaves for research michael t cooley william b leckonby in two major athletic staff promotions varsity football coach wil liam b leckonby will succeed gen percy l sadler as director of athletics and line coach michael t cooley will become head football coach the appointments which will be effective feb 1 were announced today by president harvey a neville gen sadler who will retire from the faculty on july 1 1962 will remain on the athletic staff in an advisory capacity until that time he has served as athletic director at the university since october of 1946 after more than 30 years of service with the u.s army from which he retired with the rank of brigadier general leckonby 44 came to lehigh in 1946 as the youngest football coach in the school's history and in 16 seasons his teams won 85 games lost 53 and tied five his 1950 team was lehigh's first unbeaten untied aggregation and in both 1957 and 1961 lehigh was awarded the lam bert cup as the best small-college team in the east a 1939 graduate of st lawrence university where he was an outstanding triple^threat halfback leckonby also cpached lehigh's golf team to . a 140r40-3 mark and three conference cham pionships in 16 seasons as a member of the american football coaches association leckonby has served on several committees and was chairman of the luncheon committee in 1961 he is a member of the ethics com mittee in 1961-62 cooley a 1948 graduate of the university of georgia joined the purdue vp next cls visitor two africans to matriculate two african students under the auspices of the african american institute will enroll in the arts engineering curriculum here next semester the students — james olabode ajayi a native nigerian and alex benjamin kamara a native of sierra leone — have complete pre liminary work in engineering at mount union college in alliance ohio two faculty members have been granted leaves of absence to com plete research next semester dr chuan-chih hsiung profes sor of mathematics will be on leave to carry out research at the university of california in ber keley where his work will be supported by a national science foundation grant he plans to r continue his studies ou rieman . nian and complex manif ords with boundaries dr ralph c wood professor of german whose opinion as an authority on modern language is sought by philologists abroad will study in europe under a guggen heim travel grant a specialist in the area of linguistics con cerned with the phonetics and syn tax of german spoken and written outside of germany he hopes to thoroughly . master one form of low german which is similar to the low german heard in*the " - united : states v • ? ' " : - ¦¦•" - '- - : - > dr pkul f chenea vice president of academic affairs at purdue will discuss the next decade in engineering and engineering educa tion in packard lab auditorium at 8 p.m feb 9 the lecture will be sponsored by tau beta pi engineering hon orary and the cooperative lecture series committee dr chenea received a b.s.c.e at the university of california he was awarded a master's degree in 1947 and a ph.d in engineering me chanics in 1949 by the university of michigan ¦ : a member of a middle states association of colleges and sec on^ary sc^o cammitteg which . evaluated : lehigh in 1960 the purdue " executive is ; a specialist in the elds of continuum p'hysies applied mechanics and electromagnetic field theory at purdue dr chenea assists and acts for the president with direct responsibility for planning organization and development of the academic program of the uni versity he supervises the purdue libraries audio-visual center de velopment of educational televis ion and acts for the president in the selection appointment and promotion of faculty personnel sword gets nsf post edward c sword assistant professor of civil engineering has been awarded a national science foundation science faculty fellowship for study and research at purdue university in lafayette indiana prof sword will begin his work under the year-long grant with the start of the 1962-63 academic year in september he is one of ap proximately 200 teachers in institutions of higher education through out the country selected for similar awards dr paul f chenea paul j franz dr charles a beidle dr glenn j christensen lehigh university brown and white lehigh staff in march of 1950 as varsity line coach he had pre viously been line coach for two years at the augusta military ac ademy ft defiance va at georgia he was a four-year letterman at center and played on three bowl teams cooley has coached fresh man wrestling and tennis at le high and last spring directed the varsity tennis team to the middle atlantic conference championship
