bethlehem pa tuesday oct 10 1961 866-0331 brown and white vol 73 no 7 lu industry cooperation commended by speaker exhcutive conference — president h a neville speaks with w h johnstone bethlehem steel vice president and trustee curtis after the ceremonies sunday dr h a neville inaugurated as 9th president of university receives ovation keys of university presidency symbol by cal mankowski dr harvey alexander neville was formally in stalled as ninth president of the university at the 83rd annual founder's day exercises sundaf in packer memorial church edward a curtis 26 vice chairman of the ex ecutive committee of the board of trustees pre sented dr neville with the keys of the university two gold keys tied with brown and white ribbon traditional symbol of the university presidency following his installation dr neville delivered a brief inaugural address i am grateful for your designating me to hold in trust the authority and responsibility of holding office as the ninth president of the university ' ' dr neville said i accept this honor with all due sense of hu mility he said and i am mindful of the need of guidance and help beyond my own resources i am confident that 1 can rely upon my able and dedicated colleagues on the faculty and staff of the university with their help and with the understanding and support of the students alumni and friends and trustees of the university which you mr cur tis have just pledged i undertake to fulfill to the best of my abilities the duties of the office of the president for the welfare and progress of lehigh university you have just heard my inaugural address dr neville concluded which is the shortest in the history of academic institutions may we now pro ceed with the exercises in a remarkable gesture considering the scene the capacity crowd of faculty graduates alumni see president page 4 by peter meszoly cooperation between industry and lehigh university was praised by william h johnstone vice president of bethlehem steel in his founder's day address sun day in his speech sharing the mountain he discussed the co operation between industry and educational institutions while formerly there seemed to be a gap between industry and educa tion he declared that now the gap seems to have been consid erably narrowed through close association award degrees to 144 grads in fall exercises see leith page 7 one hundred and forty-four de grees were awarded at founder's day exercises sunday an honorary doctor of laws de gree was bestowed on william h johnstone vice president of beth lehem steel co and founder's day speaker degrees were presented to 80 k'aduate students by dean robert d stout twelve doctor of philos ophy degrees were presented alum with 23 master of arts 25 master see ideals page 5 trying to close through the found ing of lehigh johnstone pointed out the ideals of asa packer in the overall edu cational policy at lehigh due to the growing importance of indus trial research the need for highly educated men in industry is great ly increasing yet said the speaker college as an example of this coopera tion he cited the training of more than 100 indian students through the combined facilities of bethle hem steel and the university other trends both national and local also demonstrate the closer ties between campus and indus try the speaker declared pointing out that the day of the great single benefactor such as asa packer is gone to be replaced by industrial support johnstone said democratic and corporate w h johnstone was awarded an honorary doctor ate of laws at the founder's day exercises sunday in presenting the degree university president h a neville praised johnstone for initiative and skill in en listing enthusiasm and sup port for new projects which have benefitted his industry community and fellow men giving not only insure a steadier ilow of financial nourishment from businessmen and industry to the university but the relation ships between the giver and re ceiver help to promote their mu tual understanding continuing on the theme of in dustrial and educational coopera tion the speaker remarked that it was the gap between intellect and industry that asa packer was keys of the kingdom — dr neville right receives the symbols of his office from trustee curtis during the presidential inauguration
