mmmmmmmmmm 866-0331 bethlehem pa friday oct 6 1961 johnstone to discuss sharing the mountain series or review — the big eye right hand picture above namely the snack bar television set attracts hordes of intense viewers as world series-ites hits campus in accompanying picture frosh sit just as tensely watching an unseen instructor explain for mulas and the like in anticipation of the first match 11 hour quiz the quiz was given yesterday vol 73 no 6 the class of 62 is looking for mutual shares william h johnstone financial and legal vice president of bethlehem steel co will receive an honorary doctorate of laws at the 83rd founder's day at 2:30 p.m sunday in packer memorial church johnstone will deliver the commencement ad dress sharing the mountain at the ceremonies in which approximately 70 undergraduate and 80 ad vanced degrees will be awarded top scholastic achievements earned by fresh man and sophomores last year will be announced by dean of students j d leith candidates for degrees will be presented by william h johnstone intramural debates to begin monday dean glenn j christensen arts and sciences dean carl h madden business administration dean loyal v bewley engineering and dean robert d stout graduate school vice president e kenneth smiley will present johnstone for the honorary ll.d degree music during the exercises will be offered by prof robert cutler university organist and by the chapel choir the alma mater will be sung by the graduates and the audience under the direction of prof jonathan b elkus the rev raymond e fuessle university chaplain will deliver the invoca tion and benediction dr and mrs harvey a neville will host a luncheon sunday for members of the board of trustees honored guests and university par ticipants in the exercises johnstone a member of the board of governors and past presi dent of the saucon valley country club is treasurer and a member of the board of historic bethlehem inc he has been a delegate for the united states government to the steel committee of the economic council for europe alumni prizes will go to the top see w johnstone page 5 as last year although more were expected there have been no significant changes in the rules or procedures of the debates since last year the williams debate is an elim ination contest twenty-five teams comprise round i but these will be narrowed down to eight for round 11 to be held oct 11 four see debate page 5 last year it was won by sigma alpha mv with mcclintic-marshall b-3 a close second certificates will be given to other ranking teams winners will also be honored on founders day oct 8 the contest is a result of the in terest of prof edward h williams a lehigh alumnus who set up a fund to encourage excellence in writing and speaking the prizes come from the interest from his gift this year 25 teams have regis tered for the content with frater nities comprising three-fourths of the groups entered the number of teams entered is about the same a suitable mutual-shares pro gram for this year's class gift is currently being sought by the 1962 class gift committee s ctewart burns committee chairman re rvaled wednesday the committee will meet on tuesday with fredric johnson vice president of winslow cohu md stetson brokers for this year's class gift to attempt to reach a decision for the program results of the meeting will be presented to the class cabinet for approval next tuesday also helping to decide on the program will be the 15 campaign captains presently being selected by the committee the goal for the class gift will be announced at the kick-off din ner to be held on nov 27 the mutual-shares plan an in vestment in a large mutual fund can double or even triple the or iginal investment after a period of 20 years after this time the com mittee will withdraw the amount and present it to the university to be used in whatever project the committee deems acceptable ¦ .. • ..,...-.? . i curtis is chairman alumni seek 600,000 for annual giving fund by david s lewandowski the wililams intramural debate contest will begin monday at 4:10 p.m in christmas-saucon hall twenty-five teams will vie for awards of 200 and 100 these cash prizes will be divided equally between memberes of the winning teams the contest sponsored by the division of speech will also award a replica of the paul revere silver bowl to the winning living group team the bowl becomes the per manent possession of the group a goal of 600,000 has been set by the 1961-62 annual giving fund projects for the current fund are teaching aids and equipment in cluding a closed-circuit television installation another distinguished professorship intramural playing fields and additional living accom modations . the campaign will be launched later this month among 19,000 al umni parents and friends according to frank c rabold 39 alumni assn president edward a curtis 26 vice president of the bell telephone co of new jersey will serve as national chairman of the annual campaign a poriicn of the funds will be devoted to the adaptation of all new developments in teaching itls and methods to the instructional system here future phases of the development of rew intramural and physical education facilities en the saucon valley campus extension where con solidit'on of athletic facilities was begun this summer the proposed endowment of a distinguished professorship planned by ihe campaign will provide the fifth in a series of 20 planned by tho university during the centennial development program past giving campaigns have endowed three professorships one of which has not yet been awarded dr j burke severs head of the dept see drive page 7 lehigh university brown and white game time — businessmen have adapted computer techniques for an intriguing new game by feed ing the machines information the participants can simulate actual business condition prof w smith is at right for game details see page 3 series or review
