men who turn out for daily practice is still large and prospects of a cut may be seen in the near future all competi tors for the regular team are ex tending themselves to make a good showing and the aldinger of harris burg pa marshall schedule to date includes 14 meets with army and navy on list the response to the call for tennis candidates was very gratifying and the prospects for a season even better than last year's may be realized the regulars remaining from the squad of last year are captain koegler mercur lawall hoag land and kingham with these men as a nucleus there are very fine prospects for a successful season fritz mercur is ill at present and was not present the meeting but he will soon be seen out on the courts getting into his championship form again although the above men tioned men are regulars there is still plenty of opportunities to remove them from their berths and some of the new material which has come into college this year will give the letter men a hard job to hold down their places.a very interesting sched ule has been arranged by man ager donaldson and the team will face some of the best net men in the eastern states practice is to start as soon as the courts are hard enough with the weather permitting the schedule is as follows april 12 philadelphia col lege of ost april 23 — open april 25 — fordham away april 26 — army away april 30 — rutgers may 2 — george washington may 3 f and m may 9 — columbia away may 10 — navy away may 14 — princeton away may 16 — brooklyn poly may 17 — pennsylvania may 21 — lafaytte away may 23 n y university may 24 — lafayette course in life saving to be instituted sound engineering education is desirable if graduate aspires to government work civil service examinations the united states geological survey in the department of the interior offers a career to the three types of engineers that constitute the technical staff of the organization — the topogra phic engineer the hydraulic en gineer and the geologist who may also be properly termed an engineer the engineer's work is many aided but most of his tasks lead him out of doors and often far afield the engineer in the pub lic service spends his life among men who do the world's work in no sense is he a shut-in eith er physicaly or mentally all his powers have wide fields for ex pansion the work of the topographic engineer embraces the mapping of the surface of the country and owing to the fact that near ly all the topographic surveying of the united states is done by the geollogical survey itself the engineers engaged in this work are trained in the technique of their work chiefly in the survey although they should possess as a basic preparation a sound en gineering education the work of the hydraulic en gineers in the geological survey embraces every phase of the study of the surface waters of the united ' states including stream flow in its relation to drainage power irrigation flood prevention and other mu nicipal use of water the work leads up to but stops at con struction basic education and training in construction are however desirable the work of the geologist i 3 directed in the main to the de termination of the mineral wealth of the united states it includes also a study of the his tory of our part of the planet as revealed by the rocks each lay er of which may be compared with a page in human history the time and the manner in which the records were inscrib ed on these rock pages the fos sils and the minerals that make up their text and illustrations and the ways in which the rec ord may be made useful to man are objects of the geologist's study the practical requisites for technical empolyment in the geological survey are college courses in engineering or geol ogy preferably supplemented by postgraduate studies employ ment in the survey then be comes for the first two or three years a further and more prac tical postgraduate course after which the member of the sur vey may be assigned to individ ual or co-ordinated research work all the positions described are filled through civil-service ex aminations which are held on an average about once a year requests for information as to examinations should be address ed to the united states civil service combission washing ton d c hudson river vehicular tunnel topic at c e meet tomorrow evening in the ar cadia room of drown hall a committee of nine men will meet to discuss argue and criticize constructively the present ath letic policy of lehigh these nine men composed of three al umni three members of the fac ulty and three students their purpose is to study the whole question and if they do not ap prove of a graduate manager are to foraiulate some other constructive plan for handling the business of intercollegiate athletics and report either to the directors of the alumni asso ciation or direct to the board of trustees says the current is sue of the alumni bulletin this is quoted from an article entitl ed a magnificent farce in the news and comment section in this article the writer de scribes cleverly though at times tainted with sarcasm what took place at the joint conference meeting on athletic s held march 7 at the request of dr richards the story printed in the issue of march 11 of the brown and white contained only that he wished to appeal though what actually happened at the memorable meeting is known all over the campus to quote the entire article would require too much space though abstracts from it will prove not only amus ing but enlightening " the play's the thing said old bill shakespeare well bill should have been present in drown hall on the evening of march 7 and he would have seen enacted a well coached and well acted play perhaps the farcical elements might not have been so evident to the bard of avon as it was to spectators more thoroughly ver sed in the trend of thought and action in american colleges and the ordinary attitude of mind of the modern undergraduates yet even shakespeare with his un canny knowledge of human na ture would have sensed the ab surdity of some of the events and sayings of this quite mem orable conference " the writer continued by say ing that the resolution looking towards a more businesslike ad ministration of lehigh's athfet ics was passed by the board of directors of the alumni as sociation in an effort to aid le high dr richards believing there was much to be said on both sides of the question call ed together the meeting of the three parties concerned stu dent faculty and alumni he requested the men be selected to have as widely varying views as possible certainly the alumni representatives met with this specification and what little fac ulty discussion thei-e was indi cated that they too had diverse ideas on the subject but the undergraduates seemed to be i unit in their opinion and came prepared to develope and ex pound a thesis that sounded a strange note in lehigh history and they did it well too hand ling their part in the debate with a coolness and adroitness that proved their ability what ever may have been thought of their tactics as one man re marked with a laugh after wards talk about your packed juries from what observa tions this amounted to the stu dent representatives having dis cussed the matter among them selves and having formed gen eral ideas on the subject on this point it might be said that because of the fact that they are still open to conviction they can give no statement of views as did the alumni the writer of the article in the alumni bulletin begrudged , continued on page 4 column i the following is the track schedule as arranged by mana ger stanley l mauser ■april s—lnter-class5 — inter-class meet april 12 — dickinson at car lisle april 25 — perm relays may 3 — delaware may 7 lafayette at easton may 10 — swat thmore at swarthmore may 17 rutgers may 23 and 24 — intercollegi ates at newark del this schedule is probably one of the most attractive that the brown and white trackmen have had for many seasons be ginning saturday april 5 the j trackmen will see action every week-end for the remainder of i the season with the exception of april 17 which is during the eiister vacation the inter-class meet will serve as a txyout for i the dickinson meet on the fol j lowing saturday the former imeet will be divided into two i parts the field events will be | held on friday and the track i events on saturday this is j necessary because of the large number of entries and also be ! cause of the lacrosse game which i will be held on the upper field on the same afternoon the first two men to piece in this meet will represent the brown and white in the dickinson meet j after the dickinson meet special j attention will be given to the quarter milers in preparation for the perm relays after the inter-class meet the next set of tryouts will be held either on april 15 or april 22 for field event men and on april 24 for track men this will be the most important set of try outs during the entire season because on the basis of the showing which a man makes in these will be determined wheth er he will run in the delaware lafayette and swart hmore meets it will be impossible to hold any tryouts during the week of may between these three meets because they are all to be held within one week the men who make the best showing up to thitf time will be entered in the inter-collegiates the brown and white will be represented in the annual perm relay carnival by a mile relay team each man to run a quarter of a mile it is a very unusual thing for a track team to com pete h three meets in eight days as will be done this season it was necessary to change the la fayette meet from may 10 to may 7k7 k because of the lehigh lafayelte baseball game on march field on satur day may 10 thus making it practi cally impossible to hold a track meet on the same field on the same afternoon since this change in schedule left an open date on may 10 a meet was scheduled with swarthmore at the little quaker institution rutgers will again send their trackmen to south mountain on may 17 in an effort to repeat their victory of last year the season will close on may 24 when the best performers for lehigh will journey to newark delaware to vie for the track and field supremacy of the mid dle atlantic association muhl enberg will not appear on the lehigh schedule this year since a date agreeable to both institu tions could not be agreed upon this squad which reported last thursday is one of the lar gest that has ever answered a call for candidates by coach morris kanaly among those who signified their intention of representing the brown and white in track and field are several wearers of the l and many other men who also com con t i ti tirtl on i'uiic „'. column '> ) instructon will be given four thursday afternoons starting march 27 a practical course in life saving is to be instituted at le high under the direction of cap tain bell who will be assisted by lieutenants graham and boy den and by travis and freeman of the swimming team the course will consist of four les sons followed by an examina tion for membership in the am erican red cross life saving corps instruction will be given be tween the hours of four and five every thursday afternoon be ginning this thursday and the course is open to every student of the university who is inter ested in this work men who de sire to avail themselves of the course are requested to apply to seregant madden before thursday march 27 on thursday april 3 the civil engineering society will hold a meet at which the prin cipal speaker will be an engineer employed in the construction of the hudson river vehicular tun nel this meeting will be the last under the old regime as of ficers for next year will be elect ed at that time following the meeting the usual refreshments and smokes will be served the topic is of interest not only to civil engineers but also many others whose profession in volves many problems which will be brought at this meeting closes on april 30th the local chapter of pi dtlta epsilon the honorary journalis tic fraternity will conduct an editorial competition opening immediately and closing on ap ril 30th this competition is open only to students regularly enrolled in lehigh university members of pi delta epsilon excepted athletic situation at le high the members of pi delta ep silon believe that the following subjects are of great interest to the student body and are offer ed as titles for the editorials what a lehigh student thinks of the 18th amend ment faculty regulation vs stu dent government why students should sup port lehigh publications where is the greater le high proposed plan for advertise ment of lehigh the editorials must be type written and on one side of the j paper only and are limited to j five hundred 500 words in length any competitor is privileged to submit as many editorials as he desires the judges of the contest will be the members of pi delta ep silon for the winning editoiial a prize of ten dollars 10.00 shall be awarded also the ! winning editorial as well as the jbest of those submitted will be published in the brown and white the name of the competitor shall not appear on the editorial but shall be inserted in an en velope to be attached to the ed
