bethlehem pa the alcoa foundation has presented the univer sity with a gift of 100,000 for an endowed professor ship in metallurgical engineering and seven scholar ships to be awarded to outstanding engineering students the endowed professorship will be known as the alcoa foundation professorship of metallurgical en gineering and will honor the memory of a prominent faculty member dr joseph w richards 86 the pioneer authority on aluminium metallurgy dr richards was a successful teacher author chemist metallurgist and authority on aluminum the foundation's gift was made to the centen nial development fund to date the centennial ? « dr harvey a neville fund has raised 6,000,000 towards a goal of 22 000,000 of which nearly half is for endowment pur poses dr harvey a neville provost and vice presi dent said we are very grateful to the alcoa foun dation for this support of lehigh's centennial de velopment fund a primary objective of the development program is the raising of funds for university endowment and distinguished professor ships tt is essential to academic excellence the theme of lehigh's centennial fund to maintain a superior faculty dr neville said about the seven alcoa scholar ships we appreciate this support of the university's academic program and we com mend the alcoa foundation for their interest in providing educa tional opportunities for deserving youth at lehigh the university's committee on undergraduate scholarships and loans will select the receipients and the awards will be made upon the commit tee's recommendation the total value of the seven al newark delaware this saturday the completion of this coverage marks the end of a project started last year ever upward — the mass of stone and mortar soon to ionn the entrance to the physics building marks the completion of the renovation of the building the project started last spring is scheduled for completion this fall ? ? new athletic facilities aborning across mount construction of lehigh's new 1,600,000 athletic facilities in saucon valley which will include both intramural and intercollegiate playing fields and a special all-weather quarter-mile running track began in july the project expected to be completed by fall 1961 is pne of the goals in the university's centennial program which seeks to provide 322,000,000 for faculty endowment scholarships buildings and campus expansion by lehigh's 100 th anniversary in 1965 unique among the new facilities planned is an all-weather quarter mile track composed of a new watershedding material called grasstex the track will be the first of its kind in pennsylvania and the sec ond to be constructed in the east installations of the same ma terial are currently in use at the university of florida the univer sity of wisconsin and st john's university and have been found to shed water almost instantly and maintain a uniform consistency despite great temperature changes these advantages combined with the fact that the surface is suitable tables surrounding the performing area gordon hoare president of the junior class anticipates a crowd of approximately 2,000 mainly from the lehigh area will attend the concert the first major social program implemented through the univer sity's 22 million centennial development program was announced to day by dr harvey a neville vice-president and provost plans to double graduate enrollment and to permit further expan sion of the graduate program within the next five years are included in the program the decision to place increased emphasis on the graduate program dr neville stated is for the purpose of producing larger numbers of highly qualified teacher-scholars for the college classrooms research scientists and engineers for the laboratories and broadly-educated man agers for industry and business the program is also designed to identify and enlist in challenging programs students who show capacity for advanced study and research +~ a^r nnnfini.m.e on/i q r>r>oim-jiti»cl programs through the undergrad uate years for selected students and to offer new graduate pro grams in areas which cross or com bine traditional courses to accomplish its objectives the new program will establish teach ing internships for graduate stu dents additional graduate fellow ships an enlarged college honors program to include freshman and sophomores senior apprenticeships engaging selected seniors in teach ing and research summer scholar ships for students of the univer sity and nearby institutions and additional endowed professorships further development of grad uate programs will provide in tellectual stimulus and strength to undergraduate instruction through out the university dr neville said while the new knowledge and the needs of the future will require more specialists in the established disciplines the complevity of the problems of science technology and business necessitates the syn thesis of knowledge through inter disciplinary programs of advanced study dr neville stated through this means beginning at the graduate level but with its in fluence permeating the undergrad uate colleges an integration of see trustees page 9 brubeck and jimmy j to
