varsity loses to lafayette price five cents soccer recognized as a minor sport eastonians capture the fastest game of season bethlehem pa friday january 16 1920 score 27=22 king lafayette makes 5t5 t field goals donavan 3 bottled in bond mandolin club selected track meet and lacrosse game scheduled lasts ' four days interfraternity dance and college dance new features the lehigh university rifle team which has already been en 1 tered in the intercollegiate gallery j championship matches of the na j tional rifle association for this j spring needs more material in | the coming shoots the team will ! represent lehigh against such col 1 leges as cornell perm and yale j and it can be readily seen that the | ten places on the team should be filled by the ten best shots in the college if lehigh is to make the i showing that she should every man who qualified as ex pert rifleman sharpshooter or marksman while in the service or who has done good shooting in civilian life should turn out it is not necessary however to be a crack shot,or even a good shot in order to belong to the rifle club and thereby have full use of the range rifles and ammunition it | is only necessary that you take j enough interest to turn in your | name now and come out and shoot when practice begins in the near future it will be a good oppor tunity for those who like to shoot and who want to improve their shooting with a view to making the tehm cultti"i.jl"j!,ullg is lilt n it a j judge and faculty advisor and j there will be plenty of good coach ing for the whole squad further more the necessary rifles ammu nition targets and other equip ment are furnished by the u s government the important thing at present is to get your name in and listed on the rolls of the rifle club so that the complete roster of the club may be sent to the national rifle association at washington as soon as possible telephone your name to j a holmes at the chi psi house or leave it with the sergeant in colonel lang's office lehigh to meet other colleges in rifle matches candidates wanted for rifle team council plans junior week vol xxvii no 27 bucknell here saturday seventeen men to compose the local club local tossers meet upstate team in taylor gym schedules ratified for different teams at the recent meeting of the le high university athletic associa tion held last monday afternoon it was decided that soccer be regard ed as a minor sport at lehigh and that a certain fixed amount of money be given each year towards the expenses of the team the amount fixed for 1921 was two hundred and fifty dollars a com mittee was appointed to look into the matter of the advisability of awarding " l s " to the soccer team reports were made by the man agers of the various athletic teams w hunton manager of lacrosse presented the lacrosse schedule for the coming season this schedule was accepted and manager hunton was authorized to arrange games with swarthmore on may 22 the same date as the lafayette base ball game and with the navy on april 10 manager hammond was authorized to add an extra game of basketball to the schedule that with the crescent a c on janu ary 24 the manager of football an nounced the following candidates for the position of assistant man ager in that sport for the coming season jacobs jonneli and o'keefe it was decided to make an attempt to enter with prince ton in all intercollegiate sports the next meeting was called for january 22 wrestling tryouts swimming meet on wednesday january 21 the first tryouts for the wrestling squad will be held the winners of which will represent lehigh in the first match of the season this match will be with springfield y m c a whom lehigh has not met on the mat for several years past springfield generally has a strong aggregation and should prove an excellent test of the strength and prowess of the local squad this year there are a large num ber of men out for the team and from the looks of the material a good squad should result how ever the two heaviest classes are represented only by capt booth and r good but these two are en tirely capable of holding down the two big man jobs at a meeting of the inter-fra ternity council held monday even ing in drown hall tentative plans were made for junior week which will begin monday april 26 and terminate friday april 30 mon day evening april 26 the inter fraternity dance will be held tuesday evening the sophomore cotillion wednesday evening the junior prom and thursday even ing the mustard and cheese show followed by a formal university dance the social committee has plan ned to hold the sophomore cotil lion the junior prom and the uni versity dance in drown hall while a new plan has been adopted for the inter-fraternity dance in stead of holding this dance in drown hall it has been proposed that the various fraternities on the campus be used for dances which mnlof tv>r v y)it fhosp dtesiri-ft 2*2 * â– to circulate around to the different houses this idea is a new one here but it has worked satisfactor ily in other colleges it will be a welcome innovation as it will help everybody to become acquainted wednesday afternoon of junior week there will be a track meet and thursday afternoon a lacrosse game following these contests and also on tuesday afternoon the fraternities that wish to do so will hold their tea dances the frater ities planning to entertain in any way will submit their plans to the social committee who shall arrange matters so that conflict of enter tainment may be avoided the kappa beta phi society proposes to give a tea dance in drown hall on tuesday afternoon of that week arrangements are now being made to secure high-class orchestras for these days as freshmen are not allowed to attend the sophomore cotillion a freshman dance will probably be held the same evening at one of the fraternity houses the junior prom is open to all le high men including freshmen as is also the university dance judg ing from the present outlook this junior week should surpass any hitherto held at lehigh lacrosse schedule epitome pictures the next game on lehigh s basketball schedule will be played on saturday afternoon when the team is slated to meet bucknell here the players who will start the game for lehigh will probably be the same which have composed the team in the earlier games the work of these men in the pennsyl vania and lafayette games was excellent but unless the game should prove unusually close a number of second string men will probably be given a chance to show what they can do bucknell is known to have a good team this year they have played a number of games so far having made a southern trip and also a northern trip in point of experi ence bucknell is probably ahead of the local team besides several veterans of last year s team the up state institution has some good new material and should offer strong opposition a good sized crowd is expected to be on hand to witness dorris kennedy g waddell straub g woodring discuss real efficiency in the fastest game of the season thus far the brown and 1 white quintette met defeat at the hands of the eastonians on wednesday evening in the old barracks build ing at lafayette the game began with a rush and each team showed that it was out to win lafayette started the tallying by a ringer for king but lehigh caught them nap ping and hess slipped over the brown and white's first tally this was followed by a foul goal by capt straub the scoring con tinued in much the same manner the teams running almost neck and neck throughout the first half at the end of this half the score stood 18 to 14 in favor of lafayette in the second half the lehigh aggregation tightened up their de fens considerably with the result that the scoring of the maroon and white quintette was srreatlv re jduecd king who had been play i ing a stellar game at forward and had dropped four tallies through the basket in the first half was con fined to a single goal in this period donovan began to find the basket and dropped over two neat ones in something like his old form on account of the length of the floor the brown and white team was somewhat at sea at first and it took them a little while to get their passing in control when they did however they outplayed their op ponents in every department of the game hess at center and donovan at forward were the two stars of the game for lehigh time and again the all pivot man outjumped his opponent or intercepted passes his passing and floor work were a feature of the game and it is due to his passing and the specd 1 of rote and donovan that the aggre gation played such a fast game straub also played a steady game at guard and was especially strong in the foul shooting out of twelve | tries he scored eight times to this he also added one basket from the field the game was remarkable for the number of personal fouls which were called by the referee dur ing the second half king and reeves the lafayette stars played i with the penalty of being put out of the game staring them in the | face for they had already com ! mittedl three personal fouls each simendinger was put swim ming team in action at its first home meet in taylor pool with the allentown y m c a the oppos ing squad consists mainly of ex collegiate swimmers with e j heraty former perm waterman as its captain the time of start ing has been changed from 3:30 p.m to 2 30 p.m so that students will be able to see both the swim ming meet and the basketball game directly following the brown and white swimmers have developed into good shape through the strenuous practice of the past week and are determined j to be victorious in their first home encounter of the season admis sion will be free to all members of the student body and a large turn out of men is expected to swell the gallery attendance university dance the mandolin club held a re hearsal last monday night in drown hall and the glee club one on wednesday night practice on two new pieces was begun by the mandolin club the final selec tion of the men who are to compose the mandolin club was made and includes seventeen men from now on only the men listed below will report to the rehearsals the efforts of all the men who have been . coming out at the meetings are very much appreciated by the club and probably some of them will get another chance to play in the club later on the elimination was based chiefly on ability to handle the music but attendance at rehearsals was also considered the men who are to report at future re never played le high before in this branch of sport crescent athletic club is again booked after a lapse of three years stevens institute of technology of the southern league is on the lat ter part of the program the game being played at hoboken the final schedule as arranged for the coming season is as follows april 10 navy at annapolis april 17 yale at home april 24 crescent athletic club at brooklyn april 29 syracuse at home may 8 stevens at hoboken ; may 15 uni versity of pennsylvania at home may 22 double header swarth more-lehigh lacrosse and lafa yette-lehigh baseball at home may 29 employer the private life of the employee is of vital in terest to the employer especially when that employee is in a respon sible position in the same way the actions of the members of a team off the
