musical clubs again organize bethlehem pa friday october 3 1919 council plans inter-frat sports rutgers smoker first this season varsity to meet ursinus saturday vol xxvii no 3 series of smokers planned to precede important games plenty of music greek letter societies constitution ratified by all local game should give line on team's ability several veterans in ursinus line-up conferring doctorate upon chas l taylor 76 will be the feature of exercises chas l taylor prominent in the steel world designed first steel car good turnout at first meeting booster committee appointed gave taylor gym training table opens address by dr emery closely connected with lehigh athletic interests member of board of trustees squad given extensive signal drill new shifts tried out in practices many alumni expected back sod to be turned for alumni memorial hall the annual founder's day ex ercises of lehigh university will be held at 11:30 a.m tomorrow in packer memorial church when dr natt m emery vice-president of the university will give the ad dress of the day president drink er will be in charge the exercises will be notable for the conferring of the honorary de gree of doctor of engineering up on one of the distinguished and best loved sons of lehigh — charles l taylor of the class of 1876 president of the carnegie hero fund and vice-chairman of the united states steel and carnegie pension fund the first meeting of the inter fraternity council was held mon day evening in drown hall six teen fraternities were represented president bellman who presided announced that every fraternity had ratified the constitution he also said that that the constitution was being bound and a copy would be sent to every fraternity in the near future the next question which arose was the matter of requiring attend ance at the meetings after con siderable discussion an amendment to the constitution was proposed which provided for a fine of five dollars for failure to attend the regular meetings this fine is to be payable within 30 days under penalty of the fraternity losing its vote plans for inter-fraternal athletic contests dances and other social affairs were extensively discussed but finally were referred to the re spective committees the project of having faculty or alumni mem bers belong to the council was then spoken of the faculty members would be of necessity fraternity founder's day sports on wednesday evening a meet ing was held in drown hall for the purpose of reorganizing the various musical clubs which have been in active for the past few years after the meeting was called to order brady 20 was elected temporary chairman various means were discussed by which the glee club mandolin and banjo clubs might be brought into exis tence again professor t edgar shields volunteered to donate his help as much as possible and made a number of suggestions concern ing reorganization he pointed out that the failure of the musical clubs in the past was due mainly to poor management and advised the men to choose a competent bus iness manager it was decided to appoint a com mittee of eight to take charge of all try-outs and to attend to publicity the men chosen were e m allen 20 ; r wilbur 20 ; c r berner 21 e w bowden 21 h k brady 21 k m downes 21 m m esterson 21 ; e m loeser 21 the men were impressed by tot snt^l^^iateii good glee club would soon be able to gain support in the student body and that it is up to the members themselves to gain the reputation which would insure this support men after some discussion this question was laid on the table until the next meeting the next meeting of the council will be held the second monday in october the first meeting seems to in dicate that the new council will perform wonders in establishing a closer relationship between the var ious greek letter societies which will be most fortunate for lehigh the first smoker of the year will be held friday evening october 11th at 7 30 p.m in the game room of the gymnasium it is hoped that this smoker will stir up the enthusiasm of the students to such a pitch that the brown and white team will be unable to do anything else but wallop the rutgers eleven the following after noon in revenge for the 39-0 score piled up by them last year with this end in view the booster committee has arranged a program of fine speeches several wrestling and boxing bouts are promised and good entertainment is insured the entire program will be announced in the next issue of the brown and white giving a complete list of the speakers and entertainers as yet the program has not been completed and any one who can and would like to do anything in the way of entertainment is urged to communicate with j j ship herd chairman of the booster committee at the the mining engi neering department on behalf of the faculty and by bishop talbot on behalf of the board of trustees of which mr taylor is a member benediction following the exercises there will be the ceremony of turning sod at the west end of the campus for the alumni memorial hall upon which work will shortly be started after lunch in the college com mons the trustees faculty and visiting alumni will join the student body in attendance at the football game in taylor stadium between ursinus and lehigh inclement weather prevented coach keady from having long wednesday afternoon football practice this week and so the squad was put through some snappy signal drills on the basketball floor and several new shifts were tried out dave maginness coaching the second string men judging from the improvement shown by the varsity lehigh should have little trouble in ad ding a second victory to their credit when they meet the ursinus eleven on taylor field at 3 p.m tomorrow afternoon ursinus has several veterans on this year's team and succeeded in forcing rutgers to use practically all their regulars with very few substitu tions in order to win last satur day's contest g&fl^jjtomorrow will be^^of riterest to the student as to the brown and white boosters in bethlehem as it will afford an opportunity to as certain lehigh s chances for re venge over rutgers on the follow ing week for the defeat received at their hands last season the entire squad except those suffering from minor bruises are in excellent shape to enter tomor row's contest and it is to be ex pected that coach keady will again try out most of the most promising men for positions on the regulars there has probably never been a year in the history of the college when competition was so keen and the squad at pres uate of the medico-chi college of philadelphia and one of the first physicians to respond to the call of the allies early in the war for medical men will be the speaker of the evening doctor kern received his com mission in the united states army but was assigned to the english forces for service he was captur ed by the germans and held a prisoner for eight months during which time he was required to treat wounded teutons doctor kern has truly had a remarkable experi ence and has only recently return ed to this country prior to being mustered out he did special medi cal work in the united states army camps mrs w h lynn the well-known soprano soloist and a pupil of signor pietro audusico the metro politon grand opera singer will be the soloist special selections will also be rendered by the orchestra the sunday y m c a meet ings are getting into full swing again ; the attendance last sunday was encouraging and the program arranged for the coming meeting warrants an even larger turnout the attention of the new men in particular is called to these meet ings when president drinker in be half of the trustees and faculty of lehigh university confers the honorary degree of doctor of engi neering at the founder's day ex ercises tomorrow the brown and white-lined hood will fall upon shoulders that have carried engi neering business and philanthropic enterprises of great magnitude for many years and that have in addi tion helped to bear in a peculiar measure the burdens and plans of the university that now gives him its highest honor the lehigh brown and white takes pleasure in giving a brief sketch of this dis tinguished son of lehigh charles lewis taylor was born in philadelphia on april 3 1857 a son of the late mr and mrs john t^lort^^si 0 f ff s 11 inent in the sugar refining indus try and from 1874 to 1886 was treasurer of the pennsylvania railroad mr taylor entered lehigh in september 1872 and was gradu ated in 1876 as valedictorian of his class with the degree of engineer of mines his first employment after leaving the university was in the engineering office of dr drink er he then went with the cam bria iron company as assistant chemist and later became assist ant superintendent of the blast furnaces at johnstown as a young man mr taylor sprang into prominence in the steel world in 1880 he was made chemist of the pittsburgh bessem er steel company and two years later became its superintendent he retained this position after the merger with the carnegie interests for three years up to 1887 mr taylor was superintendent of the great homestead steel works he was succeeded in this position by charles m schwab the one other recipient thus far of lehigh s de gree of doctor of engineering during the next two years mr taylor was general manager of the hartman steel company another carnegie plant and from 1890 to 1892 he was assistant secretary of carnegie phipps & company ltd in 1893 he was promoted to be assistant to the president of the carnegie steel company ltd with general supervision over the operations of all works he re mained in active touch with the carnegie company up to 1901 during his active career in the steel industry mr taylor made im portant contributions to the science and practice of the trade he was a pioneer in supplanting wrought iron with soft steel and was de clared to have been first in the suc cessful production of soft steel for pipe nails ship plate and struc tural steel he accomplished work of original character and of great potential scope in his early connec tion with the designing and manu facture of a steel suitable for steel car construction he himself de continued on third page students of the university should understand that in setting aside founder's day to be annual ly celebrated and observed as a tribute of respect and remem brance of the founder of the uni versity it was not intended to create a holiday involving absence from the university while all scholastic exercises are intermitted for the day attendance at the chapel exercises at 11 30 is not only required but is considered one of the most important duties of the year and students are re quired to be present h s drinker president a meeting of the soccer asso ciation was held in the trophy room taylor gymnasium last wednesday for the purpose of re viving soccer and the old time ' ' in terest of the student body pro fessor percy hughes who has been coach for several years gave a short address concerning the or ganization of a new and better as sociation for the coming years last year we had what might be called a team with a schedule but the backing of this team by the student body was lacking pro fessor hughes in his speech said that if this new association would work hard and gain the popularity of students and faculty of the uni versity it would surely meet with success and gain a firm foundation similar to several years ago continued on third page the material for this year looks very promising ' ' whitey ' ' lewis an old man at the game is taking charge now until practice gets up to the present date several games have been scheduled and many more are expected by the end of this week lehigh will en ter the pennsylvania intercollegi ate league against lafayette pennsylvania swarthmore haver ford and perm state so many hard games may be looked forward to by the followers of soccer there will be mid-week practice games with several of the local clubs due to the fact that saturday afternoon will be taken up with the varsity football game the founder's day sports between the sophomore and freshman class teams will be postponed until the following week as the plans now stand the football game will be played monday october 6 and the baseball game and relay race will take place wednesday october 8 taking account of weight speed and all other important factors which go to make a good football team the sophomore and fresh man football teams seem to be pretty evenly matched but as yet neither has developed any co-ordin ate system of offense or defense in baseball the freshmen appar ently have the edge on the team which is to represent the class of 1922 out of the twenty or more freshman candidates a strong team is being chosen and rounded into shape under the direction of mathag 20 at the present time there are only nine men out for the sophomore team but more men are expected to make their appear ance this week time trials for the relay teams are to be held thursday afternoon at 4:10 when the teams will be chosen candidates working out for the sophomore team are : haldeman coxe doan grace and sharp ; while the freshmen are : burgess colburn cornell ken nedy leister lodge mcpherson moyer veely rhoades wight and wright it is a foregone conclusion that the games between the sopho mores and freshmen will be full of spirit and good sportsmanship as well as offering a good line on the abilities of the new men in the various branches of sport all candidates in each sport intend to make the best of the few extra days in order to produce winning teams brown and white program for annual founder's day exercises price five cents

men are expected to make their appear ance this week time trials for the relay teams are to be held thursday afternoon at 4:10 when the teams will be chosen candidates working out for the sophomore team are : haldeman coxe doan grace and sharp ; while the freshmen are : burgess colburn cornell ken nedy leister lodge mcpherson moyer veely rhoades wight and wright it is a foregone conclusion that the games between the sopho mores and freshmen will be full of spirit and good sportsmanship as well as offering a good line on the abilities of the new men in the various branches of sport all
