p.m wednesday residence halls dates on the other hand are to be registered with mrs eberman's office in mcclintio-mai shall house sunday activities must end at 5 p.m sharp the dean's message states and the failure of any group to observe this rule will be referred to the judiciary committee the spring houseparty dance featuring lous armstrong will be gin at nine friday evening and end promptly at 1 a.m living group parties may begin however one hour before the end of the dance and oedipus strikes high professional level herd and lee cass as the messenger all experienced solo ists sang very important supporting roles with understand ing musicianship one of the high points of the show was the final chorus of the theban citizens who with the messenger describes the frightful doom of oedipus and jocasta in clearly modulated voice h barrett davis as narrator punctuated the performance reminding the audience of the well-known story without ever intruding on the continuity of the music and the dramatic action prof cutler led the orchestra chorus and soloists through an involved musical score with sensitiveness to or chestral and choral balance and precision of attack tempos were right throughout a certain muddiness of sound in the bass instrument which may be attributed to the acoustical situation in grace hall was noticeable where the dry death see kudos page 4 spanish civil war brass and tympani contributed to the effectiveness of the piece the entire production of oedius rex which followed was performed on a high professional level especially com mendable was the clarion tenor voice of oedipus sung by george shirley recent winner of the metropolitan audition his penetrating presentation of oedipus never lost its mobility even as he revealed the ultimately human self-pity of a king who must sacrifice himself to the inevitable fate over which he has no control evelyn sachs contralto as jocasta was pure musically and vocally in her long demanding aria although her in terpretation of the aria was somewhat romantic in the op eratic tradition of bizet and perhaps even massenet it served to contrast effectively with the all-male cast and chorus thomas paul as teresiase norman myrvik as the shep by wilbur w hollman head of the music department cedar crest college a large appreciative and attentive audience convened last saturday evening in grace hall to see and hear the stage presentation of a major music-dramatic work the oedipus rex of igor stravinsky the text of this time honored greek drama by sophocles was arranged by jean cocteau and translated into latin by jean deanileou after a short group of selections by the glee club the appetite was duly wetted for the main course of the eve ning a stirring welsh chorale opened the glee club group and was followed by a beautifully executed latin motet by jacobus de kerl the lehigh glee club under prof robert cutler's direction then presented samuel barber's musical setting of stephen spender's poem a stopwatch and an ordinance map a serious evocation of the tragedy of the lehigh university brown and white spring f ever vofe for 67 hp queen see page 5 . . .
