by jeff stives the king of jazz — louis satchmo armstrong — and his all stars will perform for spring houseparty weekend april 28-30 in the streets of new orleans atmosphere of decorated lower floor grace hall satch and his renown group will bring forth the music which has fascinated and thrilled audience s all over the globe upper floor grace hall will fea ture the country club music of bob mcclister who returns to campus after a successful perform ance at spring hp in april 1959 as united states ambassador of jazz armstrong and his all stars have performed throughout nearly all of the free world to people who cannot speak english yet who know and love the satchmo sound louis has become known to millions as ambassador satch armstrong has never performed for a lehigh audience but an over a night at monte carlo — trackside bettors play the ponies at simulated gambler's racetrack the win place and show set found them selves at home as gaming tables invaded the lower floor of grace hall saturday night at another ifc weekend the 3,500 in ifc script given each couple could be parlayed into bigger and better sums on such standard devices as black jack five card stud chuck luck craps and the traditional game of roulette hope of christian unification futile william s merwin contemporary american poet will read original selections of his poetry at 4:15 p.m april 4 in the univercity center osbourne room merwin's appearance will be the fifth of the current session of the cooperative lecture series cosponsors will be the department of english and the class of 64 merwin born in 1927 was graduated from princeton university with a b.a degree he has been the recipient of a kenyon review fellowship in poetry included among his published books are a mask for janus which '%"*"'¦ received the yale series of young er poets award and green with beasts which was the 1956 choice of the poetry book society of eng land he has also composed the dancing bears and the drunk in the furnace many of his poems have ap peared in such magazines as the new yorker harper's and the nation other poems have been pub see merwin page 7 pledges for the 1961 class gift campaign continue to flow in ac cording to richard e shulman chairman of the campaign approximately 145,000 in pledges have been received so far shulman pointed out this far sur passes any other campaign by a graduating class he claimed on a percentage basis the cam paign is also booming the highest percentage record was about 80 per cent shulman said so far the class of 1961 has a 78-80 per cent participation not all pledges matriculate after the class graduates however shul man believes nevertheless that when all of the money is received the total will surpass the previous high of 127,000 under the plan accepted last fall the funds will be placed in the dreyfus fund for 20 years and then turned over to the univer sity the final phase of the drive be gan march 1 the rev gustave weigel ... on christian unity by cal mankowski christian unification has been moving very rapidly in the last two or three years the rev gustave weigel s.j distinguished ro man catholic theologian and educator told about 60 persons in the os bourne room thursday expectation of any large-scale unification of christendom he de scribed however as an illusion and as futile lecturing on the ecumenical movement can christians unite fathed weigel saw a tremendous good coming from the association of members of different christian faiths he denned the word ecumenics as any aspiration action or in stitution founded to bring different churches together in conversation with the hope of becoming one this definition he said has been in use only for the last 30 years after tracing the evolution of organized ecumenical movements in the christian church before and since 1910 father weigel outlined three devices which have been used for the past 50 years in attempts at unification the three — compromise comprehension and conversion — are not necessarily the only devices he said but they are the only three that have been observed until now all three he said have been used individually or in combination at one time or another and left four years later with the rank of brigadier general usafr goldwater was first elected to the united states senate in 1952 and was reelected in 1958 the senator is presently a mem ber of the interior and insular affairs committee the labor and public welfare committee the select committee on labor man agement relations and the repub lican policy committee speaking at many college cam sayre park in college goldwater was a member of sigma chi the arizona senator has al ready accepted the invitation to visit the campus although the de tails of his visit haven't been for warded to him for his acceptance yet hoare said sen goldwater was educated at the staunton military academy and at the university of arizona for one year he went into the here september 28 gor don hoare president of the class of 63 announced today goldwater the outspoken con servative republican will arrive on campus in the early afternoon so that he will be able to visit wlr for an interview program in conjunction with the brown and white before attending a class banquet probably to be given in the university center following the banquet the sophomore class is planning a pub lic lecture in either grace hall or packard laboratory auditorium with ardio coverage to the lehigh campus through wlr goldwater described by hoare as a devoted fraternity man will then drums arvell shaw bass billy kyle piano barret deems and sidney catlett drums dick cary piano and trummy young trombone satch has played his golden lacquered trumpet on millions of discs while
