melodrama night and television programs of interest to students the results of arcadia asso ciates elections were announced president seth thomas 63 vice president eric giesa 63 secre tary-treasurer timothy bird 64 a motion to look into the ser vices provided by the bookstore and make suggestions was passed by arcadia a motion that rhc support the a tentative schedule for class elections was approved by arcadia at wednesday's meeting petitions for class offices will be available monday april 10 and must be re turned by friday april 21 elec tions will be held may 8 9 and 10 arcadia associates was given the task of reviewing mass communi cations media for items of academ ic interest the committee will compile a list of magazine articles residence hall council's representation of member's interests and financial administration was scored by price hall at an rhc meeting tuesday the council passed two of eight motions advanced by price hall president robert a jablon 61 four of the motions were defeated and action on two others was postponed motions that the council request that rhc and rhc concessions committee books be opened to any residence hall member and stating that rhc would like to see a more integrated racially religious campus were carried rhc president albert meier 61 termed both actions of emphasis a move that rhc recommend abolition of the compulsory student dining plan was referred to their dining service committee for in vestigation the council tabled a move that rhc disapprove the university's policy of segregating freshmen from upperclassmen in the residence halls system the university this week joined with the city of bethlehem in a multi-stage urban renewal program under the joint plan two portions of south beth lehem will be redeveloped to allow further expan sion of the campus project one — the butler street project — will in clude the area bounded generally by adams street on the west packer avenue on the south webster street on the east and morton street on the north project two — the muschlitz street project — is bounded generally by hess street on the west ninth street on the south brodhead avenue on the east and laury street on the north project one may serve as additional parking ac tivities project two may be used for parking facil ities and fraternity re-location the site of the new by jeff stives seven troupe at 7:30 if on the other hand you hap pen to be there for the show you're liable to find yourself hissing for the villain and booing the cast in general — all encouraged by m&c fraternity parties will follow the dance and the dawn of sunday will appear all too soon park residents victimized by pre-dawn thief a furtive thief or thieves striking only on big weekends has filched more than 150 in at least five predawn raids from slumber ing residents of park house the string of thefts it was re ported began with dink hop weekend last september and has continued through house party weekend lafayette weekend be tween semesters and most re cently last sunday morning park counselor john krupnik said that university officials were notified after each theft park residents — all high-average freshmen — theorize that the party see party page 3 kappa alpha house is now within the project two area a third area enclosed by mechanic street and the reading railroad will be developed for parking facilities it is estimated the three projects will cost ap proximately 2,633,860 to complete including prop erty acquisition preparation of plans reports ap praisals redevelopment authority expenses and site preparation according to the terms of the housing act of 1949 the university may receive non-cash credits for substantial sums spent by the university for property acquisitions in the two areas these credits will be made available to the city redevelopment authority the authority which has the power of eminent domain would purchase the property demolish buildings level the land and re locate the residents if necessary when the land is prepared by the authority it would be turned back to the university at a fraction of additional cost resulting in a see 11 page 3 library closes early the ever-burning torches of learning in the library will be dimmed tomorrow as the lighting system takes a one day reprieve from its daily chore of enlighten ing the student's path for electrical repairs the building will be open until noon for classes and the return of books the stacks will be closed all day price house president scores rhc activities petitions alumni was discussed by president michael moran he said there have been movements in this area but coordination is needed moran said that at a recent alumni meeting a definite interest in what the university is doing was shown one plan is to write periodically to alumni with the idea of bringing the alumni closer to the university woodwind concert — the university's first combined con cert-art exhibit tuesday in the university center hutchinson room artists joseph mchugh and james maloney exhibited work from their past three years the chamber music group played selections from mozart darius milhaud alan hovhaness and charles ives critic weary but satisfied with m&c's long streets prize there were no pretensions that the streets of new york is a pulitzer-prize winner of the first order and anyone coming to the theater with the anticipation of see ing the delicacy of ingre or the passion of williams was sadly dissapointed yet the hil arious flavor of the play permeated the audi ence and produced hisses for the villains and cheers for the goodies although it is difficult to differentiate be tween good and not-so-good acting in the true melodrama only a spark of the essence of the play was demonstrated in the first two scenes after that the players snow balled into the production and did not falter until the early part in act four by this time the audience rather tired from hissing was see play page 7 by john kozero a weary but satisfied audience left the mustard and cheese production of streets of new york last night doing more than a competent job the play ers enacted an age-old mellerdrammer in as little time as possible which still did not prevent the audience from squirming in their seats during the last few scenes despite the length of the farce the audience seemed to thoroughly enjoy the novel production of villainy tears and tribulation performing with the gusto of nineteenth century histrionics the actors effectively caught the farcical mood of overacting that the melodrama is designed to exhibit they realized that the melodrama is almost a rat race where the best ham gets the biggest rfelehigh university 11 l •. brown and white see rhc page
