williams extempore m cgarrity lill top speakers the renowned bach aria group will present a concert of bach recitatives duets and arias at 8:15 p.m thursday in grace hall the group of five instrumental ists and four vocalists includes opera stars jan peerce tenor and eileen farrell soprano it is un der the direction of its founder famed cellist to play tonite miss may mukle known the world over as the dean of women cellists and pearl sutherland ideler piano accompanist will ap pear in a concert with two lehigh students tonight at 8:30 in the faculty lounge of the university center the recital under the sponsor ship of the university center ad visory committee and the depart ment of music will feature grant s anderson 62 clarinet and sterling l levie jr 63 oboe included in the program will be group of old forms valentini's sonata and an anonymous 18th century sonata all for cello and see 2 page 7 bach scholar william h scheide in addition to their major in struments piano cello violin flute and oboe each instrument alist will also perform on such an cient instruments as the pomona zephyr aeolus pallas and con tinue formed in 1946 by scheide to present the solo vocal-instrumental music of johann sebastian bach they have toured the u.s canada south america and europe eileen farrell whose favorite vocalist is ella fitzgerald is claimed by many experts to be the greatest singer alive although her opera interests have carried her to such meccas of music as the metro politan opera and the allentown symphony her favorite type of music is jazz polaris talk set for ies capt kenneth tebo branch of ficer of the special projects office u s navy will present a talk on the polaris missile friday at 7:30 p.m in packard lab the program is being sponsored by the student chapter of the american institute of industrial engineers william mcgarrity 62 and kenneth lill 64 took first prizes last night in the final round of the williams extempore speaking contest mcgarrity first in a field of six contestants in the upperclass divi the panel of judges consisted of dr severs dr howard j b zieg ler head of the philosophy depart ment and dr josef brozek head of the psychology department at the elimination round last monday final contestants were narrowed down to six upperclass men and six freshmen each contestant was required to speak with only the aid of notes for seven minutes on a subject selected from three in the field of current events 30 minutes before the time of the speech power line short seen for radius of 10 miles sion was awarded 100 lill also was awarded 100 for his prowess in the freshman division laurence n sepenuk 61 and robert j cochnar 61 were awarded second and third prizes respectively they won 75 and 50 in the freshman division ber tram gross won the second prize of 75 the prizes were announced by dr j burke severs head of the engish department and chairman of the williams prize committee by cal mankowski the concept of an academic community at lehigh and in higher education in general was refuted by members of the undergraduate and graduate student bodies and faculty in a discussion last night in the university center davis room russell borner 62 president of the junior class edward o smith graduate assistant in history and government and david m greene assistant professor of english participated in a panel moderated by dr carl h madden dean of the college of business administration the discussion was subtitled does this much-used phrase mean any thing should it could it what then and how borner was first to tackle the question he defined an academic com munity as a physical plant educational or otherwise to conducive to the pursuit of education and the search for knowledge he raised the question is lehigh an academic community and he answered it himself i emphatically say that it is not lehigh he said has no spark for academic achievement he pro ceeded to cite a series of experiences from his own undergraduate life including his service as a freshman counsellor to back this claim up he called attention to a lack of excitement about pre-registration for a course repetition in successive courses faculty pre-occupation with research and student apathy he also cited student-faculty relations in general which he said were poor and attributed them in part to the causes to which he al ready referred borner also placed blame for these conditions on the student who is acclimated by influences from within and from without the university to a just getting through academic program stated borner borner turned the discussion over to smith who confined his re marks to the graduate student's viewpoint the biggest problem smith saw was the isolation of the grad student in a particular field of study from other areas of academic pursuit he felt that the respective graduate programs were organized ver tically on departmental lines in addition he saw a need for a greater exchange of ideas on an see small page 7 a spectacular 4th of july fireworks-like display visible within a radius of 10 miles took place on campus saturday night as a university power line shorted during a storm lights throughout the campus flickered momentarily at about 7 p.m and more than 3,000 wrestling fans in grace hall were in dark ness for a few seconds robert w numbers superintendent of buildings and grounds at tributed the power failure to the wind storm he said that as far as can be determined the wind storm caused an overhanging tree branch to fall onto the lines numbers said there was no real danger of electrocution due to downed lines at any time the bethlehem fire department responded promptly he added roping off any areas that might have been a source of danger a few lights will have to be repaired as a result of the failure when the first short occurred some auxiliary systems kicked in as in grace hall but these were later turned off the only serious effects of the shorts numbers said took place in the president's home where power was completely off in addition wlrn was off the air from 7 until about 8:20 p.m they were back on the air in time to singers i am the original jazz buff i know just about every song and voice recorded in jazz i have a hundred or so favorite jazz albums and i play them con stantly the plucky miss farrell admits miss farrell studied voice in new york and tried out for the major bowes amateur hour but lost she then auditioned for cbs and won during the early 40's she had her own national network pro gram which was
