by 808 cochnar the board of trustees decision to drop the 41 year-old compulsory rotc program and replace it with a voluntary plan ends a debate which climaxed with last spring's student demonstrations although certain elements in cluding the brown and white spoke against the compulsory na ture of the program since 1919 it wasn't until the years after world war ii when student criticism reached new heights throughout the nation the con troversy raged in addition to groups wishing to abolish the whole program there were other groups or individuals who sought to improve the caliber of instruc tion in 1953 dr wray h congdon then dean of students said among other things that rotc instructors do not have adequate or comparable academic training as compared with other college in structors by jeff stives there never was a christian culture we are living in the post christian bra the rev malcolm boyd said wednesday in the first of his lectures in the bethlehem area speaking before a large audience in the qsbourne room of the university center boyd some times known as the missionary to the beatniks said that he felt christian words and symbols to day are meaningless as such today's youth have rejected re ligion as well as their parents he said and what often appeals to youth as being meaningful i 3 frequently banned he added having begun his lecture in this fats tix listed 1.3 per rocker a ratio of 1.3 tickets per person has been allocated for the fats domino concert to be held in grace hall on saturday feb 25 at 1:30 p.m tickets will be distributed to the social chairmen of the living groups in room 206 of the univer sity center between the 7 p.m and 11 p.m wednesday feb 15 2 in cash or check must be paid per ticket at the time of distribu tion extra tickets if any will be sold at the door or by members of the sophomore class cabinet he discussed the modern trend of soul saving terming it as dreadful god saves souls you cannot he said contrary to what you may think he added the things a priest hears most often are i've committed adultery and i don't believe in god he went on to say that these things are no longer shocking to him or most priests and that their shock value is degenerating into topics of bore dom here is a great event we've awaited 17 years ziegler to give sermon the rev dr howard j b ziegler head of the philosophy dept will be the guest speaker at the chapel serviec held in packer memorial church on sunday at 11 a.m the decision-maker will be the title of his sermon dr harvey a neville . . . announces prr change two revisions and one addition in discipline committee rules were approved by the faculty at their meeting monday dr harvey a neville vice president and provost announced today the three modifications were made in the student life group sec tion b.lc discipline of procedures regulations and requirements the changes follow an appeal made by arcadia early last october to vice president e kenneth smiley over disciplinary action taken by dean of students j d leith the first revision eliminates paragraph 3 of section b.lc which reads when the student appears before the committee on discipline for his hearing he has the privilege of bringing with him a member of the university staff of his choice as counselor and advocate the paragraph substituted in its place reads any student charged with a disciplinary offense shall have the right to a hearing and shall be so notified when the charge is presented if the student elects to appear for a hearing he has the privilege of bringing with him a university staff member of his choice as his counselor and advocate an addition was also made to paragraph six of section b.lc the ? paragraph which will remain un changed reads any student shall have the right of review of his case by the committee on disci pline provided if in the judgment of the chairman there is new evi dence to be presented that is per tinent to the issues involved mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm see editorial page two the addition to this pararaph reads in any case where disci pline has been administered to a student by the dean of students individually such student shall have the right of appeal such ap peal shall be made in writing to see student page 6 boyd proclaims tost - christian ' era peace be with you the rev malcolm boyd speaking to sro audience on life in the post-christian era gestures to make a point the visitor a chaplain at colorado state said he felt christian words and symbols today are meaningless as such unique fashion the rev mr boyd related that he honestly felt sun day school was responsible for a great deal of his and other peo ples religious bankruptcy a characteristic of our society he added that he never had any sense of connection between sun day school and life he blamed this institution as being respon sible at least in part for the lack of association which people today have with reality and religion in relation to this commented the ex-motion picture director producer hollywood is always looking for the worst of the church movies that portray the dishonest and unrealistic aspect of religion are often the best box office draws he added people today are looking for some sort of connection between them and life boyd said i never found this point of contact until i was in switzerland he said i dropped church the sec ond week i was in college he said ; .¦':.••.--• ' people are looking for escapes from reality he said but they soon run out and become lost he cited the call girl in the book breakfast at tiffany's as a lost person continuing in this theme the rev mr boyd often used literary references as examples for his ideas he quoted james baldwin's notes of a native son boris pasternak's dr zhivago and d h lawrence's lady chatterly's lover well it took 17 years and 38 games but they finally did it tony packer's basketmen in the upset of the season — any season — smashed the leopards wednes day night by a convincing two points the final score as most everybody knows by now was 60-58 dave usilton's four brought it to 59 and a foul toss by bob happ clinched the game it was a game which the scant 900 persons who saw it won't forget for a long long time the big questions are how did they do it and why did it take so long who cares the big brown actually won the team and packer might well attribute their amazing victory to one jack palfi scoring a respect able 19 points palfi's expertise saved the day for lehigh and sent its easton friends home with a loss they'll never be able to explain the basketball fans who filed into grace hall wednesday weren't too optimistic and their pessi mism was justified for the team had managed to win only two games in 12 starts even lehigh's eight-point lead at the end of the first half didn't at all convince spectators that the brown and white had a chance even this newspaper's sports editor didn't figure on a win he shouldn't be blamed who did this story was to appear in a space at the lower half of the page a photographer wasn't even sent well palfi and friends changed everything ex cept the picture the engineer's jumped off to a 12-6 lead in the first quarter by scoring on six of its first seven shots happ and jay anglada scored particularly well at the outset the lehigh defense was also strong in the open ing minutes as they again and again neutralized chip lundy the leopard scoring ace it was only the visitor's fine foul shooting per centage which kept the engineers from breaking the game wide open in the opening minutes but in the second quarter lafayette bounced back see usilton page 10 the campus has to do with thought control the educator appealed to others in his profession to realize that the underlying purpose of mili tary education despite all the talk about pre-professional motiva tion and selling the military career adds up to no more than indoctrination of the citizenry in 1960 the debate left the campus and entered the media of mass communications the luce publications which had always looked upon the american college students as a prankster a near drunkard and a ne'er-do-well although some of its editorials were unaware of the real faults of a compulsory program it should be said that they often were the subject of lengthy bull sessions in dorms and fraternities if nothing else the years after the war and up to 1959 were only a prelude to the no - holds - barred verbal battle fought on many campuses during the past two years in 1959 dartmouth professor alan brick writing in the aaup bulletin claimed that the real reason for entrenching rotc on background rotc ruling ends debate the expectation and require ment of the military of having its courses carry academic credit works a hardship on the college the number of contact hours required per week in rotc par ticularly advanced courses is ex cessive and out of proportion to the total educational program the military tendency toward rigidity and authoritarianisms too often conflicts with the demo cratic approach which aims at de veloping self-discipline the brown and white like most other college papers has been commenting on rotc for years now took the position that the protest against compulsory rotc was something more than season able and without depth this new tactic may well have been the reason why time and life became the college student's most sought-after reading matter in a february issue the b&w devoted its entire editorial col umns to the question of compul sory rotc on the university itself rests the responsibility for a program that has no place in a liberal education the editorial said see defense page 8 lehigh university brown and white bethlehem pa friday february 10 1961 faculty rewrites rules on disciplinary appeal un 6-0331 vol 72 no 27
