connor to direct information desk the class gift campaign of 1961 has broken all records by taking in more than 140,000 in pledges the contribution of 415 seniors according to richard shulman chairman of the committee the class of 1961 has pledged to con tribute more to lehigh before it has been invested than any other class in the history of lehigh will give including the benefits of in terest one hundred and thirty pledges were turned in friday the final captain's meeting of the semester the total of 415 pledges is over 75 per cent of the senior class there are still about 25 members of the class who are being soli cited for the first time the 415 pledges is more than three of the past four classes end ed up obtaining after their year long campaigns the program will continue to finish its selling to all those not previously approached following christmas vacation in the spring a follow-up cam paign will be held to make return visits to all those who have not previously joined the program the senior class had made the decision to adopt the mutual shares program in place of the traditional insurance program see 415 page 5 faculty eliminates ce 61 to ease frosh burden see new page 7 samuel i connor 49 has been named director of the office of public information the announce ment was made by dr harvey a neville vice president and provost connor who will assume his duties jan 16 succeeds charles j moravec who recently resigned to accept the post of director of institute relations at rensselaer polytechnic institute an henor graduate connor has had wide exper ience in public relations community relations pro motion and publicity including the field of radio he is currently public relations director and asso ciate director of the united fund of lehigh county while at lehigh connor helped to found wlrn for which he was director of sports and special events he gained further experience in the field of broadcasting through work with radio stations in reading and lancaster and as a news broadcaster for wgpa in bethlehem after graduating connor served as director of public service and sports for radio station west the members of the 15th arca dia failed to elect officers for the council term beginning next se mester in the caucus held last friday afternoon according to philip mezey 61 president of the present council the election was postponed until the meeting scheduled for sunday jan 8 because two of the newly elected members were not present at the caucus mezey also stated that the mem bers wanted more time to become acquainted with each other this he said would be accomplished by the next meeting new arcadia to elect jan 8 yule vespers are controversial which in every part of the country is bur densome he said brennan said that he had encountered similar problems with engineernig graphics courses in his teaching experiences at georgia tech and alabama the problem is not unique to lehigh he continued and added that as far as he knows the action taken by lehigh is the first ap see ufy page 7 in excelsis deo — lehigh glee club with the hunter college choir presented 21st annual christmas vespers sunday in packer church to a capacity audience the choirs presented as their major work johann pachelbel's magnificat in c see pacheldel page 3 elia and nina yost both gove soaring perform ances the glee club though they could have stud ied their music a little more was in fine singing form particularly in the agnus dei from regina coeli by jacob de kerle and the medieval carol marvel not joseph this reviewer was particularly impresed with the shepherds story by clarence dickinson sung by the hunter choir while the work itself was simple the choir was able to bring out its intrinsic subtleties without losing the simplicity the afternoon's biggest disappointment was pachelbel's magnificat in c though the male chorus was full-bodied during severa 1 of the choruses the hunter choir had neither strength nor depth the choirs were augmented by an in sufficient orchestra the violins were few and the brass overpowering by robert j cochnar two things should be said about sunday's christmas vespers it was imaginative and it was controversial while this reviewer is not prepared to closely analyze each part of the long long service this being christmastide and the season to be merry etc he cannot help but think that vespers could have been much better first the high points while traditional christmas music e.g o come all ye faithful good king wenceslas the first noel are all fine it was good not to hear any of them sunday benjamin britten's collection of medieval carols called a ceremony of carols sung by the hunter college choir was moving while the choir tended to be a little thin at time and the harp teemed to be out of tune soloists carolyn civil engineering 61 bane of all freshman engineers will no longer be required under the uniform freshman year program effective next september the decision was made at a faculty meet ing earlier in the month in its place freshman engineers will study economics 3 currently taken in the sopho more year in the second year a revised c e course may or may not be required de pending on a student's specialized engineer ing curriculum these modifications dean charles w brennan director of the freshman engineer ing curriculum told the brown and white will make the curriculum more flexible consideration of a change in the engin eering graphics courses has arisen period ically over the last several years brennan said there has been considerable thought given to this question by department heads he added brennan stated that the nine class hours required for the three credit hour course created too severe adjustment problems for the freshman engineer and that the result in work was rather strenuous the freshman is faced with a course no b & w until 1961 the brown and white will vacation until jan 10 1961 all notices and copy for the next issue must be submited by jan 8 the editors and staff wish all b&w readers a merry christmas and a safe return from the holidays arcadians score huac film true our action is simply one of arcadia's functions the film was shown to arcadia members on nov 28 and to the public on dec 6 the second show ing was followed by a panel discus sion in the davis room the majority of those who saw the controversial film seemed to be against its showing this is what prompted arcadia's actoin the major objections to the film stated brian bauknight arcadia's national student assn coordina tor the text of bauknight s motion reads i move that arcada send a letter to the members of the house un-american activities committee protesting the showing of the film operation abolition indicating our belief that it is misrepresent ing the facts in the san francisco demonstrations of may 1960 i further move that a copy of this letter be sent to the superintend 61 class gift breaks all records ent of the bethlehem school dis trict it was noted the letters will be as specific as possible in indicating arcadia's reasons for the action one arcadian said the film contains many distortions of fact and implied meanings it presents only some of the facts instead of all the facts it is being shown as something alleged to be true ; since it has the backing of con gressmen it is assumed to be ? arcadia voted unanimously to protest officially showing of the house un-american activities committee's film operation abo lition at its meeting sunday af ternoon letters will be sent to the mem bers side of the demonstrations and it is being shown all over the country to different groups among them school children also at the meeting arcadia decided to reopen the polls until the necessary majority of the stu dent body has voted to decide the fate of the two constitutional amendments a code of parking regulations was approved by arcadia and for warded to the student life com mittee it provides for suspensions of driving privileges of violators violators will have the right of appeal either in person or by letter a motion to request that the building and grounds department clear the
