by cal mankowski the fate of the two constitu tional amendments which failed to draw the required minimum vote of one half of the student body in three days of balloting last week will be decided by arcadia at its meeting sunday afternoon it appears likely that the solons might pass a resolution to open polls monday for balloting on the two amendments the total vote cast in the elec tion which put seven new arcad ians into office was recorded at 100,000 plus pledged to memorial gift plan 1273 57 votes short of the mini mum mark this figure includes several bal lots which do not specify a choice for or against either of the amend ments as the ballots stand a slim two thirds majority of the votes cast on the amendments favors the ad dition of three new members to arcadia these would consist of delegates from the freshman sophomore and junior classes a three-to-one majority favors changing the title of the student checkmate robert a hansen 61 snapped the above photo which took arcadia to president of the student body the president and other officers of the new arcadia will be chosen in a caucus of the 15 new arcad ians this afternoon the results arrived at while not official are considered as a gentlemen's agreement which the new arcadia formally approves when it takes offce at the beginning of the spring semester miller explained the grounds for extending balloting on the amend ments as arising from a misfunc tion in the original polling which resulted in the ballot box in christmas-saucon hall being closed during the second and part of the third day of voting if arcadia approves extension of the voting he said there will be one ballot box open in the uni versity center if sufficient votes are not received it is not certain if balloting will be extended further the christmas-saucon box re ceived 150 ballots during this elec tion whereas in previous years it handled between 300 and 400 voters miller stated lafayette rotc compulsory to investigate the lafayette college student council last tuesday decided to conduct an intensive investigation of its rotc program the action was taken after the council rejected a resolution call ing for voluntary rotc in place of the compulsory system it had been proposed that incoming freshmen be questioned whether they would participate in the rotc program if it were volun tary the results of the ill-fated ques tionnaire were to determine the future of rotc at lafayette the council in rejecting the resolution said that it lacked depth was vague in nature and not adequate to the situation instead a commission is to be establish which will thoroughly study the rotc program the study will attempt to determine the value of rotc after the findings of its com mission are published the student council will take a definite stand on the problems created by a com pulsory rotc system rabbi says integration takes time frosh leaders — newly elected freshman class offcers from left to right are robert gibbey treasurer eskil s danielson secretary philip colwell president and chuck wistar vice president dr cahn said that there are 18 mllion negroes in this country out of a population of roughly 180 million he noted after learning the number of students in attend ance at lehigh and the number of negroes enrolled that it doesn't take a mathematician to figure out that this is a very small percentage there are many people in the see high page 5 more than 100,000 has been pledged to the memorial gift pro gram so far chairman richard e shulman reported this week we expect to exceed our goal by noon today at the final captains meeting today reports will be filed and final results will be compiled a goal of 400 pledges or about 73 per cent of the class has been set shulman added if we reach our goal new records will be set we will have 30 to 50 pledges more than the class with the previously highest percentage our initial pledge will be higher than the final amount given by any previous class shulman explained the pledged amount will double or triple when invested even as a conservative estimate our ultimate gift will triple the highest gift previously given shulman said the committee is now in the process of sending cer tificates of thank you to contributors shulman explained we are very satisfied with the progress of the campaign this is the first year that a mutual shares program has been adopt ed it has replaced the traditional insurance program and may result in a much higher gift the committee chose the dreyfus fund earlier in the semester the memorial gift drive opened nov 23 and officially ended yes terday the campaign was given a big thrust forward when 90 seniors pledged the first day colwell elected frosh class president a christmas tea for all faculty and students will highlight the numerous pre-vacation activities scheduled on campus to welcome the yule season the tea will be held in the faculty lounge on tuesday from 3 to 5 p.m a section of the glee club which caroled wednesday and yester day in the university center will continue their rendering of christmas music from 5:30 to 6 this evening in the girdler gallery adjacent to the johnson dining boom the hunter college glee club joins with the lehigh glee club in the annual christmas vespers at 4 sunday in the packer memorial church a wide selection of christmas music will be featured some of which will be accompanied by congregational participation on monday a brass section of the band will play carols from 6 : 30 to 6 in the girdler gallery of the university center the annual christmas dinner avill be held on tuesday from 5 to 7 in the johnson and cort rooms in conjunction with an intercom broadcast of carols by sections of the band and glee club greene to read seasonal verse a wide range of poetry will characterize this year's christmas readings friday at 4:10 p.m in the university center faculty lounge anyone expecting the strictly devotional will be disappointed stated prof david m greene the readings encompass a wide range of british and american 20th century selections including everything from the sacred to the profane particularly t s eliot to ogden nash although patterned after last year's format the selections will be different prof james frakes stated that last year's readings were successful and the varia tion this year should offer some thing for everyone frakes and greene will read the selections phillip r colwell park house president was elected president of the class of 1964 by the freshman cabinet at a meeting last tues day charles m wistar president of dravo b-2 was selected as vice president acting secretary eskil s daniel son president of dravo a-3 re ceived unanimous support to con tinue permanently in this capacity the selection of robert b gibby president of richards 4 as treas urer will round out the four man executive board the electoral meeting was pre sided over by carl greer cyanide advisor to the cabinet selection took place in the order of presi dent vice-president secretary and treasurer defeated nominees were eligible for renomination to the subsequent posts with the exception of the secre tary three men were nominated for each office if a majority failed to appear on the first ballot the candidate with the least number of votes was eliminated and a sec ond ballot was cast at an informal gathering after the meeting greer conferred briefly with the four officers he expressed satisfaction with the work of the organization to date the next meeting of the cabinet will be on the evening of tuesday jan 10 by row cravzow and harvey bkolnick the battle for integration is over it is the mopping up pro cess in which we are involved now and it will take time declared dr judah cahn interfaith
