? christmas vespers sunday afternoon at 4 rabbi explained the top students in the secondary schools in each of the soviet republics are awarded gold medals for excellence in scholastic achievement and are automatically enrolled as undergraduates this makes up roughly 85 per cent of the student body others are awarded silver medals and are in vited to take a qualifying test to fill the remaining 15 per cent a jew is never granted a gold medal but only a silver one thus eliminating many of the bright jewish students from ever studying at the universities he added our undergraduate curricula is child's play compared to that of the soviet union said dr cahn work is extremely intense and their students come to the universities better prepared than ours it is the graduate division where american universities are far superior the relationship between professor and student is quite different in the soviet union an extreme formality typical of european universities generally see soviet page 7 ? of jesus the men will sing the motet a sacrum convivium by lodovicio viadana marvel not joseph a medieval carol featuring tenor soloists s james lewis 61 and bruce leinster 64 follows the second lesson as joseph is told of mary's con ception the third lesson the annunciation will be followed by the agnus dei from the mass regina coeli by jacob dekerle sung by the glee club highlighting the service both choirs will then combine to sing the magnificat in c by johann pachelbel professor cutler will conduct the 140 member group which will be ac companied by an orchestra of strings from hunter and brass and percussion from lehigh mrs martha north organist at cedar crest college will be the organist for the magnificat and will also perform the prelude and postlude see vespers page s the women of hunter college choir will join voices with the glee club in packer memorial church at 4 p.m sunday to present the 20th annual christmas verseprs service the program of christmas worship through music will feature the reading of seven lessons from the bible each re lated to the music following the readings will be done by members of the glee club and choir robert cutler associate professor of music dorothy r holcomb associate conductor of the hunter choir s james lewis john w gamble and dean charles w brennan opening the service with the traditional moravian candle light procession into the chapel from each of the four entrances the choirs will sing antiphonally the medieval carol nova nova chaplain raymond fuessle will then give the invo cation after the reading of the first lesson prophesying the birth vol 72 — no 21 bot gunst wins over 147 chomp un 6-0331 mnmtammmi bethlehem pa tuesday dec 13 1960
