aggressive yearling team expect strong opposition here saturday present powerful array the mustard and cheese held tryouts last wednesday night in drown hall for their next pro duction panchita a musical comedy in two acts these try outs were originally to be final but several of the competitors were so near equal that no def inite decision could be made the competitors gave short read ings and also danced a little ever since the first call the men have worked willingly and it seems as if another good show can be expected from the dram atic club members of the club selected the following men for parts pierre sandrini harry miller oliver denton bob dalgleish mrs harkins george koegler hilda harkins irving broads loulou oliver f zurn 3rd maurice groussot e w evans the selections for the remain ing characters could not be de cided upon because of the equal ability of the competitors but next week will bring forth def inite results frank baker will manage easton nine it would be difficult to fore cast the result of the swimming meet between lehigh and johns hopkins on friday but with the improvement which the brown and white tankmen have shown things look bright for a lehigh victory in all probability the re sult of the meet will rest upon 1 the relay johns hopkins was defeated saturday by rutgers with a score of 43 to 28 the lehigh team was also defeated by the new brunswick tankmen two weeks ago by the score 49-22 rutgers captured six first plac es from hopkins in their meet in view the brown and white's sweeping defeat of the new york university team last saturday in taylor pool and also taking into conisderation the improved form which the men have acquired the pros pects of returning from balti more with a win seem very l bright the brown and white team will meet johns hopkins friday night in the baltimore ahtletic club's pool saturday they wlil go to washington where they v/ill have a meet with the cath olic university returning sun day the lehigh team will have practically the same line-up as went against new york univer sity on saturday last tryouts will be held wednesday after noon to determine the men who will make the trip the plunge will be one of the events in the hopkins meet in this event either delong or shields will represent the brown and white either childs hoag land or astarita will be chosen in the dive j frank baker former home run king will manage a base ball club being organized at easton md where about 100 fans met tuesday night and de cided unanimously that the town wanted baseball and that baker should lead the team fourteen representative men of the county were selected to carry on the work of perman ent organization and application will be made for membership in the eastern shore league fred j orchestra com posed of lehigh men before the concert however the club attended a banquet which was given for them by the lehigjh alumni of york at this affair there was an attendance of about fifty thirty students and about twenty others from the hotel they then went to the ihgh school where they gave a fine performance throughout the whole program there was a j great amount of applause and encore after encore was called for the quartette was claimed the best heard in york for years and the entire club was compli mented on the fine technique which they used the program was as follows 1 smith scores winning goal the brown and white bas ketball team regained its win ning stride on wednesday night after conquering the gettys burg quintette by a solitary point this was accomplished after they emerged victorious in the most torrid court contest staged in taylor gymnasium in many seasons the score being tied five times with lehigh leading by one point and but scarcely a half of a minute to go gerhardt the tall center of the visitors caged a two-pointer from a difficult angle and this gave the gettysburg team a lead of one point when the ball was put into play again the visitors tried their hardest to hold the ball but one of their passes was intercepted by a brown-jerseyed athlete and with not more than ten seconds to go smith drib bled the ball down the floor and caged his first field goal of the | half and saved the game i!he final whistle blew almost as soon as the ball had been put into play thus putting an end to j one of the hardest fought and j spectacular games ever played ! by a lehigh quintette at the start of the game the ' lehigh men took things tooj easy and after ten minutes had had elpasde the viistors had pil w up a 11 to 3 lead after tak ing time out at this point the brown and white team began to play faster and with inorfe letermination and slowly closed up the gap nevertheless the j half ended with the gettysburg | quintette on the long end of a 20 to 15 score the second half started off with a rush and the home team j brought their score up to 18 be fore the visitors succeeded in denting the scoring column bte play began to get faster and faster and consequently rough er and lingle and springsteen were fouled in quick succession both scoring two points and tie ing the score at 22 points for the first time during the con test the lehigh team assumed the lead when wein stein fouled by emanuel caged a single ! pointer the score was again tied when gerhardt scored one point on a free toss and again at 25 points as a result of a field goal by gallagher and two fouls by bream lehigh again secured the lead on a foul by captain lingle but gerhardt obtained the ball and tossed in one of the prettiest counters of the game here smith proved himself to be the hero of the occasion when he scored the final two-pointer with but three seconds to go at the start of the game gal continued on page t column 4 arrangements for frosh dance completed tomorrow will be the last time this year that the lehigh basketball team will be seen in action saturday evening in taylor gymnasium before a large crowd the successful brown and white five will meet the maroon tossers from down the river in what is expected to be the most exciting game wit nessed here for some time two weeks ago the lafayette team met defeat on their own small court by a 33-26 score notwith standing the fact that they were leading at half time 17-15 to make the night pleasanter the frosh team beat the lafayette yearlings by the close score of 21-20 both these fast teams will be seen in action tomorrow night since defeating lafayette on their own floor the brown and white team lost to rutgers the following week 38-30 who were defeated on lehigh's floor a few weeks previous 32-21 this un expected setback at the hands of scarlet five has caused the lehigh quintette to work all the j harder to perfect their plays and basket shooting so as to make a lafayette victory an impossi bility and avenge last year's de feat last year lehigh won the first game of the series by a 27 17 score and lost the second 32-22 in the play-off lehigh came out on the short end of a 21-17 score the score itself in dicates the closeness of that fast played and hard fought game a record attendance is ex pected to be on hand when the opening whistle is blown the exact line-up of either team is at present undecided though the five men who have proved them selves worthy will step on the floor to scramble for the open ing toss-up captain lingle who in the last games has attained his old form will be supported by either either hess or c l smith either will play their usual fast and accurate game though hess is expected to start breast stroke event newark academy gymnasium team defeated the princeton freshmen 25 to 24 lynch funeral to take place today the lehigh mal-men will meet the pennsylvania state college wrestling squad in the taylor gymnasium on saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock following the freshman wrestling meet with the university of pennsyl vania frosh this will be the fourth meet for the nittany grapplers and they are yet to meet their first defeat thus far they have defeated prince ton springfield and syracuse the last two victims being com plete shut-outs the navy one of the strongest aggregations in the east was lucky to hold state to a 3-3 tie the perm state squad man for man presents a formidable line-up and one which will prove a hard obstacle for the brown and white captain xaito a japanese baseball league who died on wednesday at the hart ford conn hospital is receiv ing messages of sympathy from friends in the baseball world throughout the country some of whom attended his funeral which took place from st mary's church in new britan conn this morning mr lynch held the office of president of the national league for a period of four years and since his retirement he had be come interested in theatricals here but sustained his keen in terest in the national game the faculty volley ball team journeyed to nazareth monday evening where they were again entertained by the local y baseball league who died on wednesday at the hart ford conn hospital is receiv ing messages of sympathy from friends in the baseball world throughout the country some of whom attended his funeral which took place from st mary's church in new britan conn this morning mr lynch held the office of president of the national league for a period of four years and since his retirement he had be come interested in theatricals here but sustained his keen in terest in the national game the faculty volley ball team journeyed to nazareth monday evening where they were again entertained by the local y
