see new page 9 arcadia thursday announced that the council will begin work investigating the possibility of having lehigh send a student to africa as part of the crossroads africa program in his report at the meeting president philip mezey said that he would like to see some attempt by lehigh to send a student to africa the africa crossroads program cruiting new members it was announced that the uni versity will be host to a visiting group of young dancers from israel december 13 the students two boys and two girls will perform in the hutchinson room at 8 p.m and will spend the day visiting the campus a letter from dean parr request see solon page 3 rpi appoints moravec chief of pr division charles j moravec director of the office of public information since 1956 has been named direc tor of institute relations at rens selear polytechnic institute effec tive dec 1 the announcement was made wednesday by dr richard g fol som president of rensselaer in his new post moravec will be responsible for the coordination of public relations alumni activities institute publications the news bureau and community relations of the 136-year old institution which has an enrollment of over 4,500 students a faculty of 560 and assets of approximately 60 million moravec joined the lehigh staff in 1937 with the exception of five years of military service he has spent his entire career at le high in public information posts from 1937 to 1941 he served as an assistant in journalism under dale h gramley now president of salem college winston-salem n.c during that time student pub see moravec page 5 deadline for applications is early in december arcadians also moved to extend the deadline for arcadia election petitions form today until next nov 25 this allows additional in terested members of the student body to circulate their petitions and return them on time one rea son for the extension was the lack of candidates only nine ap plicants are now running for of fices a motion was passed to set up another student activities night early next semester the present lack of members in many activ ities was cited as the main reason for the additional attempt at re pep rally set for 7:30 bonfire parade to follow similar to present student educa tion abroad systems allows an in terested student to visit and work in africa for the summer months while his costs and expenses are considerably reduced by the pro gram's financial support costs to the visiting student are presently about 900 a motion was passed to estab lish a committee to look into the possibility of getting various uni versity groups to contribute to a fund for sending one lehigh stu dent on the program the com mittee will consider the problems of getting out applications for the position and other pertinent data by dave mcgonagle tonight will be remembered by freshmen for a long time it marks the annual pep rally and pajama parade preceding the big lafayette game it is the night to light the bonfire tradition will come to life at 7:30 as the cheerleaders conduct the band into grace hall sounds of lehigh songs and cheers will be followed by the introduction of coach red campbell master of cere monies for the night the skits depicting lehigh's treatment of lafayette will be judged and a trophy presented to the winning group finalists in the song contest have their chance to bring a similar trophy to their living group james rice president of cyanide will follow tradition as he speaks to the freshman class this period of seriousness is to be fol lowed by cheers lehigh cheers loud and strong coaches mike cooley and bill leckonby next introduce lehigh's football team the men who represent us on the field cheering and songse once more resound the alma mater will traditionally bring an end to the rally time to burn the bonfire the band leads the way to the upper field a roaring blaze supplies the light as the cheerleaders go into action we're out to let the world know who's going to win see parade page 8 team up for game despite handicaps leopards have edge ... but we are going to win jones eager beavers — lehigh larry helps frosh build their bonfire kick-off lehigh-lafayette activities bonfire to be ignited tonight on upper field prior to pajama parade across town to moravian college by jeff cox mvp trophy is inaugurated to replace tug the success of the season depends upon this one either lafayette or lehigh can have a poor regular season but when the game rolls around a win means that year will be remem bered as a good year lehigh started the year with fireworks they rolled up 118 points in their first three games won two games in which they were under dogs and generally hustled into a serious threat for the mac title but they ran into some tough ones might have been off the pace and dropped every game until now the leopards are five and three for the season so far and their most amazing feat was their upset defeat of the formidable tufts team — the team that whipped lehigh for its first loss of the season the leopards have used a lehigh castoff this season the i forma tion they use it as a power play straight up the middle and it can scare opponents but lehigh discarded it after an abortive try last year as bill jones captain of the lehigh squad puts it it won't bother us i'm sure it won't have any effect we've run it and we know it m lafayette coach jim mcconlogue plans to mix it up tomorrow he will use the i and work from the straight t it will be a varied of fense we think lehigh will be the toughest team we'll play this year the coach said you have personnel as good as rutgers and you remember what they did to us he said that lehigh was tough well coached he noted that the season would bear that out lafayette is tradition in the world's most played football rivalry in addition a large permanent trophy will be awarded to the winning player's alma mater the winners name will be engraved on this trophy and it will be dis played by the school until the next contest when it may or may not change hands the trophy will be presented to the winner after the game in an on-field ceremony the school's head coach will receive the per manent trophy on behalf of the school the presentation will be made by members of the student gov ernments of both schools arcadia voted oct 19 to un dertake the presentation of
