torrid mat encount er witnessed in taylor gymnasi um in many years the victors were no less than the aggressive cornell grapplers lords of cre ation in the mat realm for the 1923 season the visitors were called upon to exert themselves to the last ounce of strength in subdueing coach billy sheri dan's group of ambitious husk ies captain mac williams of cor nell runner up to al schwarz bach in the intercollegiates last season proved to be the decid ing factor of the meet when he pinned reynolds shoulders to the mat in the first bout of the evening the wearers of the red and white were also able to secure time decisions in the 145 and 158 pound classes giving them eleven points and the meet to match these efforts lehigh scored clean-cut victories in the 125 135 and 175 pound classes for a nine-point total the hea vy-weight bout was declared a draw by the referee after neith er man had left his feet in the prescribed ten vvinutes of wiest ling at the outset of the meet manager a j hottinger 24 announced amidst considerable applause the 17-8 victory of the lehigh yearlings over the navy plebes in the 115-pound class rey nolds found captain mac wi lliams a bit too agressive and the doughty cornell captain fin ally sent him to the mat after five minutes of sparring for a fleeting second the lehigh representative had the upper hand but mac williams called into play his superior knowledge of the game and soon reversed the tables reynolds fought gamely to avert a fall but fin ally succumbed to a standing crotch hold after nine minutes of wrestling this is the first defeat of the season for the brown and white 115-pounder and sent the chances of the cor nell light-weight to the sky for the intercollegiate title chakin opposed washburn of lehigh in the 125-pound class the two remained on their feet until seven minutes of the bout had elapsed when washburn aided by several inches superior reach took his man to the mat the lehigh man is new to the team this season and showed a world of stuff the red-jersey ed athlete found himself helpless before washburn's superior knowledge of the game and the bell alone saved chakin from what appeared to be a certain fall for lehigh captain warriner found an elusive opponent in muller of cornell and / experienced consid erable difficulty in coming to quarters with the cornell en trant superior aggressiveness finally netted the lehigh leader a favorite hold and muller re mained underneath for two min utes when warriner's over-anx iety for a fall allowed him to wiggle free and regain his feet with but thirty seconds of the bout remaining warriner again sent his opponent to the mat using a standing lever and the bell found the lehigh captain working desparately for a fall he was awarded the referee's decision by virtue of two and a half minutes time advantage and superior agressiveness rogers put up one of the gam est fights ever seen in taylor gymnasium in losing the refe ree's decision to ayau cornell's the brown and white bas ketball team was handed its second defeat of the season on saturday when the strong rutgers five came out on top of a 38-30 score the game was played in new brunswick and proved to be the fastest and hardest fought game of the season for lehigh the rut gers team was the first to score and during the first half thi<3 score was very close with neither team being able to se cure a lead of more than one or two points toward the close of the first half captain lingle broke away and started a rally which brought the score to 18 15 with lehigh leading at the half time in the second half ruteers started out by scoring two field goals before the lehigh team could get started lingle then scored a beautiful shot after a series of passes which gave the lehigh team a one point ad vantage this lead was not maintained long as the home team began a whirlwind attack which the brown and white team could not stop rutgers playing improved a great deal during the last half and at no time after the opening minutes was the score close at one time the scarlet team held a lead of 14 points but this was slowly reduced by the consistent shooting of lingle and smith the snore at the final whistle was 38 to 30 with rutgers lead ing captain lingle was the high scorer for lehigh with five field goals to his credit the de fensive work of weinstein and continued on torrid mat encount er witnessed in taylor gymnasi um in many years the victors were no less than the aggressive cornell grapplers lords of cre ation in the mat realm for the 1923 season the visitors were called upon to exert themselves to the last ounce of strength in subdueing coach billy sheri dan's group of ambitious husk ies captain mac williams of cor nell runner up to al schwarz bach in the intercollegiates last season proved to be the decid ing factor of the meet when he pinned reynolds shoulders to the mat in the first bout of the evening the wearers of the red and white were also able to secure time decisions in the 145 and 158 pound classes giving them eleven points and the meet to match these efforts lehigh scored clean-cut victories in the 125 135 and 175 pound classes for a nine-point total the hea vy-weight bout was declared a draw by the referee after neith er man had left his feet in the prescribed ten vvinutes of wiest ling at the outset of the meet manager a j hottinger 24 announced amidst considerable applause the 17-8 victory of the lehigh yearlings over the navy plebes in the 115-pound class rey nolds found captain mac wi lliams a bit too agressive and the doughty cornell captain fin ally sent him to the mat after five minutes of sparring for a fleeting second the lehigh representative had the upper hand but mac williams called into play his superior knowledge of the game and soon reversed the tables reynolds fought gamely to avert a fall but fin ally succumbed to a standing crotch hold after nine minutes of wrestling this is the first defeat of the season for the brown and white 115-pounder and sent the chances of the cor nell light-weight to the sky for the intercollegiate title chakin opposed washburn of lehigh in the 125-pound class the two remained on their feet until seven minutes of the bout had elapsed when washburn aided by several inches superior reach took his man to the mat the lehigh man is new to the team this season and showed a world of stuff the red-jersey ed athlete found himself helpless before washburn's superior knowledge of the game and the bell alone saved chakin from what appeared to be a certain fall for lehigh captain warriner found an elusive opponent in muller of cornell and / experienced consid erable difficulty in coming to quarters with the cornell en trant superior aggressiveness finally netted the lehigh leader a favorite hold and muller re mained underneath for two min utes when warriner's over-anx iety for a fall allowed him to wiggle free and regain his feet with but thirty seconds of the bout remaining warriner again sent his opponent to the mat using a standing lever and the bell found the lehigh captain working desparately for a fall he was awarded the referee's decision by virtue of two and a half minutes time advantage and superior agressiveness rogers put up one of the gam est fights ever seen in taylor gymnasium in losing the refe ree's decision to ayau cornell's the brown and white bas ketball team was handed its second defeat of the season on saturday when the strong rutgers five came out on top of a 38-30 score the game was played in new
