? ? chairman optimistic campus chest goal is 5,000 75 pet slated for student use tions donald mcanern publicity and brian frickert ugly man con test chairman thursday at 7 : 30 p.m there will be a meeting for the freshmen living group solicitors in richards house lounge upperclass 1 resi dence hall solicitors will meet at 8:30 p.m in mcclintiomarshall house fraternity solicitors will meet at sigma chi at 9:30 p.m gipson limns debt to greeks and barbarians by jeff stives today's universities are the end result of the inundation by war like tribes of barbarians into the great roman empire and the indirect influence of classical greek civilization this was the basis of dr lawrence h gipson's address at the 82nd annual founder's day exercises in packer memorial church sunday afternoon during which degrees were bestowed upon 164 graduates following brief comments on the untimely passing of pres m d whitaker and a short biographical sketch of the founder asa packer dr gipson reminisced about changes since he came here in 1924 when there were some 1,500 students at that time the research professor emeritus of history com mented lehigh was chiefly an engineering institution with no graduate school and with the arts college and the college of business adminis tration . . . mere adjuncts to engineering education today he said we have a real though small university offering a broad curriculum of studies and maintaining in all divisions the ex 2 are injured in auto crash two students were injured at 11:05 p.m saturday when their corvette went out of control at main and aurora sts skidding 118 feet before mounting a curb both the driver charles singer 63 and passenger alan welch 62 were treated at st luke's hos pital singer received cuts of the forehead right wrist and scratches of the right elbow requiring 17 stitches welch had cuts of the scalp right ear chin and scratches of the right shoulder and both legs requiring 13 stitches the accident occurred when singer lost control of the car his vehicle jumped the curb plowing through hedges sideswiping a tree then bouncing back nine feet dig ging up the lawn of hedwig how ard 110 aurora st before coming to a stop cellent standards that have won us the respect of our sister institu tions of learning dr gipson then emphasized that a university today particularly lehigh is a fellowship — a fellow ship that has the love of learning as its chief bond for the members of such a fellowship said the noted historian there are three great ob jectives the preservation of all that is best out of the accumulated knowledge of the past the trans mission of this knowledge to others through instruction in the various distinct disciplines and the expan sion and refining of this know ledge these are awesome responsi bilities in view of the unlimited horizons of potential knowledge said dr gipson but higher educa tion cannot shirk them devotion of dedicated people is necessary if we are to achieve these goals gipson pointed out lehigh university is doing its part i feel to create this sort of climate for learning following the collapse of the see to page 6 «¦. f . mm goal for campus chest this year has been set at 5,000 the drive begins monday and will last until nov 12 edward wagner chest chairman said the campaign has been often consid ered by students as a community chest on campus giving the im pression that most of the money went to bethlehem city organiza tions wagner said it is a drive by students for students sev enty-five per cent of the contribu tions are given to student organ izations wagner added allocation of funds is 40 per cent to world university service 20 per cent to the campus chest scholarship fund commonly called the refugee fund 15 per cent to university negro college and national scholarship service and fund for negro students 15 percent to bethlehem community chest-red cross and 10 per cent to muscular dystrophy fund march of dimes crippled chil ? dren heart fund cancer fund and retarded children fund last year the drive netted 85,500 wagner said that this year's goal does not represent a pessimistic attitude but that the drive started off last year with a reserve fund which has been considerably cut this year he ex pressed confidence that the goal would be surpassed wagner said the drive encomp asses almost all of the regular or ganizations so that if a student gives to the drive he need not give to the city organizations there will be no other solicita tions on campus for the rest of the year the chest advisers are chap lain raymond e fuessle dr jo seph a maurer dean preston parr and dr charles a seidle officers in addition to wagner are michael moran secretary treasurer peter tonalan solicita ? dr zettlemoyer named distinguished professor dr albert c zettlemoyer director of the national printing ink research institute has been named distinguished professor of chem istry dr harvey a neville vice president and provost announced today the appointment of prof george r jenkins as director of the in stitute of research was also announced jenkins former assistant di rector of the institute replaces dr neville the appointment is effec tive immediately zettlemoyer's distinguished service professorship goes into effect on nov 1 neville said y-gop's to air views two lehigh young republicans will have the opportunity to pre sent to the campus the reasons why richard m nixon should be elect ed to the presidency in a second wlrn special events program to day at 8:05 p.m speaking for the y-gop's will be vice president james c wil liams 61 and member thomas dieffenbach 64 neville slated that zettlemoyer's award was the second distin guished professorship made pos sible by the annual giving cam paign conducted by the alumni a similar endowment for r third distinguished professorship is one of the objectives of the al umni program for this year zettlemoyer has published over 70 articles on the results of his work as a research director and teacher he was honored in 1957 see george page 6 — b&w photo by snyder between the acts — fullback charlie lull is profiled against the sky moments before he and his colleagues threw themselves into the second half for another snyder photo and game story see page 8 players offer once-in-liffetime oresteia ' thrill by bruce snyder it is almost a once in a lifetime experience to see classical drama performed by a knowledgeable and competent group plays of an tiquity are read in first-year uni versity courses perhaps a course in world literature and then they are forgotten player's inc offered the lehigh campus an opportunity to see the greatest trilogy ever penned the oresteia " of aeschuylus the theban trilogy by sophocles is not a trilogy in the exact sense since it was not integrally planned as such in a superbly shortened version by leo brady of special note was the consummate staging by james d waring and the ex cellent choral work done by dr josephine callen probably the most renowned trainer of the voice in the field the trilogy itself is filled with the usual melange of infanticide regicide matricide and as many other cides as possible through the horrific external drama how ever aeschuylus has painted his characters consummately and has commented on various socio-politi cal themes most important of these is the setting up of the athenian court of law by the god dess pallas athene and the trans formation of the old order of fur ies to the eumenides the kindly ones the repertory group plays see five page 3
