best yet folks day tomorrow parents of upperclassmen will be university guests tomorrow at the most extensive and attractive program in parents day five-year history these were the words of charles c tminghast assistant to the di rector of development in describ ing the new format and advant ages of two separate weekends one for freshman parents one for parents of upperclassmen the reason for the change is to make the weekend more appeal ing and enjoyable for the visitors with the elimination of dining and parking problems a more varied and interesting program has been developed this year he added today's program is officially launched with the gettysburg-le high soccer game at 3 p.m today and a student concert-lecture series program this evening at 8:15 in grace hall this attraction is a production of the oresteian tril ogy which was presented a yeau ago by omnibus tomorrow's highlights include the gettysburg football game buffet luncheon and a lc-lli-fi concert in addition faculty repre sentatives will be available in each department to answer parents queries there will also be tours of the new bethlehem steel re search center fritz engineering laboratory and the library art gallery parents of freshmen will be in vited to the university nov 4 ? poetry reading today in u.c selections from beowulf will be read today at 4:10 p.m in the faculty lounge of the university center dr e wallace mcmullen assist ant english professor and stanley harrison english graduate stu dent will read selections an hour of amorous verse will be read by prof frank s hook to students and houseparty guests friday oct 21 the poetry represents an anthology of poeitq views of love both serious and frivolous scared of professionals ' y-gop debaters fall to show on an overwhelmingly republican campus two democrats faced two empty chairs in a scheduled debate over wlrn tuesday republican debaters simply failed to show democrats orlin livdr.hl and robert jablon threw aside prepared material on the democratic platform and ad-libbed responses to newsmen's questions in or der to save the wlrn special events broadcast at the 8:05 p.m air-time producers of the program roy crav zow and john cunitz said that they had struggled for 10 days to get republican representation cravzow told the brown and white that he and cunitz had received refusals from around 10 prominent republican students they seemed to be scared of livdahl and jablon ' he said no one wanted to compete with professional de baters livdahl and jablon are mem bers of dot the debate society democratic debaters were a dime a dozen cravzow added they even tried to help us out with a list of republican names jablon himself gave us three names see y-deal page 4 — b&w photo by mcl snyder solons meet — arcadian orlin livdahl and president philip mezey during wednesday's debate on the resolution to appeal a dean's office decision resolution was unanimously passed and the group asked for a special faculty meeting ? ? plans for publishing this report as an expression of arcadia's stand were also discussed consideration of the dean's ac tion was opened by a motion from orlin livdahl 61 who charged tfcfct the reprimands were a viola tion of the right to express opin ion contrary to those of the ad ministration the essence of american free dom livdahl stated is the right to express a disagreement openly one student's crime was stand ing openly next to those holding the placards he noted the pla card bearers stood at the globe theater and later near the review ing stand and did not engage in any riotous activity said livdahl since no federal state or local laws nor any specific lehigh reg ulation have been violated he noted i question the dean's pro priety in meting out these repri mands in attendance at the meeting in the university center davis room was associate dean preston parr who addressed the solons not as a representative of the dean's office but rather as a member of the fac ulty the question here is not with legalities but with proprieties parr said he recommeded establishment of a committee to examine what academic freedom means in the university community and also see likens page 8 cy george keiser i\rcadia unanimously agreed wednesday to appeal a disciplinary action by dean of students j d leith to vice president e kenneth smiley cn behalf of the students disciplined . . . and on behalf of he student body in general the council's executive committee will ap peal official reprimands given to students for participation in a placard demonstration protesting compulsory rotc last may during the beth lehem armed forces day parade the committee of solons will also request that its question be brought before the university faculty at a special meeting or at the next regular meeting of the faculty to study the various forms of student expression on basic issues arcadia established a committee which will present a report on their ideas of student expression ? state to try ail-year school by richard valenstein beginning next june pennsyl vania state university will grad uate students in three instead of the normal four years this will be accomplished by the inauguration of a four-term program of 10 weeks each to re place the old 2 semester-15 week program class periods will be lengthened from 50 to 75 minutes with a 20 minute break however see u page 9 by jeff stives pulitzer prize winning author james a michen er predicted to a group of about 125 students wed nesday a victory for sen kennedy in november with 411 electoral votes michener addressed members of the young democratic club and the campus chapter of the stu dents for kennedy and johnson at a luncheon in the hutchinson room of the university center he said that while kennedy did win the re cent television debate with vice president nixon there was no great modification of public opinion what few modifications there were however were from nixon to kennedy and it is this small minor ity of votes that will change to election he added it will take a swing of only about four per cent to win the election he said and if the debates continue this way then the election is in the bag the bucks county democratic chairman said regardless of which party got into office the nation would then be under more responsible leadership michener sees 411-vote win for sen kennedy in nov than it has been for the past eight years we are now involved in a life and death struggle with the russians he said and it is essen tial that a new type of leadership be brought for ward to aid the nation michener told how he first met kennedy he was in jakarta he said a hot and steaming tropical city in indonesia when the young congressman arrived to look over the situation for himself as michener put it there was no reason politically he added for kennedy to be there but the congressman was there to analyze the situation in indonesia as he did in countries throughout the rest of the world this kind of curiosity and interest in world re lations impressed him he said but at the time he was far from being an avid supporter of either party the author said kennedy as far as he could re member was the first democratic candidate since theodore roosevelt who had actually been in front of enemy bullets here is a man he said who has actually and heroically seen war kennedy has not had easy sledding said the author-politician indeed he's had very difficult sledding yet he has entered every election primary see press page 3 ?
