of the offense penalties inflicted vary accord a statement prepared in the office of the dean regarding the various actions of the commit tee on discipline reveals the fol lowing facts as a direct result of the final examinations six men have been brought before the committee on discipline for infraction of the university rule against cheating in written exercises the committee feels that in lay ing the facts before the under graduate body they are pursu ing the logical method of appris ing the college of certain mat ters of general interest natur ally the names of the six men will be withheld the following penalties were imposed : one man was dismiss ed for a period of one year one man for the period of one term and four men were dropped from the course in which they cheated and received no credit for their previous work in that particular course additional cases independent of the final examination exercises were pas sed upon with the following re sults one man was dropped from the course and all credit withheld for presenting a report that was not his own work and one man was dismissed from college for one term for having given false testimony to the committee on discipline there are two points that are of particular interest in the statement printed above first the faculty comittee is not quib bling in matters that are derog continuea on page 3 column 1 bill roper will resign his position as head coach of prince ton at the end of the 1924 foot ball season business pressure as in foster sanford's case is making this act necessary lafayette frosh suffer close defeat on barracks floor suffering their first defeat of the season the easton y m c a went down before the lehigh freshmen friday night on the easton floor by the score of 39 19 the game was fast through out and was characterized by rough playing on each side e h schuab and gualco starred for the lehigh five the lehigh frosh also came through with another and much more important win on satur day night when they defeated the lafayette freshmen by the close score of 21-20 the team was handicapped by the long and narrow court of the eas tonians at the end of the first half the score stood tie 8-8 the entire lehigh team play ed well and it would have been hard to pick out any individual star although the team did not measure up to its usual form saturday night they played a line game which was featured by good team work their labor work also showed a decided im provement and from all appear ances the lehigh men are in i mid-season form informal discussion held the chemical society of le high university held a very in teresting and instructive meet ing last thursday evening in the lecture room of the cnemical building mr t a lewis com bustion engineer of the bethle hem steel company spoke to the members of the society on practical combustion engi neering and illustrated his talk with slides and sketches bill roper to resign mr lewis stated that the three types of fuel now used were solid gaseous and liquid of these the solid fuel predom inates especially in this part of the country where anthracite is used because of the proximity of the fields in former times only the larger grades were utilized but now due to the increased costs of mining and the develop ment of suitable means of hand ling the smaller sizes are com ing into ever-widening use by means of slides and sketches the several types of gas-producers and the reactions undergone by the fuel in the various stages of the producers were shown the greater thermal efficiency gain ed by the use of the producer gas was graphically shown and explained mr lewis especially stressed the economic advantag es to be gained by the use of by product gases from the blast furnaces and the coke ovens and the great savings possible by their correct utilization in the manufacture of iron and steel after the talk by mr lewis an informal discussion was held and the meeting adjourned for refreshments including some of henry's famous coffee since the appearance of the report of the alumni committee on athletics of the alumni as sociation in the alumni bulletin and in these columns consider able discussion has been aroused over the question of whether we should have a graduate manager or not those who were interro gated on this question almost without exception were against the plan of creating the position of graduate manager the plan of physical education whereby the ideal development of ath letic teams to quote the alum ni bulletin was regarded as un attainable at the present time the system of intra-mural sports and contests which would be welcomed here was conceded to be impossible at the present time owing to lack of money to finance the proposition and the large space which would be re quired to conduct these inter class meets this was admitted by a prominent member of the faculty the summary of stu dent opinion is that the whole proposal is out of the question i-nd that it does not solve the ultimate purpose how can la fayette be consistently defeated in the various branches of sport or how to make lehigh's ath letic teams commensurate with the material available for such teams in our student body — ." from one alumnus we learn that the advantages which the board of directors believed could be secured by the graduate manager were two-fold first the graduate manager will have nothing else to do but to ar range schedules select coaches and take care of any business routine connected with the man agement of the various sports and in the football season es pecially for the lafayette game ; have charge of the distribution of tickets his duties would however be dictated by the ath letic committee and might even include the duties of the pres ent steering committee in the second place he would see that the men on the various varsity squads remained in college and kept up their scholastic work lie would also see that the self aid worked efficiently it is be lieved that the cost of installa tion of this system including a competent man for graduate manager and assistants would be in the neighborhood of seven ty-five hundred dollars one member of the athletic committee doubts if the cost of installation of a graduate man ager will make it worth while but he asks the question what does the graduate manager have to do with the quality of the teams the plan of getting re serve material is good though in an engineering school it would not work out as well as it is at west point most of the larger colleges and universities now have grad uate managers but whether they are a success depends upon the man holding the position and his ability to get his subordin ates to work smoothly with him at the present time the athletic committee seems to be handling the financial and managerial end without complaint on jan uary 1 1922 after settling all bills and contracts there was in the treasury of the athletic committee over twenty seven thousand dollars together with approximately twenty-five hun dred dollars worth of equipment the following year which was coach baldwin's first year here the lehigh-lafayette game was | played at easton the balance in the treasury january 1 1923 was almost twenty five thous and dollai-s besides four thous continved on page /,, column s • the university of illinois ■out ; • fits its direct result of the final examinations six men have been brought before the committee on discipline for infraction of the university rule against cheating in written exercises the committee feels that in lay ing the facts before the under graduate body they are pursu ing the logical method of appris ing the college of certain mat ters of general interest natur ally the names of the six men will be withheld the following penalties were imposed : one man was dismiss ed for a period of one year one man for the period of one term and four men were dropped from the course in which they the game was fast through out and was characterized by rough playing on each side e h schuab and gualco starred for the lehigh five the lehigh frosh also came through with another and much more important win on satur day night when they defeated the lafayette freshmen by the close score of 21-20 the team was handicapped by the long and narrow court of the eas tonians at the end of the first half the score stood tie 8-8 the entire lehigh team play ed well and it would have been hard to pick out any individual star although the team did not measure up to its usual form saturday night they played a line game which was featured by good team work their labor work also showed a decided im provement and from all appear ances the lehigh men are in i mid-season form informal discussion held the chemical society of le high university held a very in teresting and instructive meet ing last thursday evening in the lecture room of the cnemical building mr t a lewis com bustion engineer of the bethle hem steel company spoke to the members of the society on practical combustion engi neering and illustrated his talk with slides and sketches bill roper to resign mr lewis stated that the three types of fuel now used were solid gaseous and liquid of these the solid fuel predom inates especially in this part of the country where anthracite is used because of the proximity of the fields in former times only the larger grades were utilized but now due to the increased costs of mining and the develop ment of suitable means of hand ling the smaller sizes are com ing into ever-widening use by means of slides and sketches the several types of gas-producers and the reactions undergone by the fuel in the various stages of the producers were shown the greater thermal efficiency gain ed by the use of the producer gas was graphically shown and explained mr lewis especially stressed the economic advantag es to be gained by the use of by product gases from the blast furnaces and the coke ovens and the great savings possible by their correct utilization in the manufacture of iron and steel after the talk by mr lewis an informal discussion was held and the meeting adjourned for refreshments including some of henry's famous coffee since the appearance of the report of the alumni committee on athletics of the alumni as sociation in the alumni bulletin and in these columns consider able discussion has been aroused over the question of whether we should have a graduate manager or not those who were interro gated on this question almost without exception were against the plan of creating the position of graduate manager the plan of physical education whereby the ideal development of ath letic teams to quote the alum ni bulletin was regarded as un attainable at the present time the system of intra-mural sports and contests which would be welcomed here was conceded to be impossible at the present time owing to lack of money to finance the proposition and the large space which would be re quired to conduct these inter class meets this was admitted by a prominent member of the faculty the summary of stu dent opinion is that the whole proposal is out of the question i-nd that it does not solve the ultimate purpose how can la fayette be consistently defeated in the various branches of sport or how to make lehigh's ath letic teams commensurate with the material available for such teams in our student body — ." from one alumnus we learn that the advantages which the board of directors believed could be secured by the graduate manager were two-fold first the graduate manager will have nothing else to do but to ar range schedules select coaches and take care of any business routine connected with the man agement of the various sports and in the football season es pecially for the lafayette game ; have charge of the distribution of tickets his duties would however be dictated by the ath letic committee and might even include the duties of the pres ent steering committee in the second place he would see that the men on the various varsity squads remained in college and kept up their scholastic work lie would also see that the self aid worked efficiently it is be lieved that the cost of installa tion of this system including a competent man for graduate manager and assistants would be in the neighborhood of seven ty-five hundred dollars one member of the athletic committee doubts if the cost of installation of a graduate man ager will make it worth while but he asks the question what does the graduate manager have to do with the quality of the teams the plan of getting re serve material is good though in an engineering school it would not work out as well as it is at west point most of the larger colleges and universities now have grad uate managers but whether they are a success depends upon the man holding the position and his ability to get his subordin ates to work smoothly with him at the present time the athletic committee seems to be handling the financial and managerial end without complaint on jan uary 1 1922 after settling all bills and contracts there was in the treasury of the athletic committee over twenty seven thousand dollars together with approximately twenty-five hun dred dollars worth of equipment the following year which was coach baldwin's first year here the lehigh-lafayette game was | played at easton the balance in the treasury january 1 1923 was almost twenty five thous and dollai-s besides four thous continved on page /,, column s • the university of illinois ■out ; • fits its
