dance is optional semi-formal or formal ? by william ambler the two u.s senators from pennsylvania — democrat joseph 5 clark and republican hugh scott will discuss national campaign issues in a pre-election debate in grace hell oct 20 at 8 p.m their only debate of the campaign is being sponsored by moravian muhlenberg lafayette cedar crest lehigh valley foreign policy asso ciation lehigh valley league of women voters and the university members from these groups will form a seven-member panel to question the senators who will first present pointed speeches on their subject „, „,_„ „ ,„__. ,__ dr raymond s haupert pres ident of moravian college will act as moderator william quay assistant to the dean of students is chairman of the debate steering committee he said he believes that this event represents genuine university and community interest in the coming elections tickets will be apportioned to the respective organizations seats not filled at 8 p.m will be made available to the public sen clark elected in 1956 was born in philadelphia in 1901 he was graduated magaa cum laude from harvard in 1924 and received his bachelor of law degree from tthe university of pennsylvania in 1926 he was elected city controller of philadelphia in 1949 and mayor in 1951 soon after he received honorary degrees from temple ana harvard in 1956 he received the philadel phia award as well as being elected to the u s senate as a senator he strongly sup ported the civil rights bill in 1957 he also demanded the removal of secretary of state john foster dulles clark and irving m ives r n.y introduced bills which were incorporated in the final bill authorizing the new york state power authority to build a 6 mil lion project at niagara falls clark was among those senators who proposed a change in senate rules to try to curb filibustering the senator is a member of the senate banking and currency committee the district of colum bia committee and the post office ? frosh mil science cut electives replace half the annual freshman dink hop will be held next saturday in grace hall tickets are now on sale at 4.50 they include a date dinner a con cert by the cliff clefs and a dance featuring matt gillespie's orches tra the affair will begin at 6:30 p.m and last until midnight dur ing the last two hours parties will be held in the drinker and rich ards house lounges girls will be imported from cedar crest beaver and centenary colleges senator scott a modification of the military science program — cutting classroom hours and academic credit required for freshmen in half — was ap proved by the faculty at its meeting last week the revisions are effective this semester the freshman courses previously designated military science 11 and 12 have been retitled ms 13 and 14 they require one classroom hour per week and carry cne hcur of academic credit in lieu of the reductions in military science courses substitution of university taught subjects will be required in their place these courses will come from certain prescribed areas such as sci ence comprehension general psychology effective communications and political institutions and political development academic electives must receive the approval of lt col edmund r butch professor of military science the new program col butch told the brown and white will broaden the base of the military student's education it will remove an overload and make the program more attractive he said this is in line with a complete re-evaluation of the army rotc program resulting from an evolving study of ways and means to improve the courses with classroom hours cut in half he said it will be possible to hold see ms page 7 by ralph mattioli the undergraduate tuition in crease has provoked student com ment ranging from concern to in difference the undergraduate group most concerned with the 300 tuition hike is the freshman class in a survey conducted by the brown and white on reactions to the increase which will go and upperclassmen will be university guests on two separate weekends this year a departure from previous practice parents of upperclassmen will be hosted on oct 7-9 while fresh men's parents will visit on nov 5-6 the reason for the change according to the development office which is in charge of the weekends is to make the campus as well as the weekend more attractive to the 2,000 or more sets of parents who visit lehigh annually the problem of feeding more than 5,000 persons in less than two hours at grace hall was cited as one of the factors for the change parents days are designed to give parents better opportunities to meet the faculty and learn more of the university in general in the past this was not as easy to accomplish a development official said a bulletin of the activities has been sent to all the parents high lights of the schedule include the gettysburg football game to which parents will receive complimentary tickets the buffet luncheon a see ist page 3 james lester may for hp and civil service committee he was appointed to these in 1957 in january 1959 sen clark voted against tabling a civil rights bill and he voted for the senate's first change in
