b slack stephen l solomon raymond w stover edward p udicious and david w weiss the tightness of their position should compel idealists to accept that position concluded dr ever ett h emerson assistant professor of english speaking to the initiates last night on the topic politics and puritans emerson reached his conclusion after pointing out in the body of his lecture that idealism can meet disaster in its greatest triumphs politics and puritans cov ered the relationships of minor ity and majority religious and political factions in sixteenth and seventeenth century eng land emerson's history began with more than 400 people turned out wednesday evening for a lecture on the nature of time by dr adolf grunbaum selfridge professor of pure philosophy in packard auditorium under the sponsorship of the senior class and omicron delta kappa the principle aim of dr grunbaum's address was to show how profoundly the discoveries of the natural sciences do illuminate the nature of both physical and psychological time and not merely its measurement among the corollaries of this demonstration were the following claims 1 spinoza erred in maintaining that time is not a property of things but only a mode of thinking them and 2 quite apart from all its other difficulties the theological assertion that god's creation of the world was temporarily preceded by a state of nothingness loses its intelligibility distinguishing problems of time measurement from problems con cerned with the physical foundations of the qualitative features of time dr grunbaum concentrated on the physical factors determining each of the following qualitative features of time i its having the same stru cture as part or all of a straight line which is called open time or the structure of a closed line like a circle in which case it is called closed time and ii the anisotropy of time i.e the difference in structure see grunbaum page 9 heart attack fells prof ralph van arnam assistant pro fessor of mathematics and astron omy was admitted to st luke's hospital earlier this week after suffering a cardiac ailment hos pital authorities report he is doing fairly well in his absence several members of the math department have taken his classes sheridan legend as wrestler coach services for billy sheridan were held this morning at 9 a.m fol lowed by requiem mass at st anne's church called the knute rockne of wrestling sheridan died tuesday morning at 6:45 of leukemia in his 40 years as the engineers mat coach before he retired to become assistant athletic director in 1952 sheridan's witnessed a troupe of pro fessional wrestlers at an exhibition and decided to make wrestling his career after three short action-packed years of barnstorming about the country sheridan had captured scotland's 126-pound championship he see speidel page 7 climaxed his feat by tossing nine consecutive opponents in only 22 minutes the following year he added the featherweight and lightweight scottish crowns to his accomplishments averaging between eight and nine matches a week sheridan became british isles champ during this entire period of british competition he remained un defeated by the time he sailed for north america at the age of 28 he had chalked up victories in 74 open tournaments landing in oshuwa canada he continued to wrestle at a local ymca following up a newspaper advertisement for boxers to per form at a boxing club at philadelphia sheridan engaged in a short career in boxing he got his first break in america shortly thereafter in an irregular manner one day while watching the university of pennsylvania's mat team work out he entered the ring and tossed the entire team out one after another from the lightweight to the heavyweight in 1911 he heard that discussed at pbk initiation the ascension of queen elizabeth i to the english throne in 1599 at that time the church of england had been sepaarated from the ro man cathoilc church only 28 years in resignation to the board of pub lications in order that that body would come to fully understand the problems facing wlrn i sincerely hope that the board of publications after thoroughly in vestigating the problems will be all live programming by wlrn — except for several commercially sponsored programs — have now been suspended after a memeting of the board of publications tuesday at which the resignations of the station manager and program director were rejected it was decided that night sounds meet your master panora ma and five newscasts each day would remain as the only live programming of the voice of lehigh the board in a letter addressed to thomas fuld 61 station man ager of wlrn declined to accept the resignations which both he and robert cochnar 51 program direc tor tendered tuesday afternoon but said that " wlrn will sus pend all non-sponsored live broad casting the station will however hold its fall 1960 elections in the usual man ner and make its recommendations to the board of publications as it has done in the past the executive board-elect will meet with the board of publications may 17 to dis cuss possible solutions to the pres ent difficulties when asked what prompted his resignation fuld made the following statement i handed in my resignation be cause the ultimate responsibility of the radio station's success or fail ure lies with the station manager the station has failed the station members have since the end of spring vacation been un willing to cooperate fully with sta results of class elections will be announced by arcadia president philip mezey during the flagpole day ceremonies wednesday ballots from the elections which closed at 4 today will be tallied by the arcadia elections committee tuesday evening in the niversity center on the first day of the election 770 students — 146 more than last year had turned out to cast their votes for class officers neal duffy elections committee chairman predicted a total vote of 1500 comparing with last spring's total of 1269 cyanide and omicron delta kap pa tapping results will also be an nounced during the program ath letic cups and leadership awards will also be presented along with the dedication of the epitome and the passing of the senior cane a revised schedule shortening all classes by 10 minutes has again been approved by the faculty thus morning classes will end at 11:20 allowing students to attend the ceremonies at the flagpole or in packard auditorium in the event of inclement weather afternoon classes will begin at 1:40 p.m grunbaum the committee with hilip mezey 61 and alfred johanson 61 who were nominated to serve second terms john n mcgrath 62 was nomi nated to replace borner in the event that two gryphons are not accept able
