previous the holding of the olympic tryouts the fol lowing week will bring to le high some of the best wrestlers in the collegiate world besides these there will be interesting bouts between the present hold ers of titles and the ambitious challengers chem society will meet the lehigh university bas ketball team made it nine straight last saturday night when they defeated the rut gers quintet by the score of 32 21 the game was probably the faster and hardest fought of any seen at taylor gymnasium so far this season the brovtfi and white five started off well and got five points before tho rutgers team scored any foul shots by calhoun closed up the gap to two points but from then on the game was nip and tuck right to the end the rutgers team threatened several times but the strong defense of lt<s high broke up the rallies each time the first half was wonderful display of good floor work and also good shooting the defense of both teams was very good but lehigh did not allow her op ponents to score one field goal during this time the half end ed with lehigh leading 13-6 the second half started with a rush and rutgers scored two field goals before lehigh had a point however here the super ior teamwork of the brown and white team began to show itself and they gradually forged ahead to finally win by the score of 32-21 the players of both teams ' played very well but the playing ■oi menk the speedy little rut | gers forward will long be re j membered by the many who j saw the game for lehigh cap j tain lingle played his usual stellar game on the defense and in addition scored nine points smith was again the leading scorer for coach baldwin's ma chine with ten points to his credit the rest of the team played equally as well the de fensive work of springsteen weinstein and gallagher being very commendable one of the features of the game was that no one was put out of the game because of personal fouls the line-up lehigh rutgers lingle capt forward ... ney to west point and endeavor to keep their string of nine suc cessive victories intact by ad ministering a defeat to the cad ets this will probably be the hardest assignment which the team will have all year the cadets boast of a quintet which is up to the usual high calibre of west point teams the team will leave wednesday morning as the game is scheduled to start at four o'clock this will be the third game away for the brown and white team but to date they have proved themselves to be as good on other floors as on their own up to the present time the army has a string of twelve successive victories to their credit in fact they have tasted defeat only once in the past two years and that was at the hands of columbia in december al though decisively defeated by the latter which is now tied for second place in the intercol legiate league it was an early season game for both teams and the cadets had an inexperienc ed team at that time among those who have been conquered by the army since that date were two of lehigh's victims muhlenberg went down to a 32 to 18 defeat but fordham held them to a 31 to 24 score which is better than the latter did against lehigh other teams that have been defeated by the army are catholic univei*sity syracuse swarthmore manhat ten college new york univer sity mcgill and pittsburgh sev eral of which were by a close score last year the army de cisively defeated lehigh but this year a different result can be expected since both teams are boasting winning streaks the game should be fast and close when this went to press the squad had not yet been definite ly decided upon but it is likely that eight men beside the man ager and coach will make the trip it is likely that coach baldwin will start the same men as appeared at the start of the rutgers game last saturday although there was no practice during examination week the team has been practicing hard since the new term began since they realize that exclusive of i the lafayette games this is the hardest game on the schedule when the referee blows his whistle as a signal for the game to begin the following will probably be the line-up : lehigh army hess forward roosma lingle forward vichules gallagher center newman weinstein guard . . . wood springsteen guard ellinger the chemical society will hold their first meeting of the present term thursday even ing february 14th in the lec ture room of the chemical building at seven-thirty when they will hear mr t a lewis chief combustion engineer oi the behtlehem talk on prac tical combusition engineering this subject should interest everyone studying engineering as there is hardly an engineer in practice who at one time has not had to deal with problems dealing with combustion en gines the usual large attend ! ance which is present at the cijem meets is expected 1 penn state to stage show the thespian club of penn state is making plans for its coming production the maga zine cover girl this will be a student show in every sense of ! the word for the play was writ iten by a student the music was i composed by students and all the scenic effects and costumes were done by students the show declares the penn state president richards as the first speaker in a few words dr richards welcomed the convention to the university dr mccracken president of lafayette college then gave a short talk briefly comparing the engineering sta tus of the two lehigh valley in stitutions bringing forth the point that at lafayette there were two arts students to every technical while at lehigh the opposite was true mr morrell of the electrical world who spoke next created quite a laugh when he said that dr mccrack en had made it clear to him why lafayette was more successful in football than lehigh dr dedell professor of phy sics at cornell university brought greetings from that in stitution to lehigh and also from the ithaca section of the a i e e to the lehigh vamey section dave petty then spoke a few words followed by dr carl hering past president of the a i e e who after giving a brief review of the philadel phia meetings thanked the le high valley members for their hospitality the musical clubs were guests at the dinner and pleased the visitors greatly with their per formance arts and science to meet friday first home meet saturday lehigh's chances for another eastern association champion ship received a severe jolt last week when manager york an nounced that coach mahoney would be unable to finish th;e season as swimming coach jimmie as he is poplarly known to the students at lxj high has been ill all swimming season but has gamely stuck to his post as coach to the swim ming team until last week when he collapsed and is i?ow under the doctor's care manager york and captain astarita called the team to gether and put the proposition up to them and as true lehigh men they agreed to finish the season without a coach it would be two weeks before a coach could be procured and then two more weeks before he could install his system and by that time the season would be almost over it was decided that travis would coach the swim mers captain astarita the div ers and knipe the plungers all these men are well qualified for the work and with the co-opera tion of the team as a whole it is expected that lehigh will be in the running when the eastern intercollegiates are held at rut gers on march 15 the varsity will have their first home meet of the year next saturday when they swim rut gers in taylor pool pitt and princeton want dawson lineup virtually the same the freshmen basketball team scored an overwhelming victory over the nazareth hall five on saturday the game was played at nazareth and as the score indicates was very one sided the freshmen establish ed an early lead in the opening minutes of play when c e schwab and fulton dropped in two baskets apiece the home team was unable to penetrate i the strong defense set up t>y the freshmen and were only able to score three field goaif in the first half the passing and floor work of the freshmen team was fast and as a result 34 points were scored in thef first half the final score at the half time was 34 to 8 the sec ond half was somewhat slower than the first half due to the fact that several substitutes were made on the freshmen team the playing throughout the game was very clean shown by the fact that no player was i banned from the game due to ! personal fouls fulton and c e j schwab were the outstanding j players for the freshmen while i croll and kingsley starred for | the nazareth team the line-up lehigh committee after weeks of intensive work are now ready for the try-out the preliminary and final eliminations have been arranged in such a manner that every man in college has an equal chance for either the cast or chorus another feature of this year's system is that a man unsuccessful in the cast try outs may enter the chorus com petition the schedule arranged for try-outs is as follows wed feb 13 prelim danc ing chorus tryouts thurs feb 14 prelim cast tryouts fri feb 15 prelim cast tryouts wed feb 20 prelim chor us tryouts thurs feb 21 prelim chorus tryouts wed feb 27 final cast tryouts thurs feb 28 final chorus tryouts it is evident from this sched ule that many opportunities for tryouts are given the mustard and cheese club strongly urges all men to enter these competi tions this year the production will be less of a burlesque na ture than last year and therte i are parts in which only a good j speaking voice is necessary i others where a good voice is paramount thus the combina tion of a good voice for singv ing and speaking with dancing ability is not absolutely essen tial , although these qualities are together a great advantage lack of practice in stage danc ing should not be detrimental however since the steps used are simple and will be taughf during the rehearsals there are a greater number of char acter parts in this year's show requiring more real acting af fording an excellent opportuni ty for men with ability in thi line the club in a recent confer ence arranged for the scenery set the date and made gregfj progress with many of the de tails of the forthcoming produc tion the present scenery has been designed by j m piersol 24 and the plans are now in the hands of stage manager v lome the completition for as sistant stage managers is now open in full force all men whfr desire to enter this line should get in touch with valome im mediately mr william h lynn who coached the play in an excellent manner last year has been in duced to return this year to train the cast and chorus in the work necessary for a successful musical production mr lynn's great ability was well demon strated and the club is to b complimented on its success in obtaining the services of such au excellent coach max gleen 24 has written many musical scores for the show for which j m piersol is arranging dances the competi tion for assistant musical direc tor is still open and men who wish to enter this field should report immediately to m gleen at the sigma nu house ; the production this year will take place as last year at the kurtz theatre and the date finally set is april 28 the bud get of expenses allotted this year for the show is greater than cevr before insuring excellent scenery costumes and a finer production in every way the mustard and cheese club in announcing these try outs feels that there is much talent and ability available in the student body of the univer sity in having a number of try outs the play committee hopes continued on page 5
