outcasts of poker flat following their expulsion from the california mining town the out casts meet with the runaway lovers left who join them for a scene of hymn-singing in jonathan b elkus adaptation of the bret harte tale presented saturday evening in grace hall this performance marked the world premiere of this work by elkus and librettist robert gene bander by dr arthur p gardner asst prof of h i/jian in view of the production and reception of his one-act opera the outcasts of poker flat last saturday evening prof jonathan elkus has good reason to be satisfied the opera with a libretto by robert bander based upon bret harte's story is composed in a generally acces sible style which combines both traditional and modern elements in keeping with the subject of the piece there are also extensive sections in the american western idiom this reviewer was above all impressed by the expert orches tration of the score and by the extremely moving quality of many of the scenes with the exception of its opening the action of the opera moved along with impressive dramatic force though in gen eral it was the music which swept the text along with it since the libretto did not often reach an equal level of distinction in some cases difficulties arose from an inability to hear all the lines even some of the more important ones partly because of occa sional faulty balance between orchestra and singers partly because of acoustical handicaps imposed upon the audience by grace hall there are some wonderful moments in prof elkus score several of the ensemble scenes were especially effective even when the words could not be fully understood and the brief lullaby scene between piney and the duchess contains music that is exquisite on the other see cutler page 7 lehigh university
