a modification of the air science program — condensing the basic courses for freshmen and sopho mores into one semester each — was announced today by col kenneth r strauss professor of air science required designated courses selected from the areas of mathematics physical or nat ural sciences foreign languages the humanities or social studies will replace the two remain ing semesters of the compul sory program also changed was the first se mester senior air science course for which international relations 1 diplomacy will be substituted in developing this revision to the established air force rotc cur riculum col strauss explained the air force has recognized that qualification in the many and var ied areas of knowledge offered by today's educational institutions is fully as valuable to the young air force officer as is his skill in and knowledge of the traditional mili tary subjects in fact as the technology of modern air and space power advances to constantly higher levels such qualification be comes more and more import ant the colonel continued air science 12 redesigaated a.s saturday first candidates day r this years first candidate's day will be initiated with the arrival of 345 prospective freshmen tomorrow morning the high school seniors will arrive at 9:30 a.m register in the alumni memorial building and continue on guided tours of campus sights all the candidates have been of fered admission noted samuel h missimer assistant director of ad missions these first impressions of the campus are invaluable in serving the candidate in his col legiate choice we're not trying to snow them under as it were emphasized miss imer just trying to give them an honest view of the campus these are the best out of the group of fered admission these candidates were select ed from a group of 3200 appli see 345 page 3 ture of this country's musical life they have toured through out the world and participate regularly in the pablo casals festival in puerto rico the coming season will be the 30th anniversary of their first amer ican tour joseph roisman and alexander schneider on violins boris kroyt on viola and mischa schneider on cello comprise the quartet on friday evening jan 13 1961 the quartet will present the third program of the series making their second appear ance on the campus will be jean leon destine and his haitian dance company friday evening nov 4 they also ap see oresteia page 3 rushing 1960 version began monday evening with over 500 fresh men being feted by the fraternities freshmen contacted by fraternity men for six weeks preceding spring recess will be guests of honor at the evening meal being held for eight days until april 12 by the greeks each freshman wishing to be eligible for rushing submitted a list specifying a different house for each of the first three days any fresh man breaking dates for these first three days will be referred to the freshmen rushing committee with the possibility of losing rushing privileges the university has made provision for a 60-cent rebate to be paid back to the fraternities and for a 40-cent rebate for lunch before the university dining plan went into effect freshmen after receiving bids would start taking their meals at the fraternity houses now fresh men will return again to the uni versity center for the duration of the semester gordon hoare frosh presi dent when queried about the kind of problems that would be present said that the only difficulty he could foresee would be a cut in available study time he continued having rushing right after see two page 10 class office forms petitions for candidates for the 61 62 and 63 class offices are now available at the stu dent activities office candi dates must return these forms by 4 p m april 15 with at least 30 signatures a meeting of all candidates wil be held at 4 p.m april 20 in the university center arcadia unanimously approved its revised constitution at wednesday night's meeting this action fol lowed approval by the student ac tivities committee changes in wording and con struction said arcadia presi dent philip c mecey 61 make the constitution a substan tially better document than the one presented to the stu dent body last semester the student body will vote on the new constitution in special elections may 4-6 approval by two thirds of more than half of the student body is required for final acceptance action was put off until next wednesday's meeting on a proposal by jonathan e greene 62 that arcadia set up an organization to handle various civil rights move ments on campus greene head of the independent student civil rights action movement will make revisions in his proposal by the next meeting limited discussion saw dis approval by greene and several arcadians of making the civil rights group a standing com mittee of arcadia in postponing action until next week mezey called the proposal not sufficiently concrete as it xiow stands in other business aim who will retire june 30 dr harvey a neville vice-president and provost announced yesterday dean allen will continue on the faculty as professor of accounting a member of the faculty since 1930 dean allen has been in his present position since 1950 a member of the bank staff since april 1954 dr madden is now manager of the public information department and was formerly assist ant secretary previously he served three years as research associate for the bureau of population and economic research at the university of virginia a 1942 virginia graduate dr madden was awarded his master of arts degree in 1950 and his doctor of philosophy degree in economics in 1954 both from his alma mater he has also completed one year of work at harvard law school along with serving on the virginia faculty and at the virginia polytechnic institute dr madden has recently lectured at rutgers university and the business admin istration graduate school of new york university following his graduation in 1942 he served four years as a commissioned officer in the coast guard in the continental u.s and alaska in ranks from ensign to lieutenant he now holds a permanent lieutenant commander's commission in the organized reserve author of several articles and one booklet the money side of the street dr madden is a mem-j ber of phi beta kappa the amer ican economic association amer ican statistics association and the population association of amer ica scl books string dance bach groups the budapest string quartet jean leon destines haitian dance company the bach aria group and the touring company of players incorporated will be the four major attractions presented by the stu dent concerts-lectures series next year the vast repertoire of the budapest string quartet comprises the great chamber music treasures of the classic romantic and modern periods it is being continually enriched by the addition of contemporary works although the original group started in budapest in the 19205 the current group consists of four u.s citizens of european origin who settled in this country playing annually in the library of congress and giving a regular series of concerts at the
