15th n j zinc co gives 15,000 for fellowship fund clean journalism helpful the following article on the stand of the college press tak en from the christian science monitor of may 26 1923 gives college papers a decidedly high rating an encouraging sign of the times is the apparent determin ation of those who direct the policies of the journals publish ed in the colleges of the united states to maintain the highest possible standard in their news and editorial pages it is a con vincing denial of the claim that the demand of educated people even those of the younger gener ation is for sensationalism and scandal the readers of the yel low journals so called are not generally speaking those who i give serious thought to the solu tion of everyday problems in the homes and in the schools and colleges the search is for the encouragement ana promise which can be found in those newspapers and magazines which do not appeal to preju idice or seek to create and then to satisfy an inordinate desire for the forbidden and the unde sirable at a recent session of the inter-collegiate press club of indiana the delegates not only indorsed the policy of the col lege newspapers in their stand for clean journalism but de manded that the larger and more important press if it de sired the support of the schools and colleges adhere to the same high standard it was pointed out that educators are coming more and more to depend upon newspapers for use in the class rooms and that the papers available were those which ad hered strictly to clean and con structive policies it was observ ed that newspapers needed to get away from the printing of criminal and other demoralizing j news items if they expect to take their proper place in the educa tional field the students in indiana schools and colleges are not the first by any means who have declared their determination to support a clean and progressive press eastern and other colleg es throughout the country have taken their place in the line the movement is symptomatic because it indicates that awak ening noticeable in the homes everywhere as well as in those public institutions where it is the desire to inculcate the habit as well as to teach the processes cf right thinking to the neces sity of discouraging the reading and contemplation of destruc tive and suggestive matter long ago it was realized that it was the height of folly to sow the seeds of weeds and tares in a field where it is desired to pro duce wheat and corn lehigh seniors may apply for commissions discount allowed on price of book if 2 west side unitarian church modernist preached on sunday on the merits of the causes they champion before large congre gations dr straton charged that in many universities in the united states the faculties were responsible for unbelief and in fidelity among the students he twitted mr potter on his pan theism mr potter on his side speaking on i believe in god charged that a monstrous and stupendous lie had been cir culated by the fundamentalists to the effect that modernists especially unitarians do not be lieve in god dr straton said in part there is ample proof of the increase of unbelief and infi delity among evolutionists in our college faculties and their satellites among the students professor james h leuba of j bryn mawr college in his book on belief in god and immortal ity argues that religion is dying out among the educated he sent a questionnaire to 5,500 scientists asking each for a con fidential statement of religious j views and the answers disclo ed the fact that over one-half of these scientists declared that they no longer believed in a per sonal god or personal immortal ity professor leuba then sent a questionnaire to the students of nine representative colleges and universities and he found that only 15 percent of the freshmen did not believe in the cardinal doctrine of christianity but that 30 percent of the junior did not believe — double the number of unbelievers among the juniors as among the freshmen — while among the seniors he found that 40 to 4j5 percent had discarded the great doctrines of christianity in other words these statistics seem to prove that the colleges of the land with their teachings of evolution are destroying the christian faith of their stu dents mr potter said : " a stupendous thing a mon i strous thing has happened i while liberals have been asleep the thing is this that the im pression has crept abroad that liberals especially unitarians do not believed in god various j times in recent years i havte i heard people say to me : you're a unitarian oh yes you don't believe in god it seemed to i silly that i paid uttle attention to it but recently i have see that the progress of religion in the world is hampered exceed i ingly by that erroneous idea this morning therefore to give the quietus to that lie it have taken for my subject the direct affirmation i believe in god i believe in
