of a large por tion of the maroon and white's home basketball schedule in it information give out this week says the building has been un der construction for several months with the return of bill ander son veteran basketball coach and former lafayette court star following the christmas holi days intensive training has started for the squad captain doug crate of camden n j forward was in charge of prac tice previous to the vacation period owing to the illness of coach anderson one game was won from the university clfib of brooklyn and one dropped to rutgers cooper union was defeated 36-23 on january 12 and last week the maroon and white team met catholic university of washington georgetown and the navy this week's schedule includes the university of penn sylvania at philadelphia in addition to crate bob duffy of scranton center joe repa of kingston guard bob millman of trenton guard ed kearney of pittston guard stanley moore of new york city forward and al west of lakewood n j guards are veterans who have been appear ing in the lafayette line-up this season this saturday the brown and white wrestlers will grapple with the best that the u s na val academy has to offer the meet which is slated to take place in annapolis is one which is expected to bring out the best that is in each team coach bil ly sheridan has labored long and hard with his men and they are in the pink of condi tion the decisive defeat ad ministered to the princeton mat men last saturday gives a good indication of the ability of the lehigh team tryouts which have been in progress through out this week are practically completed and the team which fac.-s the navy will in all prob ability be virtually the same as last saturday the two heavy classes heavy weight and 175 pound are cap ably taken care of by levitz and burke respectivey in the 158 pound class perry may suc ceed in displacing beck it is ex pected that rogers and warrin er will maintain their places rogers in the 145 pound class and warriner in the 135 pound class poliska in the latter class is showing very good form however lang a newcomer on the squad and victor over the princeton captain last saturday should do weh in the 125 pound class perhaps the greatest ac tivity on coach sheridan's busy mats is taking place in the 115 pound class in this class rey nolds bokum campbell and paxton are all likely contend ers with reynolds the probable opponent of navy on saturday the navy team is quite strong again this year if reports are to be believed out of the team which succeeded in drowning the brown and white grapplers last year five men are back giving the middies practically a veteran team the navy cap tain timberlake is one of the veterans of last year at the na val acadamy wrestling is a compulsory civil engineers to have sectional meet it may be interesting to the readers of the brown and white to be acquainted with a few things concerning bethle hem's hill-to-hill bridge and for this purpose we have gathered a few facts relative to it plans were culminated nearly nine years ago to substitute a modern bridge in place of the old covered one there were great difficulties in the way as seen by the fact that tentative plans were started a quarter or more a century ago and to solve the innumerable problems con tigent to its construction there were many men and many minds brought to bear through out the years during 1917 when the united states got into the world war the plans to erect the hill-to-hill bridge had to be deferred be cause of the rush of war work in all industries the rise of the cost of labor materials etc the revised bridge plans were approved by the public service commission on august 19 1918 and several hearings were heid at allentown and harrisburg one of the allentown hearings was on jan ig 1919 when the question of cost allotment was discixsaed with the railroari i * resentatives it was announced on this date that the probable cost would be 2,250,000 on february 25 1920 one bid for erecting a hill-to-hill bridge was received ; this from t l eyre philadelphia whose figure was 4,871,000 this bid was rejected and later new bids cal led for to be opened at harris burg on june 30 1921 on that date the bid of rodgers & hag erty inc of new york for 2 568,000 was the lowest received and on july 25 this firm receiv ed the contract work on the building of the bridge was started in august to be completed thirty months from that time since the be ginning work has been progres sing as well as could be expect ed and it is believed that it will be completed in may or june it is planned to have a gala ded ication on the fourth of july this year credit for the success of the big bridge plan is distributed over many years and among many citizens to relate all the ramifications of the bridge movement to tell in even hurri ed detail of all the forces brought to bear on the propo sition would take a volume the lehigh courtmen added another scalp to their string wednesday evening when they romped off with the strong tem ple team to the tune of 48 to 24 the first half was a real battle both teams running neck and neck the whole time and finishing with the tally at 16 to 13 in favor of the brown and white however in the second half the visitors lost their heads and allowed the lehigh five to run up fourteen points before they scored after that there was no holding the brown and white and never once did the philadelphians threaten the outstanding player of the game was undoubtedly smith of the brown and white he was placed in the game late in the first half and before the game was over had acquired ten baskets and two fouls to his record in the play smith wasj no slouch stopping some mean passes by the philadelphians and passing the ball with un canny speed and perfection to his team-mates weinstein started the game in whirlwind form and played a fair game throughout lingle also played his usual whirlwind attack and tore through temple repeated ly with the ball gallagher while he was in the play performed nobly in running the ball through and in shooting from the field simms probably showed the best form for temple in his passing and shooting the vis itors showed excellent team work in the first half although they were rather inclined to roughness shair led the team in baskets from the field with a total of three while courtney showed excellent form the game opened fast and fu ripusly with gallagher and weinstein passing the ball hess drew the first blood of the even ing when he put in a foul gal lagher scored the continent alumni bulletin issue out this week so many european college students are obliged to work during the day that many of the universities are open only in the evening in russia nearly eighty per cent and in central europe fifty percent of the students work for a living in addition to carry ing on their studies so reports the european student relief which is aiding needy students in seventeen countries some of the students work from eight to ten hours as day laborers before beginning to think about study states the report one finds medical stu dents shovelling coal during the day sparkers plan for trip electrical engineers to visit phila delphia leaving here tuesday feb 5 the senior electrical engi neers have made plans for a trip to philadelphia during the week of february sth to bth in clusive the purpose of the trip is twofold since the men will be able to attend some of the technical sessions of the ameri can institute of electrical engi neers and to make inspection trips to electrical power plants in the vicinity of philadelphia the party plans to leave here tuesday morning february sth arriving in time to attend a technical session of the a i e e the same afternoon and in the evening a special entertainment feature at the metropolitan op era house wednesday morning will be devoted to inspection trips and in the afternoon the men will attend the dedication of the new electrical engineer ing laboratory of the university of pennsylvania in the even ing mr frank baum the well known hydro-electrical engineer is to give an illustrated lecture on electric power transmission at 220,000 volts thursday morning an inspection trip and in the afternon another techni cal session of the a i e e the party will return friday noon after having spent the morning on another inspection trip a special train is being run at this time to bethlehem for those attending the a i e e convention who desire to make a specially planned visit to the plant of the bethlehem steel co the convention will wind up with a banquet at the lehigh university commons where it is expected speeches will be made by professor h j ryan president of the a 1 e e and other men prominent in the electrical industry students of lehigh and lafayette local chapters are invited the american society of civil engineers lehigh valley sec tion will hold a meeting in the physics building on monday february 11 this is not a meet ing of the local civil engineer ing society but the students of the lehigh and lafayette local chapters of the a s c e are cordially invited to attend the affair mr p junkerfeld of mcclel lan and junkerfeld engineers and constructors of new york city will be the speaker of the evening mr junkerfeld has choosen as his subject the civil engineering features of the new power station at st louis this affords an excellent op portunity for those men inter ested in this field to meet a num ber of men who have had wide practical training in civil engi neering connections thus made may facilitate the obtaining of positions more suited to the in clinations of men who expect to take up this work after leaving college intercourse with these men might also help in the choice of the particular field of civil engineering to which the student is best adapted this is an opportunity therefore that should not be cast aside lehigh reserves to meet blair should act under drill orders the latter part of the period was devoted to balloting on the questions concerning r o t c units the consensus of opinion was taken of each of the companies on style of uniform insignia and issue of military equipment these votes will be summed up [ to represent the whole unit of | this division and the results sent ito the war department at washington how soon these conclusions will go into effect is j not known but since the same balloting is being done in all in stitutions no doubt there will be a long period before any of these recommendations are act ed upon next wednesday companies , will be instructed in further ele ments of close order drill and it is expected that quizzes will also ; be in order at this time french dutch and english signals plainly audible during tests the calls of four european stations representing three na tions were heard by the lafay ette college station here last w%ek in its competition in the american radio league recep tion contest the results of which are to be announced in the league's publication qst in february a station at nice france was heard on five different nights during the tests by the college station a station at or leans france another in the netherlands and a third at lon don england were all heard during one night of the tests as well as the nice station these stations were heard within an hour the college station station 3yo is operated by a radio club composed of more than twenty interested students and sponsored by a w parkes in structor in physics who was in the naval aviation service sparkers plan for trip electrical engineers to visit phila delphia leaving here tuesday feb 5 the senior electrical engi neers have made plans for a trip to philadelphia during the week of february sth to bth in clusive the purpose of the trip is twofold since the men will be able to attend some of the technical sessions of the ameri can institute of electrical engi neers and to make inspection trips to electrical power plants in the vicinity of philadelphia the party plans to leave here tuesday morning february sth arriving in time to attend a technical session of the a i e e the same dedication of the new electrical engineer ing laboratory of the university of pennsylvania in the even ing mr frank baum the well known hydro-electrical engineer is to give an illustrated lecture on electric power transmission at 220,000 volts thursday morning an inspection trip and in the afternon another techni cal session of the a i e e the party will return friday noon after having spent the morning on another inspection trip a special train is being run at this time to bethlehem for those attending the a i e e convention who desire to make a specially planned visit to the plant of the bethlehem steel co the convention will wind up with a banquet at the lehigh university commons where it is expected speeches will be made by professor h j ryan president of the a 1 e e and other men prominent in the electrical industry students of lehigh and lafayette local chapters are invited the american society of civil engineers lehigh valley sec tion will hold a meeting in the physics building on monday february 11 this is not a meet ing of the local civil engineer ing society but the students of the lehigh and lafayette local chapters of the a s c e are cordially invited to attend the affair mr p junkerfeld of mcclel lan and junkerfeld engineers and constructors of new york city will be the speaker of the evening mr junkerfeld has choosen as his subject the civil engineering features of the new power station at st louis this affords an excellent op portunity for those men inter ested in this field to meet a num ber of men who have had wide practical training in civil engi tion contest the results of which are to be announced in the league's publication qst in february a station at nice france was heard on five different nights during the tests by the college station a station at or leans france another in the netherlands and a third at lon don england were all heard during one night of the tests as well as the nice station these stations were heard within an hour
