hazing controversy has been brought to a most time ly end the plan which the dor mitory board of chiefs submit ted for the approval of the dean has been duly ratified as the dean intimated it would be dean mcconn in a statement given out to a member of the brown and white staff said i have looked over the new dormitory rules and have shown them to president rich ards neither the president nor i see anything to object to in them personally i feel that the dor mitory chief mr l m rich ards and the section chiefs p f campbell e l kirchner l n mandell j m robinson o h saunders jr and c e al in the extra periods and he won by referee's decision having a time advantage of slightly over two minutes beck in the 158 pound class was just saved from being thrown by the bell after he had been on top for four and a half consecutive minutes of his bout an unfortunate roll put lem boke in an advantageous posi tion which was hard to over come burke easily took the measure of pottenger and ob tained a fall over the princeton man in six minutes levitz in the unlimited class had no op position in he,mminger and threw his man in one minute soccer league met in phila raleigh lehigh high man pennsylvania league discusses many important issues at annual meeting brown and white quintet have little trouble to beat gothamites lehigh outpoints fordham five brooks elected vice-pres hess is the high scorer wine who on their own initia tive formulated these rules are entitled to much credit for an excellent piece of constructive legislation among the advantages of these rules are the following 1 the freshman regula tion traditional at lehigh are recognized and a method is pro vided for their systematic and effective enforcement in the dormitories by the elected rep resentatives of the dormitory students as a matter of fact the regulations will undoubted ly be more strictly enforced un der this systematic plan than they ever have been by the harsher but irregular methods of the past 2 the freshmen on their side aie protected by having their duties and rights defined and posted on the bulletin boards this is only fair to the freshmen 3 the penalties provided under the name constructive punishment instead of joeing mere horseplay or worse arc designed to be of real benefit either to the other students in the dormitories or to the fresh man himself or to both the punishments are probably in a way more severe than the old ones but they do not involve physical danger mental strain or personal indignity 4 most important of all the new rules provide that fresh man offences shall be reported to the elected and responsible section officer and the penalties imposed and enforced by him the working of such a plan means a training for the dormi tory students in the recognition and support of regular govern ment — in other words a train ing in good government ; where as the worst feature of the old method was that it fostered the idea and habit of a violent ir regular administration of jus tice in the spirit and method of vigilantes or lynching mobs it was intolerable that a training in such undemocratic un-am contmucd on page 3 column t a very large and enthusiastic crowd filled the basketball court of taylor gymnasium last sat urday evening to witness the lehigh varsity wrestling team decisively defeat the princeton grapplers by the score of 29 to 0 in every one of the fast bouts in this first meet of the season the members of the team came out victorious although several did so only by a narrow margin however the condition of the home team seemed to give them the advantage without excep tion and the final count showed that the victors had earned four wins by falls and three by de cisions this initial showing of the team was most encouraging to coach sheridan billy has turned out several champion ship teams for lehigh and judg ing from saturday's perform ance it would seem that this year's brown and white team is on the right road reynolds started off the vic tories by obtaining a fall over robinson of the orange and black team in two minutes and thirty-seven seconds this was a fast bout and was only won by reynolds quickness lang a newcomer to the wrestling squad handed a surprise by get ting a referee's decision over owen captain of the princeton team both gave all the fight that was in them but lang was able to get a few minutes ad vantage over the princetonian captain warriner of the brown and white won his bout by pin ning the shoulders of lewis to the mat in five minutes he was aggressive from the start when the probable outcome was plain ly seen by far the most exciting bout of the evening was between rogers lehigh and buttry princeton both men are wrest lers of no mean ability and they were so evenly matched that at the end of the ten minute per iod referee post declared the bout a draw following the next event rogers and buttry again battled roger's superior phy sical skill began to show itself frosh basketball five beats wyoming sem frosh grapplers defeat blair academy due to the inclemency of the weather during the months of january and february major patch has formulated a winter schedule to take the place of out door drill along the following lines a company reports to packer hall b company to the chemistry lecture room c com pany to the physics lecture room and d company to christ mas hall each wednesday at 4 p m here the companies are brok en up into small groups and giv en instruction by cadet officers and non-commissioned officers under the supervision of the commissioned officers of the military department the ob ject of the plan is twofold the subjects in which instruction is given are those that will facili tate getting the unit in good shape for the spring drill and more time can be used in polish ing off the rough spots due to the winters we encoun ter here we have a great deal less drill than do the southern colleges who can remain out of doors nearly the entire winter with this in view the military department believes that tnis handicap can be overcome to the same extent by the above meth od this of course will give le high a better chance of making distinguished again when the war department board inspects the unit next spring another object of the military department in instituting the group system is to give the cad et officers and non-commission ed officers the responsibility of instructing their respective groups this will bring into play what initiative they possess and will foster leadership which is so essential to them whether they remain in the military ser vice or take up civil pursuits here they will have a chance to handle men which they will be compelled to do when they leave college and take up their profes sional duties the following is the schedule for the next four drill periods and in case the weather is still too bad to get out of doors it will be lengthened jan 23 — close order drill feb 13 — close order drill feb 20 — extended order drill and combat formations feb 27 — parades and re views have you voted on box peace plan where will the lehigh-lafay ette football game the classic of the lehigh valley be played next fall in philadelphia at the new york polo grounds in easton or on taylor field the whole matter of decision is up to the lafayette authorities as was previously explained in these columns several groups including the faculty and the trustees have taken action on the matter the lafayette faculty at their regular monthly meeting held january bth adopted a res olution opposing a transfer of the game to philadelphia and officially infornied the board of trustees of this action on jan uary 17th the board of trus tees met in philadelphia the papers next morning carried the statement that they adopted a resolution providing for the transfer of the game and ap proving the game to be played at franklin field taylor sta dium and the polo grounds were suggested but were not considered the evening papers of the same date claimed that the selection of the field was still undicided quoting dr j h mccracken president of lafay ette as saying : the report that the game would be played in the franklin field stadium philadelphia was erroneous the board of trustees of la fayette at a meeting in philadel phia decided to recommend to the faculty committee on ath letics the game be played in philadelphia but no definite de cision or action has been taken it is the hope of the trustees the game be played in philadel phia for it would materially help both colleges financially lehigh has refused to play ihe game on march field while it has suggested the game be played at taylor stadium or in philadelphia the trustees and faculty will consider the matter and make a definite decision not only are the students and faculty up in arms but the townspeople also are condemn ing the action of the board of trustees in taking the game out of the lehigh valley they state that they are not getting a square deal since they will not be able to see the maroon team in a single important game un less they follow the team to a foreign field hobart muhlenberg and al fred university are the three continued on i'vuc 2 column 1 students self-aid movie was poorly attended the pennsylvania state soc cer league held its annual meet ing last friday night at the un iversity of pennsylvania the work of the meeting consisted in electing mr zehing of the university of pennsylvania act ing president of the league un til the new pennsylvania mana ger is named mr brooks of lehigh vice-president and mr spangler of swarthmore secre tary and treasurer it was also decided that there would be two forty-five minute periods in each game and in case of a tie two extra periods of five min utes will be played at the end of which time the score would be made official a regulation banner of appropriate size of blue silk with gold letters and white shading is to be given in addition to the trophy to the team winning the championship each year the banner for le high is being made at present the goal posts used at present are of iron piping and it was decided that they must be taken down and wooden ones put in their place due to only four colleges be ing in the league it was decided to see if any colleges would like to enter swarthmore — nov 15 away lafayette — dec 18 away new club at moravian chapel topics for week up to the present date only a very few of the ballots regarding the bok peace award have been turned in to the brown and white for the benefit of those who have not as yet turned in their vote the ballot will be printed again in this issue of the paper it is earnestly requested that all students make an early return as the committee in charge of awarding the prize is desirious of making a state ment as to the number of votes cast for and against the plan as soon as possible first defeat of seminary boys by yearlings in six years the freshman basket ball team defeated wyoming semi nary in an exceedingly fast game last saturday by the nar row margin of five points final score being 38 to 33 this vic tory is gratifying to the mem bers of the team and coach bart as it is the first victory over the wyoming quintet in six years the game was played on the seminary floor seven members of the freshman team made the trip starting with a burst of speed and teamwork the brown and white representatives kept a few points ahead of their op ponet at the end of the first half the score was 14 to 12 in favor of lehigh the second half was much the same as the first with wyoming trailing the frosh by only a few points the teamwork and play of the team was very good on a whole coach p>art of the freshman team has been giving instruc tion to them every day from five until six about twenty-five men continued on t'ttye s column i the subject for next week's chapel topic is the anti-theistic theory dealing with agnostic ism pentheism and kindred ob jections to belief in a personal god in a word a discussion of athesism and atheists the mu sical program will be as usual tuesday the chapel exercises are to be conducted by profes sor w a lambert of the eng lish department an inferology club has been formed at moravian col lege bethlehem pa the club is not a fraternity but is an op en organization that is based upon the co-operation plan with officers and a board of directors the purpose of the club is to promote a better college spirit among colleges and universities afford social entertainments for students in the colleges and universities and study inferol ogy similar clubs at yale brown pnd bowdoin are being contem plated last saturday in a meet which was not decided until the last two events and which was replete with thrills lehigh's mermen lost to rmy by the score of 36 to 26 duerr of the army was high scorer of the meet capturing first places in both the 50 and 100 yard dashes and also swim mining on the relay team ra leigh of lehigh took next hon ors by getting second in both the 50 yard backstroke and the 50 yard dash child displaying the best form of his collegiate oareer won the dive this being the only first place taken by lehigh the first event was the relay which was won by army houze nosing out travis by inches ra leigh swimming first for lehigh gave freeman a slight lead which he lost by two yards ar nold swimming in his first va rsity meet made a plucky strug gle but could not overcome this lead although houze had a two yard lead on travis the lehigh sprint king managed to cut down the lead but the race was too short and he lost by inches duerr won both the 50 and the 100 but only after being pressed very closely in both events the 50 yard backstroke was the best race of the meet good man of army getting the decis ion over raleigh in what looked to be a dead heat pickle lehigh's new breast stroke man showed up well by finishing second to elliott of army in the fast time of 1.20 the 220 was won by lord in the slow time of 2:50.4 reed of lehigh who finished second was ill and swam against the wishes of coach mahoney but he show ed the stuff lehigh men are made of by his game fight coach mahoney is well satis fied with the showing of his green team and is quite optimis tic regarding lehigh's chances for a championship team in the eastern intercollegiate associa tion lehigh's next meet will not be until february 16 when they will meet rutgers last year's champions continued on pane b column t notice students grave presented by the students self aid at the grand opera house last friday and saturday proved very interest ing although the attendance un fortunately at all performances was very poor the picture depicted life cus toms and types of people living along the west coast of africa known as the gold coast and was both educational and enter taining at the evening perform ance the lehigh six gave sever al selections and fred dorton and bob dagleish sang several songs it was rather unfortunate that the affair was a financial loss to the students self aid and it is clear that the support of the stu dent body was lacking there not being over one hundred students at the largest attendance of the performance yearlings have three falls and one decision to their credit the freshman wrestling team went to blairstown on saturday where they defeated the blair academy wrestlers 18 to 8 the team displayed fine form and promise to shape into a very ag gressive team the meet was a fast one with four falls and two decisions being obtained the brown and white freshmen ir ceived three of these falls and one decision reed the lehigh 115 pound man threw dalling of blair in one minute and forty five seconds and kent won his bout by the same route in less than a minute in the 135 pound class macnamara of blair re ceived the decision over lewis after a hard struggle this was one of the most evenly matched bouts long in the 145 pound class did not have much difficul ty with gritting of blair and threw his man in six minutes keller was not so fortunate and a bad roll gave fulboam a chance to pin his shoulders to the mat in a minute in the last bout evans received a decision over colson after seven minutes of sever wrestling the undefeated lehigh bas ketball team scored its seventh straight win by defeating the fordham five in a hard and fast game in taylor gymnasium sat urday afternoon by a 36 to 26 score at the end of the first half lehigh was leading by a 23 to 14 score at no time during the game did the fordham team seriously threaten the lehigh lead which during the second half was always eight or ten points smith started the scoring by caging the ball from the field soon after the opening whistle the gothamites tied the score a few minutes later when zaksze wski made two foul tries good lingle followed with a field goal and thereafter the new yorkers were unable to tie the score at any time during the remainder of the game the second half saw a faster game than the pre vious period fordham lead by their captain cavanaugh and center zaksewski attempted to stage a comeback but were un successful this was due to the close defense and accurate shooting of the whole lehigh quintet hess who was substi tuted for smith in the early part of the game did himself credit by scoring five goals from the field and two from the foul line gallagher lead in the foul shoot jing making four tries good from the fifteen foot mark cavan augh starred for the visitors scoring boys by yearlings in six years the freshman basket ball team defeated wyoming semi nary in an exceedingly fast game last saturday by the nar row margin of five points final score being 38 to 33 this vic tory is gratifying to the mem bers of the team and coach bart as it is the first victory over the wyoming quintet in six years the game was played on the seminary floor seven members of the freshman team made the trip starting with a burst of speed and teamwork the brown and white representatives kept a few points ahead of their op ponet at the end of the first half the score was 14 to 12 in favor of lehigh the second half was much the same as the first with wyoming trailing the frosh by only a few points the teamwork and play of the team was very good on a whole coach p>art of the the last two events and which was replete with thrills lehigh's mermen lost to rmy by the score of 36 to 26 duerr of the army was high scorer of the meet capturing first places in both the 50 and 100 yard dashes and also swim mining on the relay team ra leigh of lehigh took next hon ors by getting second in both the 50 yard backstroke and the 50 yard dash child displaying the best form of his collegiate oareer won the dive this being the only first place taken by lehigh the first event was the relay which was won by army houze nosing out travis by inches ra leigh swimming first for lehigh gave freeman a slight lead which he lost by two yards ar nold swimming in his first va rsity meet made a plucky strug gle but could not overcome this lead although houze had a two yard lead on travis the lehigh sprint king managed to cut down the lead but the race was too short and he lost by inches duerr won both the 50 and the 100 but only after being pressed very closely in both events the 50 yard backstroke was the best race of the meet good man of army getting the decis ion over raleigh in what looked to be a dead heat pickle lehigh's new breast stroke man showed up well by finishing second to elliott of army in the fast time of 1.20 the 220 was won by lord in the slow time of 2:50.4 reed of lehigh who finished second was ill and swam against the wishes of coach mahoney but he show ed the stuff lehigh men are made of by his game fight coach mahoney is well satis fied with the showing of his green team and is quite optimis tic regarding lehigh's chances for a championship went to blairstown on saturday where they defeated the blair academy wrestlers 18 to 8 the team displayed fine form and promise to shape into a very ag gressive team the meet was a fast one with four falls and two decisions being obtained the brown and white freshmen ir ceived three of these falls and one decision reed the lehigh 115 pound man threw dalling of blair in one minute and forty five seconds and kent won his bout by the same route in less than a minute in the 135 pound class macnamara of blair re ceived the decision over lewis after a hard struggle this was one of the most evenly matched bouts long in the 145 pound class did not have much difficul ty with gritting of blair and threw his man in six minutes keller was not so fortunate and a bad roll gave fulboam a chance to pin his shoulders to the mat in a minute in the last bout evans received a decision over colson after seven minutes of sever wrestling the undefeated lehigh bas ketball team scored its seventh straight win by defeating the fordham five in a hard and fast game in taylor gymnasium sat urday afternoon by a 36 to 26 score at the end of the first half lehigh was leading by a 23 to 14 score at no time during the game did the fordham team seriously threaten the lehigh lead which during the second half was always eight or ten points smith started the scoring by caging the ball from the field soon after the opening whistle the gothamites tied the score a few minutes later when zaksze wski made two foul tries good lingle followed with a field goal and thereafter the new yorkers were unable to tie the score at any time during the remainder of the game the second half saw a faster game than the pre vious period fordham lead by their captain cavanaugh and center zaksewski attempted to stage a comeback but were un successful this was due to the close defense and accurate shooting of the whole lehigh quintet hess who was substi tuted for smith in the early part of the game did himself credit by scoring five goals from the field and two from the foul line gallagher lead in the foul shoot jing making four tries good from the fifteen foot mark cavan augh starred for the visitors scoring
