preparations for lehigh's evalua tion for re-accreditation by the middle states association are near ing completion dr wray h cong don special assistant to the presi dent told the brown and white a 555-page preparatory re port for the evaluation sched uled to begin feb 14 1960 is now being proofread dean congdon who is supervising this work pointed out that accredi tation is becoming increasingly im portant to students and to schools the government has begun to take it into consideration for loans under the g.i bill and from the national science foundation dr congdon says accreditation has served to upgrade education schools have been forced to become accrediated in order to obtain the better students benefits for the stu dents result from this competition for the top student accreditation has been of special value in secondary schools secondary students are helped when their rural schools see dean page 4 cook emphasized the educa tion of pledges noting that the pledges are more prone to scho lastic difficulty and the in fluence of the program will be felt by the pledge early in his fraternity career this exposure to scholarship facilities is ex pected to encourage further study as a brother the six meetings this semester will range from scholastic attitude to spotting scholastic problems tentative speakers include associate dean of students c b campbell and assistant professor of psychol ogy theodore millon william horton 60 president of ifc said the program was a trial other universities have found this system very popular and beneficial he commented dean of students j d leith said the program is a fine tack for ifc in recognition of the central theme of the university — something which has been lacking at times he added that he would help ifc all he could in their general pro gram ifc also decided to severely restrict frosh fraternizing with see ifc page 3 elgart and lawrence to play at houseparty con an t presents concert in cleaver series oct 6 robert conant gifted young american harpsichordist will present a recital on oct 6 in the osbourne room of the universiyt center he will appear under the auspices of the lehigh cleaver concert series and the arts program of the association of american colleges conant has been acclaimed for his highly colorful and uniquely diver sified programs which have been presented with continued excellence a yale graduate he has studied piano with sascha gorodnitzki and harpsichord with ralph kirkpatrick "« has nprfnv mo h fnv +^ o armo forces network and worked with the american bach society the early music foundation the collegium musicum the collegiate chorale the masterwork chorus the dessoff choirs and the chamber music circle in 1957 he gave a highly success ful carnegie recital hall concert the harpsichord part of carter's sonata which he recorded for columbia records is currently avail able recently he has toured the major european capitals and served as musical director of the festival of baroque music at schroon lake n.y music by larry elgart and elliot lawrence will be featured attraction at the fall houseparty dance oct 30 elgart's band will play on the lower level of grace hall for the friday night formal while law rence provides the dancing beat upstairs elgart's 16-piece ensemble fea tures the maestro on saxophone and is billed as the first choice of dancing america carol sloan will be handling the vocals lawrence's band will be making another repeat performance at houseparty ed sider 60 publicity chair man of the event said the bands were chosen because they were very danceable larry elgart is the originator of the elgart sound popularized by him and his brother les during the early fifties he is responsible for not only the music but for recording techniques as well as bandstand acoustics he has a background of wide ex perience playing in dance bands in cluding those of charlie spivak woody herman and tommy dor sey elliot lawrence had an early start in his career with high school experience in arranging and composing his first band was formed during his high school days lawrence established an excellent reputation for his band with a wide variety of bookings across the na tion and on network radio broad casts see strauch page 5 middlemen in both society and liter ature setting the stage for later elaboration on emerson and his dealing with evolution it was the task of literary mid dlemen he asserts to interpret new and revolutionary ideas for a greatly enlarged reading public and fre quently in making an accommenda tion between new ideas and tradi tional concepts he was able to ease the emotional and intellectual pain for thousands of serious-minded people strauch continued to say these middldemen do not rep resent an intellectual type so much as a social and educational function . . ." while these middlemen were not of necessity great originators of ideas they were often great orig inators in their presentation time this year because last year's report on the drive was not completed until too late committee chairman henry sedgwick 60 explained this week sedgwick noted that he was hesitant to start without the 1958 report because i'm new to this and unsure of how to procede without the benefit of past ex perience the campaign usually starts at the beginning of october and runs for approximately a week it usually coincides with bethlehem's united fund drive which has been in definitely postponed due to the steel strike october 20 to 24 will be the dates of the three-week late lehigh cam paign the fraternity system was unanimously passed monday at the first inter fraternity council meeting in a report submitted by the scholarship committee chairman michael cook said the emphasis would be on the pledges six meet ings with the members of the faculty connected with scholarship im provement will compose the program the object of the program is to acquaint brothers and pledges with the scholarship improvement facilities of the university it is hoped that through these facilities a better scholastic attitude will be developed within fraternities said cook the committee plans to have illegally this week is certainly try ing dr josef brozek head of the psychology department has found himself in the middle of a city-university battle over the police department's right to ticket parked cars on packer aye — and wishes he could forget the entire affair the confusion started early tues day morning when 35 lehigh stu dents parked their cars on packer aye near webster st local police claim they sent a patrolman to the area on sunday night to post no parking — church parking only signs several of the students tagged question the time the signs were placed and claim there were no signs in sight at eight in the morning to make matters worse few of the signs had authorization on them brozek says he saw none police say some did have the proper authorization authorization re fers to the fact that all signs re stricting parking are required to indicate bethlehem police depart ment or at least bpd the actual tagging of the cars occurred early tuesday morn ing when
