the end of the meeting invitation is not limited to civil engineers and all students of the university are invited to at tend a meet that promises to be one of the best of the year office notes marriage is a foe to science women members of the ameri can chemical society declare and chemistry as a profession they say cannot compete suc cessfully with the allurements of a home miss m v dover who during the war served the gov ernment as an expert in ex plosives and is now an assistant professor of chemistry at the university of missouri thinks that the field is not as wide for women as for men men may marry and con tinue as chemists she says but the woman who weds must abandon chemistry if she is to maintain her home successfully in the field of industrial and en gineering chemistry of women chemists are not as suitable as men but there are exceptions to this it is in the field of research and in the health laboratories that the work of the woman chemist lies but here too if she wishes to go far she will find that years of study and endeav or are needed and the making of a home will interfere w c klein a senior in the arts and science department has inaugurated a very novel psychological test for the pur pose of determining the poetic power of the students of lehigh university the test is in three parts the first part being verses from well known poems in which extra words are given at the end of each line only one of these words is the right one and the student must pick out that one word the second part consists of verses from poems in which words have been left out and the student must put in the words which he thinks will rhyme with the rest of the verse the third part consists of verses from poems in which the words and sentences are mixed changed around and put out of place this is the hardest part of the test for it requires true poetic ability to be able to pick out the words and sentences and put them in their proper place this test was given to the b a psychology class under the direction of w c klein and professor hughes and the re sults were quite good at a meeting of the athletic committee held tuesday after noon in prof reiter's office sev eral important matters pertain ing to lehigh's football schedule of next year were decided lehigh will meet holy cross in woscester on the bth of no vember it was decided to leave the selection of a field for the lehigh-lafayette game up to the lafayette authorities but with the understanding that the game will not be played at eas ton whether the lehigh-lafayet te game in 1924 will be played in taylor stadum or on frank lin field is now entirely up to the lafayette authorities the lehigh athletic committee is strongly opposed to playing the game on march field a letter to graduate manager reeves ex plained that no matter how safe you may make stands — they are like a bad reputation it will be difficult to live the sit uation down the committee voted unanimously against play ing the game at easton next year the reasons given were first in regard to the safety of life and limb which no doubt would hurt the attendance greatly and second on account of the lack of seating capacity for our alumni and students the committee suggested play ing the game either on taylor stadium or on some neutral field preferably franklin field the university of pennsylvania authorities are very anxious to have the game staged on their field as such attraction as the lehigh-lafayette game would doubtless attract a large crowd it is estimated that more than fifty thousand would attend a much larger attendance than could be handled in taylor stadium at this meeting it was decid ed to substitute holy cross for the date originally set aside for the bucknell game on the foot ball schedule for the season of 1924 this action was taken af ter bucknell notified the beth lehem authorities that due to schedule circumstances the team would be unable to come here next season but intimitat ed that relations would be re sumed the following year car negie tech made a similar reply in meeting holy cross lehigh will meet one of the strongest of the new england elevens an additional feature is that this game will serve as dedication to the new stadium at woscester which can accommodate thirty thousand spectators the guar antee is most flattering together with the privilege of taking fif ty percent of the net gate re ceipts syracuse university invited lehigh to join its schedule but due to the fact that this was only for the 24 season it was deemed advisable to accept the holy cross date this game will be played away making a total of three games away and five home providing the ' lehigh lafayette game is played at philadelphia a telegram was received from the southern methodist univer sity of dalles texas who were willing to accept any open date on lehigh's schedule as the trip would require five days this college wanted a guarantee of 5680 and an option of fifty per cent of the gate receipts the offer however was not accepted the official receipts of the le high-lafayette game totaled over 44,000 and the expenses were 2000 lafayette received one-half of the net reqeipts statistics obtained from the dean's office show a total of 1 027 failures for the past five week period as compared with 902 failures for the preceding period of six weeks by a fail ure is meant the number of sub jects in which the students fail ed and not the number of stu dents who failed in the recent intelligence test given to the freshmen class at dartmouth a v wingram of leonia n j was the highest rating man according to an an nouncement made recently by associate dean r w husband who conducted the tests although these tests which are similar to the army war tests do not affect a student s standing they are kept in the personal record of each man and are used by the vocational di rector the next nine in order of rank were g s corliss of winches ter mass h l thomas of quincy marriage is a foe to science women members of the ameri can chemical society declare and chemistry as a profession they say cannot compete suc cessfully with the allurements of a home miss m v dover who during the war served the gov ernment as an expert in ex plosives and is now an assistant professor of chemistry at the university of missouri thinks that the field is not as wide for women as for men men may marry and con tinue as chemists she says but the woman who weds must abandon chemistry if she is to maintain her home successfully in the field of industrial and en gineering chemistry of women chemists are not as suitable as men but there are exceptions to this it is in the field of research and in the health laboratories that the work of the woman chemist lies but here too if she wishes to go far she will find that years of study and endeav or are needed and the making of a home will interfere w c klein a senior in the arts and science department has inaugurated a very novel psychological test for the pur pose of determining the poetic power of the students of lehigh university the test is in three parts the first part being verses from well known poems in which extra words are given at the end of each line only one of these words is the right one and the student must pick out that one word the second part consists of verses from poems in which words have been left out and the student must put in the words which he thinks will rhyme with the rest of the verse the third part consists of verses from poems in which the words and sentences are mixed changed around and put out of place this is the hardest part of the test for it requires true poetic ability to be able to pick out the words and sentences and put them in their proper place this test was given to the b a psychology class under the direction of w c klein and professor hughes and the re sults were quite good at a meeting of the athletic committee held tuesday after noon in prof reiter's office sev eral important matters pertain ing to lehigh's football schedule of next year were decided lehigh will meet holy cross in woscester on the bth of no vember it was decided to leave the selection of a field for the lehigh-lafayette game up to the lafayette authorities but with the understanding that the game will not be played at eas ton whether the lehigh-lafayet te game in 1924 will be played in taylor stadum or on frank lin field is now entirely up to the lafayette authorities the lehigh athletic committee is strongly opposed to playing the game on march field a letter to graduate manager reeves ex plained that no matter how safe you may make stands — they are like a bad reputation it will be difficult to live the sit uation down the committee voted unanimously against play ing the game at easton next year the reasons given were first in regard to the safety of life and limb which no doubt would hurt the attendance greatly and second on account of the lack of seating capacity for our alumni and students the committee suggested play ing the game either on taylor stadium or on some neutral field preferably franklin field the university of pennsylvania authorities are very anxious to have the game staged on their field as such attraction as the lehigh-lafayette game would doubtless attract a large crowd it is estimated that more than fifty thousand would attend a much larger attendance than could be handled in taylor stadium at this meeting it was decid ed to substitute holy cross for the date originally set aside for the bucknell game on the foot ball schedule for the season of 1924 this action was taken af ter bucknell notified the beth lehem authorities that due to schedule circumstances the team would be unable to come here next season but intimitat ed that relations would be re sumed the following year car negie tech made a similar reply in meeting holy cross lehigh will meet one of the strongest of the new england elevens an additional feature is that this game will serve as dedication to the new stadium at woscester which can accommodate thirty thousand spectators the guar antee is most flattering together with the privilege of taking fif ty percent of the net gate re ceipts syracuse university invited lehigh to join its schedule but due to the fact that this was only for the 24 season it was deemed advisable to accept the holy cross date this game will be played away making a total of three games away and five home providing the ' lehigh lafayette game is played at philadelphia a telegram was received from the southern methodist univer sity of dalles texas who were willing to accept any open date on lehigh's schedule as the trip would require five days this college wanted a guarantee of 5680 and an option of fifty per cent of the gate receipts the offer however was not accepted the official receipts of the le high-lafayette game totaled over 44,000 and the expenses were 2000 lafayette received one-half of the net reqeipts statistics obtained from the dean's office show a total of 1 027 failures for the past five week period as compared with 902 failures for the preceding period of six weeks by a fail ure is meant the number of sub jects in which the students fail ed and not the number of stu dents who failed in the recent intelligence test given to the freshmen class at dartmouth a v wingram of leonia n j was the highest rating man according to an an nouncement made recently by associate dean r w husband who conducted the tests although these tests which are similar to the army war tests do not affect a student s standing they are kept in the personal record of each man and are used by the vocational di rector the next nine in order of rank were g s corliss of winches ter mass h l thomas of quincy in your classrooms it would be a brave man who would attempt based on an in telligence test to declare what the future of any individual might be the investigator might be correct 80 per cent of the
